A simple Google search will verify. Some years there are absolute clear, no questions asked, No.1 picks, but Petracca was definitely not one of those. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I don't think we can blame the saints recruiting staff for not foreseeing head trauma.
Not only head trauma. The guy was better at full-back as it turned out.

Is there any world both Smillie and Lalor are available at our picks? Seems extremely unlikely so I won't get my hopes up.

One of those two are my preferred option at 7.
Let's assume Richmond gets North's pick 2.

They could choose FOS and Jagga.

Would Carlton choose Lalor or Smilie, with Cripps set to play for ages? They might as easily choose Smith or even Draper.

If that happens, do we offer 8 and f1 to the Crows for the next pick? Get Lalor then if Dees go for Langford and North choose Tauru, Smilie is up for grabs.

Im not projecting he will be a star, but he was playing through a back injury which eventually cost him games. Lets see what he looks like injury free and with a full preseason.

Hotton is the other if he gets another year. He came to the club with a back injury and really only got going in the second half of this year
Any chance Carton will do something weird like choose him with their 3 because of his old man? I'd happy to send Olli there as a DFA to keep the family together and sweeten the pot

1. Lalor
2. FOS
3. Draper
4. ?

Adelaide are the ones we have no idea about, Jagga probably likely atm

Ideally I'd like to get Smillie/Langford/slider mid at 7, then split 8 in to 2 picks in the teens to grab 2 of Hannaford/Hynes/Hotton/Berry.
If SOS can work some magic to get Dodson around 20ish then we'll be balling
Hannaford is X factor, but we got Owens=similar?
Lindsay, Hotton & Dodson would be good.
With having Pou & Windy, then maybe Garcia & Owens as grunt mids already, I'm into the class of Lindsay, Hotton, added to Wilson. Think that could be an awesome hybrid midfield going forward.

Nope. Petracca was one of the most clear no. 1 consensus picks over the past 20 years. Not Harley Reid but nothing like this year. And yes we can blame the saints recruiting team. it was their responsibility and they got it horribly wrong

At the time, the Saints were sortve desperate for a forward to replace Reiwoldt. They were very concerned about how much a forward would cost.

They blinked.

A bit like what David King said we need to find that midfielder that will stand up and put the side on his back in the critical moments.

I’m not sure which mid that would be in this draft.. maybe Langford?
Pretty well all of the top 6 mids. Lalor, FOS, Draper, Jagga, Langford & Smillie all seem like they could have those traits. Lalor seems like the one that could be that LDU type in the future.

David king was implying we’ve shat the bed at the draft for the last 20 years. I think we’ve done better than ok in the last 3yrs + I look forward to Max King making Cornes, Barret and co look silly in 2025.

They are the types to stick to their opinion regardless of whether the facts are on their side. Joe Daniher made Cornes look a bit silly. Chris Fagan the same with David King.

Maybe but I feel like Langford is more a productive and 'consistent throughout games' performer - will get your 6+ disposals every quarter. Same for Jagga

Imo all of the top mids can do it in their own ways, but if you're looking for the 'game-changing moments' players; Lalor, FOS, Smillie are the main 3

Lalor and Smillie with their size and strength could do it like Trac and Cripps

FOS more like a Warner or Dangerfield

Further down the order is obviously Hotton who has max x-factor. Allan and Hynes also very explosive. Hannaford if he can move into the mids eventually also has x-factor

Respectfully disagree BarkerFan.

Time changes many things but it doesn't change facts.

2014 coincided with the near end of the Riewoldt era with no obvious heir apparent.

Prior to the draft in the 2014 trade period, Tom Boyd the recent No. 1 draft pick was traded to the Bulldogs on a 7 year $7 million contract.

Cal Twomey predicted a draft order of McCartin, Brayshaw and then Petracca.

Clearly Trac has turned out the best of the lot and as much as I wish you could, you can't blame the saints recruiting team at the time for this stuff up.

Here's to positive vibes that the recent drafting trend continues and we smash this upcoming draft.

Go saints

Hall was playing in a completely new system AND was played out of position, of course his numbers don't jump out

But if you watch the VFL games, you would've seen some really nice glimpses especially in the final game where he clearly stood out as one of the BOGs. Played like Henry where it was more damage per disposal rather than quantity

He showed a significant improvement post-injury - probably after more education and learning more about our game style

I reckon with 3-5 more rounds of the season, he would've made a debut

He's 22. Had 2 years wiped out by knees when he was 16 and 17 AND was in the COVID cohort so had zero continuity. Once he started playing again, Dalrymple said he was one of the biggest 2023 off-season improvers in the state leagues, hence his good form at the start of the year

This has late-bloomer written all over it if I've ever seen one.

Yep looks like an early stage Sincs , especially up forward.

Joffaboy Dard Ball Get I can't remember what last year's draft/trade threads favourite words were, but first contender for this year has got to be sortve.
