Fixture 2024 fixture - first game away to GWS?

I'm happy with playing them once and resting Nick
This is actually a good idea. No point him playing unless he just plays in the forward pocket the whole game.

That hack Macginnes only plays every 2nd week when there is someone worth tagging, it'd do more harm then good to nick

So far we know:
Round zero - official name TBD - v GWS
Round 1 v Swans
Round 2 v St kilda
Round 3 v Lions
Round 4 v Hawks
Bye?
Round 6 --
Round 7 v Essendon
I get the feeling that round 6 or 8 could be used as one of our Marvel home games. Potentially against Gold Coast, Fremantle or west coast?

This competition is becoming more and more about money, TV rating and maximising crowds, we are at risk of being bigger than the AFL and paying big time for it!!!!

Be thankful for it. If prime time games were divided evenly across the comp we would get a lot less of them.

The incessant whining about our draw is a joke. Every year we get Anzac Day, KB, Easter Thursday plus a tonne of Friday night slots. Ours is the best draw every year.

I agree. I couldn't care less when we play. And as you say, we are in nearly every blockbuster game.

I believe it'll be against Sydney round one, probably on a Thursday or Friday night.
friday.

"However, the likely round one fixture will see Carlton play Richmond on Thursday night, Collingwood play Sydney on Friday night with Melbourne to play the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night meaning Essendon would play Hawthorn on Sunday the MCG"

"The Western Bulldogs expect to land a couple of home games at Marvel Stadium against big drawing Victorian clubs Collingwood, Carlton or Essendon, with Carlton now playing in the Good Friday clash against North Melbourne."

I’d like Thursday night games TBH. As long as the Friday night games are good and maybe Sun late I don’t care who the teams are. I’ll watch the Pies whenever they play. Have sympathy for AFL and broadcasters, as a neutral in big timeslots if not Pies just want a good game to watch

GWS on Sat night.

Thank god for that, I had a travel credit that was set to expire yesterday so I had to book flights just on the expectation it was Saturday!

Pardon me for being so negative but this is an absolute joke, I'm filthy on this, any Premier in Vic or not should have round 1 at home. AFL trying to outdo the NRL in their own territory, Giants might actually sell out this local footy stadium when we go up there. Complete stitch up

I tend to agree. The AFL's incessant undermining of the NRL in its heartland is both shortsighted and arrogant. What's more, it's insulting to and out of touch with the majority of its core supporter base in the heartland AFL states.

I would also prefer not to be playing Sydney in round 1 (2) at the MCG on a Friday night - a traditional rival such as Melbourne would be better or, if the AFL was actually serious about fixture equalisation and exposure for all teams, North would be ideal as it would give their supporters the chance to attend a Friday night game for once instead of being shunted to a 4.40pm Sunday slot and a greater opportunity for more Pies fans to attend.

Let's not get carried away, it's pretty normal for the premiers to be elsewhere.

From 2000 onwards the reigning premier in round 1 has got 9 home games, 7 games in their home state but either away or not at their home ground and 7 games outside their home state.

Half or more of the 9 home games were ones that were standard fixtures anyway i.e. Richmond playing against Carlton and Hawthorn on Easter Monday.

We'll get our big moment in the proper Round 1 and it looks like we'll get a chance to do something no one else has done before - fill the MCG against an interstate club.

I don’t hate opening round like everyone else. It’s an extra week of footy for the masses without adding unnecessary games. My only real qualm is why the four preliminary finalists have to start back one week sooner than clubs that finished their 4-5 weeks earlier.

At least we're playing GWS who are coming off a similar break to us.

I also think a bye in Round 5 or 6 will be more beneficial to our older players than a week's extra preseason. Hopefully we'll be able to hit the ground running with extra intensity for some crucial early games against GWS, Brisbane & Sydney before getting a week's break.

Not sure there's a sporting organisation in the world that cuts off its own nose to spite its face like the AFL lol

"Hey we have this incredible tool at our disposal to really maximise crowds - thereby ticket sales, maximise ratings - thereby ad revenue, merchandise sales and general interest in our sport, why don't we piss that all away in favour of growing the game in a city we haven't managed to do that in in over 50 years!?"

You have Collingwood post a premiership and breaking crowd and membership numbers.

A smart organisation would use that to their advantage.

The counter from the AFL would be that over the long term they're growing the game and using sides like Collingwood to do it.

The AFL's approach is predicated on the fact that it has a rusted-on core of supporters. It knows that as the gatekeeper or controller of the product, their core is unlikely to desert them, regardless of the decisions it makes. Knowing this, the AFL treats its supporters with utter contempt in the most patronising and arrogant manner possible.

Can't see how this is a bad thing. The opening round will provide a much bigger spectacle than us trudging up to Sydney in the middle of the season. As a competition, we are committed to growing the game in Sydney, and this measure will undoubtedly help with that.

Our first home game will still get a massive turnout.

It's a marketing strategy. They want tickets in high demand with an early sellout to help build hype.

Hi guys, while I don’t mind this and look forward to the game it seems that a pies/giants game would attract a good crowd any round next year. Putting such attractive games on to open the season seems a waste when a Footy starved public would rock up to any game at all first round. Or am I reading this wrong?

They simply want Qld & NSW afl teams to play crowd pulling teams for the opening round whilst rugby play theirs overseas.
