When the coach has bemoaned the lack of elite mids all year, when we as a club have dragged our arses for a decade because our mids weren't good enough, when the whole justification of losing Battle for pick 8 was to get an elite mid to go with the elite mid we get at pick 7. The idea that we would use 8 on Tauru or Armstrong boggles my mind the same with trading out of 8.

Nas is heading towards being absolute elite. Max Homes is an excellent player in a good side but see Nas having a much higher ceiling.
Sorry you maybe misunderstood me.

I compared Wilson to Holmes not Naz.

Naz is on his way to being a top HB in the league.

The Q for me is, can he become a part time midfielder.
In the last few games he had some very very limited exposure. Imagine running Naz Sincs and Henry on the ball at once.

We'll be getting at least one mid, but there's a world in which we use the other on a Tauru if he's deemed best available. Still have to take the best available player.

The one I'm watching with interest is Lindsay. Wonder if some clubs see him in the top bracket of mids?

Let’s be honest, Josh Battle was drafted at pick 39 way back in 2016 and spudded it up as a forward for years. He was turned into a defender as desperation two years ago, to get pick 8 in a super draft is incredible.

We need to find the next Dustin Martin, Sam Walsh or Patty Cripps, not the next Josh Battle.

What if they're the next Tom Stewart, James Sicily or Alex Rance?

I like him too but we need players to develop into our bont/cripps/daicos/neale not into a battle. Very confident battles role is an easier role to fill
We will definitely be taking a mid with one of the picks. But depending on how we view Wilson's role long term/if we want Henry spending time in the middle/if Garcia is going to be something etc., we might also want to spread the first round talent across the ground instead of just using it just on midfielders.

FFS...

There were so many factors not least of all:

Our desperation for a KPF - We had Roo and then NOTHING. Bruce was untried as a forward & Membrey was untried, period. We had no idea what we had.

Watching the Dogs cough up the world for Tom Boyd scared the shit out of the club with the idea being that elite mids can be found with later picks in later drafts but top 5-10 KPFs don't come along very often.

Trac's Character - He was (and still is) and absolute FIGJAM specialist. There was plenty of talk that if a small club like us took him, and we stayed fairly shit, he'd be on the trade table to Collingwood inside 5 years.

We also understood that Trac was the better player. We even had a deal with GWS that was agreed to, pending the Dees compo for Frawley.

We would have traded 1 + 22 to the Giants for 3 + 6. The club wanted one of Trac, McCartin or Brayshaw at 3 and then Laverde or Wright at 6.

When the Dees got pick 3 for Frawley it meant we were gonna miss out on one of those targets and we held our pick.

There's no possible way the club could have seen Paddy's concussion issues being as bad as they became. If that didn't flare up he would have played 150+ games for us, easy.

Go watch what he was doing to teams, sometimes in a half or even a qtr, as a 19yo. He was a ****ing monster at FF.

10 years of whinging from this board later, I still don't blame them for making the pick. He had the type of aggression & leadership I wish Max King could be injected with TBH...

Leadership an added bonus. Didn't realise he was captain of the AFL Academy

Praying we get this kid:

THE ‘BORN LEADER’ LEANING ON ADVICE FROM CRIPPS
Big-bodied midfielder Josh Smillie has revealed he leant on advice from a two-time Brownlow Medal winner this year as he battled “some challenges” after entering the season as a highly-touted No. 1 draft pick contender.
Smillie met with Carlton star Patrick Cripps earlier in the year and made notes from the conversation, which he continually went back and reflected on.
A 195cm onballer, the 18-year-old has drawn comparisons to Cripps and Greater Western Sydney midfielder Tom Green, two players who he watches closely.
“I’d want to be half the player Patrick Cripps is now,” Smillie said.
“He’s the best player in the game at the moment. I really look up to those two (Cripps and Green) just because they’re big-bodied midfielders and I watch all the work that they do and try and implement it in my game.”
Smillie’s form was a little up and down at times this year, not helped by some minor injuries and illness.

He was required to spend significant time outside of the midfield during the under-18 national championships with Vic Metro, including roles in attack and defence.
“I’m very versatile so I can play any position and I grew up playing any position,” Smillie said.
“I can go forward or play across half back, but the midfield is my primarily position.
“The year’s done and you reflect on your year. You take out some negatives but you also want to look at the positives. If you said last year I’d be in the position I am now, I’d be pretty proud of this year so far.”
Smillie captained the Eastern Ranges in the Coates Talent League this year as well as serving as skipper of the AFL Academy team in two exhibition matches earlier this season.
Alongside his power and ball-winning abilities, leadership is another key trait that he prides himself on.
“I was raised from my parents being a real leader and a careful person to others,” Smillie said.
“Leadership is something I take pretty seriously. I’m a very caring person that likes to put others before me and see them succeed. It’s just something I’ve grown up with and it just comes natural.”

Fits nicely with what I mentioned a few pages back. I’m happy to be very wrong down the track but I’m absolutely chips in on the big unit and am hoping against hope he slips to us!!

Not sure I would be too happy if FOS / Lalor / Jagga / Draper / Smillie / Langford all go before our pick 7

Pick 1 Richmond - FOS / Lalor / Jagga
Pick 2 North/Richmond - FOS / Lalor / Jagga
Pick 3 Carlton - FOS / Lalor / Jagga / Draper
Pick 4 Adelaide - FOS / Lalor / Jagga / Draper
Pick 5 Melbourne - Smillie or Langford
Pick 6 - North/Richmond - Smillie or Langford

Leaves us with a possible combo of Reid / Lindsay / Travaglia / a KPP ..... and no bigger bodied pure mid available unless we reach for a Hynes / Ough / Gross / Allen

Every chance the teams before us just choose mids .... and leave the KPPs for later

Take Tauru with 7 and split 8 for Hotton and Hynes

Hotton is essentially on par with the top rung and Hynes is that 190cm big bodied burst mid we'd love to have especially since he's been overshadowed by Langford

Both these guys have massive upside so it'd be better than just settling with a Lindsay/Reid type imo

Dattoli in the second round is also an option, he could easily be the Zach Merrett of this draft given doubts over his size and athleticism. Smartest player in the pool and dual-footed with silky skills

We will take two midfielders with our first two picks. Can just about put your house on it
I reckon we’ll get 2 mids aswell. The FWD line seems settled for the future with King/Caminiti/Sharman to lead the way. And I reckon we have a key back/s already locked away for 2026 which is why we only have Howard a 1 year contract. Wouldn’t surprise me if we go for Leek Aleer and get Melican aswell. So yeh Mids it is. I’d be happy to take Smillie but I’m not sold on Reid. Would rather go with Lindsay but would taking him at 8 be overs considering some have him way lower in the rankings? That’s why I would deeply consider trying to split 8 with 2 later first rounders so that we can get Lindsay and then if we did want to get another mid then I wouldn’t feel so bad getting Reid with a later first round pick if he’s still around but I feel he could be hit or miss.

Bo Allan? 191cm midfielder that runs a sub 3 second 20 metres.
Averaged 20 touches, 4 clearances and 6 tackles in the champs plus played plenty of senior footy in the WAFL.
Also has a lot of leadership qualities.
Looks a bit like Finn Callaghan with Clint Jones kicking style (but he seems to hit the target more than Jones).

I just edited my post. His kicking style looks very similar to Clint Jones. But more accurate.
Might be a bit more explosive than Langford and Smillie.
He definitely is more explosive, but I think we need genuine contested bulls to complement Phillipou and Windy who are the explosive ones. I like to think of the types of our future mids being like this in terms of trajectory:
Pou = McCluggage,
Windy = Garcia = Neale,
? = Dunkley
Henry = Bailey

Hopefully ? = Smillie

I used to think Owens = Dunkley but he seems more like a Rayner now

That balance of inside/outside/contest-winning appears to be balanced enough to win a flag
