I don't know much about Smith's early days but Harry struggled to own a place for a long time. My point just that you may never know who will be good in that job until they're in it.
I wonder if we are moving Francis and Hamling to the rookie list so that we can pick up Ben Paton as a lockdown small defender?

No to Paton
I know these guys are effectively "free" as DLAs but they are trades, not drafts. Trade to improve. We need an age profile in our list and too many of this type of acquisition who are unlikely to play seniors doesn't help. We have Francis, Hamling and possibly a couple of others who will never play regular seniors. Do we really need more?
This is a quality draft and I'd rather have a youngster (even a late developer) who will build into a senior role, maybe like Roberts, talent, hard work and diligence rewarded.

I think sometimes we meet with players just to throw off other recruiters to our plans. If we only met with the players we truly wanted then everyone would know our plans. I think the club has to play a bit of poker to ensure that on draft night our hand is not fully exposed.

The boy from Essendon i mentioned earlier we have spoken to him . He looks a good type

On point 2, I'd be surprised if at least 3 or 4 of Rampe, Mitchell, Ladhams, Wicks, Corey aren't gone at the end of 2025.

Suspect Lloyd, Fox and Adams might be in line for the rookie treatment.
I think Lloyd is terribly underrated by this board. He is back where he started for us, on the wing. He wasn't put back because he wasn't a good winger, he was moved because we had a great need for a fast, flanker who is a good kick. Unfortunately, some idiot decided he should kick very short, like Macca did. Instead of running the ball out & kicking long. He kicks 60 metres & is a great goal lock on the run. As much as he has been quite successful at HB I think he has been a bit wasted there. His delivery forward & long goals this year have proven what a weapon he is on the wing.

Any player who wins two Bob Skilton Medals is not just a good player, he is one of your top 5 players. He was great this year alternating from wing/HB & very occasionally Mids ( I'd like to see more of him in there as he is a really good contested ball player). I think he probably has 2-3 more years in him as he is super fit. His father trained him from about 14 to be a fitness beast.

Yep, Lloyd can be added to the small-but-unfortunately-large-enough group of quality players to have been wasted by Horse.

I won't buy into that particular one but I do think we erred in building our exit strategy around Lloyd kicking in so often. Then he became locked in to our back 6/7 so I think we lost a lot of structural flexibility and with Rampe often taking the second tall we were often left undersized. I'm glad he's back on the wing.

I think you're correct but they will have their lists, preferences and options. Scratch off the ones who go earlier. They are trying to give the impression that they might do anything but I doubt that.
Especially harder for teams that have picks down the order or not ultra needs because do you go for Hynes/Davis at 19/22 or wait and grab Day-Wicks at 40. Do you go the KPF at 19/22 or 40. I can probably nail out of the 5 picks atleast 4 of the 5 roles that they will initially play but without seeing the Swans internal rankings i wouldn't be able to nail the exact draft picks even for just picks 19 and 22

Key forward has to be one of the first 2 picks, Davis I highly doubt lasts past Freo I could be wrong there but my gut feeling says that. I want Oli Hotton the most through (just unlikely to be there), and one of the picks has to be a genuine small forward

KPF and small forward with first two unless an obvious slider is there such as a Hotton, etc.

Inside mid/medium forward with the third pick and the left over one for the rookie draft.

Match Cochran with our 4th, we will be hoping no bid comes and we can rookie him
I wonder what we would do if Trainor was still available at GWS' pick 15 which has now become 18. Would Trainor be worth our first two which will be 23 & 26.

Going to say no, wouldn't be the guy to go up for. GWS won't take a defender anyway, they need mids

Would take that in a heartbeat.

Saints won't they are going for pick 2. Will keep 8, trade their f1 for pick 2, some small swaps here and there. Can see that being fairly on the mark. North get Tauru at 8

I’d take Shanahan if he fell to one of our picks, but if not, I’d wait until later in the draft for someone like Stumpf or Nicholls.

Although I can see a scenario where we don’t draft a key fwd at all, but a 190cm fwd like a Davis, Hynes, Murphy, even McKenzie or Davidson.

Just a hunch - which will probably be wrong

Think Shanahan lasts till our pick, though Richmond will be hard to know what split they do and where they take their talls. They trade at least 1-2 of these to next year. In my mock had Essendons f1 being the one they were going for and it makes sense.

If the thinking is that we might go to 2 KPFs, then I wouldn't mind seeing us picking up 2 of Hynes, Davis, McKenzie, Murphy, Day-Wicks, Sulzberger.

Maybe Davis or Hynes with the first and they play a bit in the mids too, then a McKenzie or Murphy later on as forwards.

If Davis and Hynes are gone, you might pay up for one of Murphy, McKenzie then look at Day-Wicks or Sulzberger later (plus a couple of others).

Outside of Sims, there probably isn't the contested marking KPF we need more anyway.

Remember this name Will Hoare from Essendon VFL 196 cm and led the comp in intercepts , we are big into him and sadly so are the pussies
I wonder if we would have to pick him before their 2nd pick (57), or wait until after picking/matching a bid on Joel (50 odd), before their next pick?

If we are we might take him with our third then go the smaller types at those first two picks. Could even potentially bundle our third and 4th to move slightly down. There’s options if we go that route.

No Hynes for me though
