They’ve been given 3 first rounders and 1 second rounder (which is essentially like an end of first). Plus the McKay compo which was a joke.
They'll get a 1st for Zurhar compo. as well as this year's complement of charity, regardless the contract he's offered & the band it SHOULD trigger

Wonder if we are lurking around baggage claim for Luggage.

I know it's not as simply as this, but if it was who are you taking out of Smith or Luggage?
Mexican Girl etc.

Luggage is FA - shouldn't impact acquiring Smith (2025 1st). Could acquire both, keep our 2024 1st & still afford Sam Taylor via RFA in 2025.

Would be mad not to chase both.

Hey fellas, just wanted an opinion from Hawks supporters if there was interest in Tom Barrass (3 years left on contract after this year) if he was open to a move with the first two years of his salary $800k/year paid for by us. If so, what draft pick(s) would you see as a fair trade assuming ladder positions remain as they are?
Love Barrass, but hurt his back/neck in that spoil last year, have heard his back is not in good shape and actually will shorten his career. Was told by someone involved at West Coast that it was close to being career over that day.

Long story short he had some spinal fractures which were and are stable. It wasn’t career threatening on the day and there was never any neck involvement so I’m not sure who’s given you that mail. He did a media interview in which he was very clever about what he said in case he has back pain as he gets older if you catch my drift. He’s a fantastic player and I wouldn’t begrudge him if he wanted a shot at another flag or chased a bigger pay day elsewhere especially after seeing what McSpud got at Essendon provided we were compensated fairly. His presser a day or two ago talking about Harley was fairly entertaining.

Landing Clug would be incredible, he'd fit in beautifully. Plus FA.

But there is no way he leaves Brisbane. And if he does, he's not coming to us, not at this stage.

We can't afford Taylor this year either, but I'd be throwing cant-say-no money at him next year.

Options aplenty but more patience might be needed than initially thought.

Keep 1st rounder, land Smith and another bargain like mass/ginni, that's a strong off season as it is. Load up again next year but go even bigger.

Cats, pies and crows are going to be extremely active in the midfield market this and next year. We're going to have our work cut out if we wanna be luring any sort of high end talent in the off season.
I see posters here think that the dogs are going to be ok with our future first for baismith, no, they won't. The fact that the cats and the pies are lurking means they have the upper hand. But, if smith makes it known that he wants only Hawthorn then and only then do we have something to present the dogs outside of our 2024 pick. Future first + player or second rounder to compensate their loss of a talented player.
Not sure about the crows but both cats and the pies are serious threats in us acquiring high end talent. We MUST keep our first this year though , too much midfield talent on display or as an option there are a couple of kp potentials that may spring up to top 5-6 calculations towards the end of the season!

The Dogs do not have the upper hand in anything with Smith if he requests a trade.

It does not matter if 16 other clubs are keen on him, once he requests a trade to a club they are all irrelevant. Also our future first is enough for Smith. We do not need to be adding to it especially not another second.

Only an outsider looking in and despite recruiting Ginnivan I still can’t understand why you took Watson over Sanders and Curtin and especially knocked back our F1 which was always going to be pick 1 or 2? Were BF Hawks happy with that?
Because Watson’s the better player

Clug is a restricted free agent so they would match and force a trade even if he requested out.

Hell of a player though
At some point a club that offers a big contract should walk away if the other club matches. Let them screw up their salary cap. It'll make the process become more mature.

This happens all the time in the NFL. And both clubs and players accept that it may happen and are professional in how they react to it.

I don't get how posters still fail to understand that the Dogs and Dees who courted us for our pick were doing so to get access to the Wiz.

The Dogs wouldn't have been able to read his name out fast enough if we had gone Sanders/Curtin.

Opposition posters, you’re free to engage in this thread respectfully, but if you want to do a deep dive on trade/draft periods historically then your going to be asked to move on.

I think with top 5 picks you don't fluff around.

You go for best available and that was the Wiz.

Speed, creativity, pressure and goals in the forward half is something we desperately needed as much as a KPP option. Breust isn't going to be around for much longer.

FWIW I was hoping for one of Wiz, Duursma or Curtin so I'm pleased with our selection.
Yep fair call with Breust, if you can get some quality 26yo KPPs through free agency that would probably fit your list age better with a fantastic young midfield. Even though you’re a couple of years ahead of us with your rebuild I look forward to seeing how the kids turn out without being propped up by the AFL for years like some other clubs…

If the rules change sure maybe, under the current rules the Lions aren’t going to take a pick 13-18 for a player of his calibre

No need to change the rules at the moment. As soon as we put up an offer and the other club matches, then they are on the hook. You can't change the structure of that payment in regards to impact on salary cap.

Players have to realise that this could be an outcome and that the other club doesn't have to trade. They still get their $$$$.

we have to be having a crack at Caleb Daniel clearly on the outer and is an absolute gun
