True - but have we really HIT the draft?

1 top 5 pick.
We took 9 picks inside the top 30 over 4 drafts, which was the strategy.

Newcombe, Ramsden, Blanck and Tucker on top of that.

Of all the trade whispers I have heard over all the years of being a member here, this is the one I am most confident of.
By far, over any others.
Only Geelong blowing us out of the water with an untouchable offer is the only way it won't happen. Cats won't do it because it goes against what there about. There about at the maximum offer right now and he's said no.

If we don't get Taylor, McCluggage, English with the amount of cash we have I'll start to think external players think our club has problems.
How many of the truly truly elite players on the market leave to go to a bottom 4 club, especially when most of those players are paying in contenders. It is not a sign our club has issues.

Players don't leave for money as often as you'd believe.

Why Taylor, Suitcase or English would leave top 8 sides for a bottom 4 side is a better question. 2 of those coming from interstate as well.

I count 7?

Maybe because 2016-2019 we had 1 pick in the top 30 and 2020 was a balls up we need to do it for a bit longer?

It also depends on the depth of the draft year.
Like I keep saying the strategy is the strategy.
It’s aligned between the Footy dept and the HFC board and has been for some time.

I get people don’t like losing or worry that being shit on the weekend means that we’ll never improve, but the talent in the list is still the same, the strategy doesn’t change after a few losses.

Can save you the trouble, we won't be getting any of them

Taylor is playing for a premiership contender.

McLuggage isn’t going anywhere. Already agreed to an unannounced deal according to most mail around the place.

English is likely only going home to WA if anywhere.

We don’t need conspiracies on why they won’t come to Hawthorn, when the reality of each players situation tells the story.

I'm interested in the Josh Battle interest, I've followed him since he was quite young, would be a good fit. He was a huge Hawks fan growing up so hopefully he 'wants to come home'.

There is no player that is potentially available that is worth trading out a top 5 pick, Bailey Smith coming off an acl a future 1st should get it done.

An offseason of Battle, Smith & a top 5 pick would be a big injection of quality.

It is valid to suggest that after a certain period of time, you need to pivot away from a strategy that isn't working. But you also can't throw out the years of planning and structuring around a meticulous strategy after a few bad weeks. Hell, even after a few bad months. You need to find a balance between kneejerk reactions and giving pieces time to gel, while also not leaving yourself behind the pack because you've committed to a sinking ship. In hindsight, it's easy to say Clarkson was a fool for trying the rebuild on the fly. But after a top 4 finish in 2018, you might've thought it was actually a masterplan.

It's quite a difficult tightrope to walk – and moving to a draft-heavy strategy is no guarantee of working either. I know we love to be armchair experts but I certainly don't envy list managers, that's for sure. Tough ****ing gig.

English's girlfriend plays netball in Victoria for the vixens and his brother has also made the move to Victoria.

Go home factor may not be as strong

I reckon it's cos Sam and the rest are placing a greater emphasis on personality characteristics in recruiting "good blokes" with great leadership skills, above average intelligence and dashing good loks. And Hawthorn fans have a greater disposition toward all the above. Makes perfect sense to me.

**** me am i the only odd one out

* me am i the only odd one out
Well if there were two of you, then you would not be the odd one out, would you.

Sorry. let me re-phrase that:

Well,
IF there were two of you
THEN
you would not be the odd one out, would you.

I keep thinking of Carlton during a period who could never attract a free agent or complete a decent trade and then almost overnight, Cerra, Saad, McGovern, Williams, Acres, Kennedy, Hewett all nominated the Blues via trades or free agency during what felt like a 3 year block. Having Curnow Mckay Weitering and Cripps already in place no doubt helped with luring these other pieces .

Last year Chol and Ginni chose us. It is a start for what hopefully will be an exciting time for us.

Carlton did have to pay a premium for some of those players (Cerra, Saad cost them first rounders) but they already had a talented established core due to years of sucking. Most importantly they nailed their spine in Weitering, McKay and Curnow all in the same bloody draft.

We're going to have the opposite problem where we lack those key position players, who are both the hardest to land and in the most demand. Not sure where we get them from without overpaying. It's why missing on McKay was a blow (even though I don't rate him that highly).

It won’t, because the amount of talent that we identified we already had on the list has not changed.

As Nelk points out above, we have a couple of holes to fill, and we all know what they are. Key forward, Key Defender and some more pace through the middle.

SYL I listened to the podcast interview with Rob McCartney on Hawk insider that you posted in the Sam Mitchell thread and said people should listen to on how the rebuild is going to go.

Rob at the start admitted after the pre season games that what they saw is not what they expected to see in performance without paraphrasing, it has continued so do we need more talented kids on the list.
He did say that we have a quite a few holes that need to be filed.

He also said that they expected to have a slow start again and win more games in the second half pretty much the same as last year, but try to push for more wins and without the big blowouts in the first half of the season which I agree haven’t been massive margins at the end of the games but have been at half time.

Which really hasn’t happened the way we are playing and they expect more than 7 wins this year.

So if this continues the way it’s going at the moment maybe we need to pivot slightly.

I also listen to What makes Brad angry and he was pretty spot on with his assessment.

like Kingy says, there's no alternative to pace. speed solves everything. We got none of it in the midfield, time to pay up and get some!
Weddle, B. MacDonald, S.Mitchell & CJ could be used further up the ground.

Bailey Smith is coming of an acl and has off field issues. He does provide speed but just bombs the ball inside 50.

Daniel Hoyne on Baz’s kicking last year.
“Some of these midfielders and some of these half-back flankers for the Dogs and their poor ball use going inside 50... their ability to hit a target inside 50, Bailey Smith is kicking 14 per cent below expectation, anytime that you’re five per cent or worse is alarm bells,”

Big risk to give up a potential top 5 pick.
