He’s barely missed a game for years and is one of the fittest/hardest trainers out of any club. There is zero reason to think he couldn’t play almost every game for the next 4-5 years. Sports science is miles better these days too and we have one of the best in Burgess. There isn’t some sudden fall off a cliff after 30 these days for a lot of players, especially the ones that are super professional like ANB.

Unless he gets a freak injury, I think he’s a very strong chance of playing 100+ games at the club.
My hope would be that he plays 3 years at his current level (I think that’s realistic), then 2 years with a lesser output/role

With his fitness levels and training standards, I think that’s both realistic, and would be a win given what we gave up

His biggest asset will be allowing Rankine to do what Petracca did and become an 80:20 mid/forward, that cannot be understated. It would 100% be one of the major reasons we pursued him.

You talking about Sam Gibson?

Pretty clear that some recruiters ie. Richmond rate the draft as ‘super’ whereas others don’t ie. us.

It also depends on where your list is at. Freo, for example, prepared to give up two good picks for Bolton as he will have immediate impact rather than two draftees who are a couple of years away from being solid contributors.

I would have liked for us to move on a couple more guys and taken a couple more draftees. Or at least another one. We look like having at least two retirements next year and some easy delists.
The only way we could've taken more players in the draft is by not taking ANB and peatling. Those acquisitions took list spots and more importantly the draft picks.
If we still took those guys we could have freed up spots by delisting or paying out a couple of players, which may have caused salary cap issues but also wouldve meant we were using picks 80+ in the draft to replace them
It's pretty clear that we made an assessment on what we could get for players we were willing to lose in delisting or trade vs what we could get in the draft and decided we preferred trading in players and keeping pick 4. Personally think it was the right choice although i would have liked us to have 1 more list spot free so we could trade future picks back into this round to get dodson or another mid. But rumours that we are into NWM and/or draper next year may mean we need those picks

You don’t draft a player hoping he’d only play 800-100 games though, you’re hoping you draft well and find a 200 game plus player
I do.
I hope every player* plays between 100 and 800 games.
*good ones

Wow, your glass is less than half empty!! All the pundits have given our list management either a B or A for this year's trade period.
If you'd watched GWS' finals games you would know that Peatling is a very good trade. We need mature leaders who will actually play well consistently(unlike Laird, Smith, Murphy - tell me when to stop!) & ANB is obviously a born leader if you watch his interviews. We need more speed around the ground - Peatling & Cumming have real speed & ANB will run an opponent into the ground with his stamina - think Duracell bunny. Plus, all three have finals experience.
I have been critical of the footy department, but they know a bit about the game in fairness - but yes, we can do better.

Like I said, they will help ASAP but long turn I feel they won’t. Cummings is injured a lot, how many games will he play in a year?? Maybe 10 and then get injured again.
In a great draft we almost opt out. Just feel we are only picking up average players, they may become better. Hope Peatling becomes a good midfielder and Cummings stays fit.
Also we are going into another season with Rob and Strauny, so disappointing. Feel we resigned to many duds who haven’t performed , don’t forget we finished 15th.

Those ratings are stupid btw, Richmond got an A i think? They for a lot of draft pick but they almost are guaranteed a wooden spoon. Not one good player left there under 29

Exchanging role players to refresh the list should just be a normal trade period, that doesn't get an A, perhaps because crows fans are so used to reid doing nothing they give it an A 😃

To get an A you need to show a big picture direction imo, so for example Richmond have just shown their intent to rebuilt better in one trade period that we did for the last 5 or if you're in the window like Geelong they've added again with bailey smith in an attempt to try to extend their window

Our big picture direcion was lacking as we finished 15th and yet go into a strong draft with with 1 pick
I actually do think this trade period showed big picture direction.

We’ve added three immediate best 22 players in the prime of their careers. This will complement when the Thilthorpe, Soligo, Rachele group hits their prime and will give us a good age range of 20-30 year olds which is important.

We’ve also kept our 4th pick which should land us an A grade player.

I do think we probably should have held onto pick 25 and made the ANB trade work a different way so I wouldn’t give us an A, but otherwise this is a very successful trade period.

I like him, and he can actually jump off the ground.
I would really like a footy smart ruckman again who holds most of their marks & taps to real advantage.

It's been a while...

To me those players are supporting acts, a big picture would have been if we're rebuilding trading a player for another pick in a strong draft or if we're contending then trading pick 4 for a player to complement our existing A graders (do we even have one?😃). But I get your point this trade period was a marked difference from others in adding that supporting act

Who would be the player you suggest to trade for a top 20ish pick?

I was in the camp that trading Berry might have been a good option to get some draft capital but he would have been pick 30-40 at best.

I get that these players aren’t A graders, but they are significant upgrades on what we have and are proven performers at AFL level. I also think Peatling has a higher ceiling than we might think.

i would have taken that for berry tbh
he would need to improve his disposal massively next year to be best 23 IMO

Trade Berry for a pick in the 30-40s, give that for ANB or package it with 45 and later picks and trade up with one of the clubs that needed points to move up a bit.

The Swans delisted one of their young rucks, the 209cm McAndrew.

Worth a shot as one of our SANFL listed players? I haven't seen him play but picking up a ruck for our SANFL side might be a way to find one cheaply.

I have to wonder about these Draper rumours… and I only say this because I have a little theory…

My source leading up to the trade week, whilst handing out information like candy, made one comment that I corrected them on. We were talking about the draft and they said “you ever heard of a kid called Sam Draper”? To which I replied “you mean Sid?” They looked a little embarrassed and agreed. I’m wondering if said source had been saying as much to others over the previous week and people got confused and added 1+1 and got 3?
