Agree I think we’ve done well above average with our players in and haven’t really lost anyone of note. When they said we were hitting it hard I took that to mean getting in 1-2 more top end picks than we ended up with. My kingdom for pick purchasing!Well you measure sucess in how well you jump the queue.
If you take your given draft hand every year, you get a top end player or two and hopeully rise up.
Success is how you can outpace the clubs that are doing that. The current methods:
1. Pick better players at your pick than others can do.
2. Free agents - buying them or losing them to get TOP compo picks
3. Trading players out high and in low
4. Academy players
5. Father son
6. Midseason draft.
I don't want to reinterrogate the late Clarko period but he pretty much did the opposite of all of these and had no control of father son. (Although he did get some good cheap pickups like Hendo and Scully was good for a 4th rounder).
But in the Sam era we are:
1. Drafting well by the look of it. Not too many players drafted later are doing better than the ones we've picked.
2. Amon in (tick!)
3. I think we got Ginni and Chol pretty cheap tbh. Kosi and Ryan out relatively high. O'Meara and Mitchell out was gutsy as hell. Didn't yield huge draft capital but was good.
4. Don't think we've brought any in academy players?
5. Finn, Dear and McCabe. Three on the list now. If one of these guys skyrockets it's an absolute game changer
6. Newcombe. A+
So there area things coming together.
The only trick we've missed at this point is being able to trade people out for high end trade capital. But we've at least been active in trying to make that happen. You can see what a difference it would make to bring in a free agent or trade a genuine (not potential) A grader.

Does anyone think Jack McCrae on a half back flank or wing isn’t worth it? Not sure if out of contract or not but is only 29 and plenty of good footy in him from my point of view. If a trade should be cheap
Burgoyne came to us maybe 1 year younger. Depending who else is coming to us as well I think he is a good move. Players like him will make our younger players better as wellTrying to think logically at 29 you would be happy to get what - 40-60 games out of him? We really don’t have genuine wingers besides Amon so it could be a potential great stopgap, but also will take games away from probably one of our high rated mids.
If we think we can challenge within the next 50 odd games then yes but otherwise I’m not sure exactly what purpose it serves us long term.
Isn’t quick enough to play a wing or half back role for us.Does anyone think Jack McCrae on a half back flank or wing isn’t worth it? Not sure if out of contract or not but is only 29 and plenty of good footy in him from my point of view. If a trade should be cheap
So she started when he was in their academy? In their defence, his mother has worked there a couple years before he was drafted
Edit take #3: Not all heroes wear capesSo she started when he was in their academy?
Since Nick Reiwoldt in 2000, the only genuine KPFs who have gone at #1 were J. Patton and T. Boyd. Hardly great long term investments were they? It’s will be interesting if we finish bottom 3 and there is a KPF that has risen up the ranks in his final year that could go number 1 if we will what ever we can to get that first pick seeing how badly we need a KPF
Come on Bugs, you're better than that. Not all hero's wear capes
Edited just for youCome on Bugs, you're better than that.
Hey fellas, just wanted an opinion from Hawks supporters if there was interest in Tom Barrass (3 years left on contract after this year) if he was open to a move with the first two years of his salary $800k/year paid for by us. If so, what draft pick(s) would you see as a fair trade assuming ladder positions remain as they are?
Feel sorry for DGB with his injury this year, but hearing he’s also not the best trainer? Yeah thought he’d be a bit out of the ideal age bracket with your list’s age profile. I’d say you’ll be fighting tooth and nail to get Sam Taylor out of GWS next year just like us.Straight swap for DGB? Only half joking.
As good as Barrass is there is no way we would trade a top three/four pick for him. He'd be 29 by next season and doesn't fit the age demographic.
Cap space relief not really attractive for us. If anything we’d want a salary dump type deal. Think your proposed deal would be attractive to a contending team.Hey fellas, just wanted an opinion from Hawks supporters if there was interest in Tom Barrass (3 years left on contract after this year) if he was open to a move with the first two years of his salary $800k/year paid for by us. You guys were mad not to take the 2 x first rounders from the swans last year. That said they have their pick and one of north end of first round begging picks so take that and run.Hey fellas, just wanted an opinion from Hawks supporters if there was interest in Tom Barrass (3 years left on contract after this year) if he was open to a move with the first two years of his salary $800k/year paid for by us. Not sure TB was keen on Sydney. I’d be pretty pissed off if it was the club that said no but I’m pretty sure it never got past TB and his management. I reckon the shinbeggars will be back at it again this year despite already being given 2 1Rs. Also expect some stupid band 1 rubbish for Zuurhar to affect your 1R after they finish last or second last. I’d absolutely take 2 1R for him this year if it’s on the table but I don’t run the club. You guys were mad not to take the 2 x first rounders from the swans last year. Maybe you should. As good as Harley Reid is you have so little young talent you needed to trade pick 1 for the bounty on draft night that would have been offered by north. They didn’t need lots more kids they needed relevance and clearly watching WA media he would have given them that. You needed many top 30 picks would have been a win win.Not sure TB was keen on Sydney. They’ve been given 3 first rounders and 1 second rounder (which is essentially like an end of first). Plus the McKay compo which was a joke. Not sure TB was keen on Sydney. Exactly. The AFL cooked the books on the McKay compo and told Essendon how much they had to raise it by to ensure it got band 1. They also got a 3R that was essentially an end of 2R. Meanwhile clubs like Hawks and Eagles who are genuinely rebuilding and having our time at the bottom of the cycle after some earned success get shafted. We finished last in 2023 and our second pick was pick 30. It’s a joke. Last chance to go to Tassie or kick the Shinbeggars out, 18 clubs spreads talent too thinly as it is.They’ve been given 3 first rounders and 1 second rounder (which is essentially like an end of first).
