Bro let's be realistic, Sturt is 190 cm and not a small forward. He might not even be on our list at the end of this season.

Delean has literally just been drafted so we don't even know what his ceiling is yet.

What if Walter's gets injured this season?
Since when was it a requirement to have forwards under 180cm?

Tbh if Schultz had stayed I would've thought our forward line was small and tall if that makes sense. Basically what I'm saying is all players were either talls or sub-180cm. Frederick was the only exception except he's more a HFF.

We'll benefit as a side imo if we bring in medium forward/s to replace Walters. If Sturt improves enough to be that player it's actually the most ideal scenario imo.

This ^ we were too small at the end of last year with Schultz, Walters, Switta and Frederick all playing in the forward line.
When Jackson went into the ruck full time we tried to play Corbett and Banfield as the 3rd tall and it wasn’t working (despite the better performance in the last 5 games).
Sturt was good as a medium forward but IMO we need to replace Schultz with another medium, not another small.
If/when Walters finally pulls the pin, we’ll still have Switta, Frederick, Simpson and Delean competing for 2 small spots. You could almost throw JOM into that mix at 184cm

I re-watched the Geelong game last night, I cannot believe we won that game with the team we had out there. A truly remarkable win.

There's a fair chance that Kosi is part of that dumpster fire.

(not named in the texts, just loves the Melbourne lifestyle, like Henry)
I thought the speculation during the year he re-signed was that he loved the club, but didn't love living in the city of Melbourne so much?

While you should have a good balance, small forwards are called small for a reason. They use their height to an advantage along with their other physical attributes. I can't remember the last time a side made it to a GF without an elite small forward. They are necessary and play a role. Currently our small forward hopes rest on a two game player in Emmett and a draftee taken with pick 60 which is just poor list management.

Simpson will start as a small forward as well.

Sonny plays above his height

Sturt plays below his

They are the most like for like on our list

What texts?
The Smith texts that implicate others.

Just more that I have no idea who is implicated, so not suggesting Kosi is. But there's an even chance that he wouldn't pass the haircut test right now.

Probably a one in ten chance that Delean is as good as Sonny.
We need to draft a small forward in the first round to have a better chance of getting a decent player. A weightman/Pickett type in the pick 12-13 range (where they were picked) would be ideal.
One in ten?!!!
Geez you are optimistic.
I'm closer to one in ten thousand chance he is as good as Sonny

That is my understanding too. As well. Also.
I don't think there is a person in this thread who wouldn't take on Kosi despite knowing the risks. We have an ultra elite professional club with very high standards and good support from all levels. He wouldn't be another Hogan.

To win the flag you need to have at least one small forward that’s close to AA level.
Yes we got lucky in 2008 drafting Sonny with a throw at the stumps junk pick. I’d like to see a list of every pick 53 since then - I’d be fairly confident most of them are/were fringe spuds that never made it?

We are trying to get away on the cheap with smalls. Skimping and hoping we hit gold with a nothing pick. I’d even settle for spending one top 25 pick on a specialist small forward. Simpson is a midfielder.

It’s matchwinners we are short of. Good small forward are matchwinners. Our competition will be the likes of GWS and Adelaide in the coming years and we saw last year - Rankine and Rachele tearing us a new arseh*le at the Adelaide oval. GWS went out and spent pick 12 this year on phoenix gothard, with Daniels and Bedford (another underrated player) already in the sheds.
Bobby hill and Elliott for the pies.
Lions with Cameron, an absolute gun plus goal sneaks like Bailey.
Yeah walters is in that bracket but he’s nearly done. We are trying to compete with the players named above by getting speculative 4th rounders like Delean or train ons like max Beattie. The odds are it won’t be enough. That’s my point.

It’s not enough. It’s the biggest hole in our list by a mile. Overall I really like the list we have build and the guys we are bringing in.

But now we are looking at another potential elite tall in McDonald, who will force Treacy (a good promising player) to another club. I can guarantee you now he’s not sitting about here to play for peel in 2025 while Logan takes his place. They can’t all play in the same team.

Meanwhile in the small forward brigade the cupboard is bare.
Here a question - do you prefer spend two first round picks next October on Kosi Pickett or Logan Mcdonald?
For me it’s Pickett. He would light up our forward line at ground level under the tripe J combo.

Careful, people will think we are the same person 😉 We pretty much have the exact same opinion. We all get excited by the new toys we have and forget that our forwardline means f all without an elite small forward to tie it all together. How we have ignored this area of the list for years is bs.

I agree. We need a very dangerous small to complete the team. Shultz was decent but not at that A grade level. And now we don't even have him. Someone like a Charlie Cameron or Eddie Betts type that freaks oppo defences out. We need that string to win a flag. Thankfully we have like a million first rounders to make it happen next year. If we blow that on another tall that might be 10-20% better than one of our current talls, I'll murder the whole club.

If Geelong bomb this year and go into full rebuild then I reckon Tyson Stengle is the small forward we should be chasing.
Has the talent and at 25/26 has plenty of years still to play.
Not young enough to be around for their next tilt at a flag but still with good currency so they may consider a trade.

Not a bad shout.

He is still high risk I think.

Only one good year, multiple off field issues

Stengle fits the bill as others have said but he is high risk off the field. He is a guy who needs a decent year in 2024 actually on a personally level for the cats or he will start looking like a flash in the pan.
