Praying the loop hole is closed this year.
Interested in how the loophole is actually closed.

Ultimately, he's already at the Lions, so if he wants to go there and doesn't want to go Hawks, how would it work? If he doesn't nominate for father/sun, he's not allowed to nominate for his academy?

Could work in many ways really, but ultimately, having a son of a former player is really not what Academies were intended for. I think it would be reasonable to make him ineligible to be taken as part of an Academy bid.

Make F/S or F/D unable to nominate an academy.

Just like Christian Moroes can not nominate the Hawks as an academy prospect. He could play with Boxhill but we can not nominate him.

AFL makes the rules

* If a F/S turn down dad’s club that’s fine, but he / she enters the draft like anyone else.

Cooper Hodge playing in the u/16 Nationals -

Another father-son in action in the wet-weather triple-header at People First Stadium was Cooper Hodge, the son of four-time premiership Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge, who played the last two seasons of his career at the Lions.

Hodge collected 16 disposals in their loss to Tasmania, who had Tyane Thomas, brother of sacked former North Melbourne player Tarryn, in their side.

These father-sons may have a decision to make in the coming years like Nick Blakey, who chose to join the Swans despite being father-son eligible to North Melbourne.

Good month of Box Hill footy could get him on the rookie list. Great opportunity, good overage junior footy can be deceptive.
He's really come on as a player, the extra 6 or so CM he's grown don't do any harm either. All the signs of a classic late bloomer, glad he's still tied to us as a FS.

They'll make it academy kids can't be father sons ;)

What would the pathway to being drafted look like in Brisbane outside of an academy?

For a Father/Son? Same as any other kid, except you're already known to clubs. Especially when you're the son of one of a club's greatest players. An Academy spot is hardly needed.

Fist a disclaimer. I am a Hawthorn supporter but also involved in a Northern Academy. This is a massive misunderstanding by Victorian's. the Academies were never set up for non AFL playing kids. This has been mentioned a ton of times but is untrue. The Academies work as the key elite development pathways in the northern states. It is essentially the elite coaching that the Vic kids get in the Coates leagues.

So basically any kid in the Northern states who wants to follow his elite pathway needs to be in an academy or he will miss out and not be developed. Copper would not get exposure to any elite coaching if he was excluded from the Academy and would most likely not make it as a result.

Now the AFL does not fund these Academies, they don't fund any elite talet pathways in NSW and QLD. The only way to fix this is for the AFL to stick there hand in there pocket and fund an elite pathway for juniors in NSW and QLD. Until then the clubs who pay for the elite development will want some form of access as a result.

Thank you for that sensible reply, the motivations are much clearer now. As usual the barrier to the best outcome is the AFL actually properly investing in grassroots football. Stop propping up basketcases like North and STK, and reinvest that money into development pathways to ensure the remaining competition is at the highest level.
