Has Butts ever played ruck? Considering we are becoming abit flush for kpd id like to see it… just read his draft profile:

DRAFT ANALYSIS: "Jordon Butts is the baby of the 2017 draft crop. He is a great mark, versatile and can run all day"

STRENGTHS: Marking, versatility, accumulation, spread, scope

In 2018, Butts extended his capabilities to not only being able to play up either end, but on a wing as well. He played a mixture of key position forward, key position back and through the midfield to become a "Mr Fix It" for clubs keen to mould the big man into the player they are looking for. He could still improve his strength, and his defensive pressure, but his ability to spread, take a truckload of marks and then just find the ball is very admirable for a player of his size.

Good to see we have coached most of that out of him..versatile?, accumulation👎, spread🤣.

But who knows, could he be tried there and succeed in spite of us

Hamill let Bobby Hill do what he always does.

Bobby Hill averages 10.6 disposals, 3 marks, 1.2 goals and 1 goal assist in 2024.

Against us Bobby Hill had 9 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal and 1 goal assist.

So a bog average player that we delisted last year, kept the Norm Smith Medallist to a below average game.

Ergo, Hamill played well against Collingwood.

a few things must change for us to stop becoming the st Kilda of the AFL.

We need in the short term to better utilize the talents we have at our disposal. We need to play players who are performing well in the ressies each week eg Strauchnie and Dowling. This week would be an ideal time to give ROB a rest and play strauchnie who has been in our best for the last 3-4 weeks. Dowling should come in for Crouch who is injured. We should be playing Hammil across half back instead of Smith as Hammil was actually in good form against Collingwood. Curtin and Ryan are improving but they are being well educated by Madgen on the field in the ressies and are both learning to defend and getting in the right positions on the field. Madgens voice at Richmond on Saturday was constant, positive and at times challenging for the young boys in the back half. if Hammil fails and i think he probably will, the new boys will be ready to go and their stay in the team will be sustainable and longer term - not in one week and out the other.

In relation to this we need to try players in their final year of contract or those that are not consistently playing well in their present positions in new roles to see whether they can cut the mustard there. If not they can be released. Bond should go back to the middle and play as as a defensive run with midfielder - a role his skills and attributes seem better suited to. I cannot quite understand why Lanced Boyle is playing there given he is a top up and will not be part of the AFL side in the future. We need to see whether Gollant can be a regular AFL footballer. Lets try him on the wing where he played for Calder or in defence as his forward performance is not improving.

We also need to think carefully about what is going to happen with our backline when Murray returns. He clearly is one of our key players and performed brilliantly when he returned to play on the weekend. If he plays at CHB and Keane is at FB why not keep a well performed Borlase in the Back pocket rather than Butts who is a solid player but kills out rebound game with slow play and long kicks down the line because his short kicks are notoriously unreliable. Josh Worrell when he returns could play forward, on the wing or at half back. A back line with these players and Milera, Hinge, Ryan and Max would be one of the better ones in the league.

It's interesting what you say about Madgen training Curtin and Ryan. I only watched most of the last quarter, and noted how poor Curtin looked. I don't know if the defensive training is working, but I was particularly shocked to see Curtin just belt forward on the outside of a stoppage, leaving his bemused opponent completely on his own to participate in any forward Wests move! He doesn't have a defensive bone in his body.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but we are already the next St Kilda.

Excellent post bigman could not have put it better all bar the Borlase bit.
Borlase is great depth but that's it sadly.

Developmeny you know AFC development. The player Jordan Butts has become is almost the direct opposite of what we saw in him to draft him.
In his 3 years for the Murray Bushrangers as an underager, top ager and an overager and as an underager for Vic Country the player he was then and what we seem to have developed him into are poles apart, a stark difference even.

Mind you I'm pretty sure he's often been played when a fair way off 100% fit which also feeds into that.

The lack of talk about Tex's contract has me thinking he has either decided to retire or a deal has already been done.

This time last year his management were leaking all kinds of rumours to the media to force a deal.
Mform has dropped off, so they might be waiting for a strong patch before making noise

So finals are out of the question this year. Time to start playing kids, god knows we can't play worse
Strachan, Curtin, Dowling should play as much as possible. Ryan & Taylor given a go as well. Murray and TT back in once fit. Pedlar if he shows some form.

From the current 23:
Smith - played his last game. Retire. Ryan/Hamill in for him (or play short, still better off)
ROB - have a go in the SANFL, earn your spot back. Strachan in. Would try to trade
Crouch - out for the year. Unlucky as was probably on track to win the B&F. Dowling in
Murphy - nope. Would delist, certainly not played ahead of names listed at the top.
Tex - week off this week. Max 1 year deal after this year, I wouldnt be surprised if he retired
Laird - HB or out of the team, no more mid minutes. Was encouraged by him playing Q4 at HB last week, a move Nicks made when it was already too late. And he didnt totally suck there. Wouldnt be against trading if someone wanted an experienced accumulator for a pick under 30. Im sure if he played for a vic team the media would ensure they got 2 firsts for him though.
Borlase - decent depth, only plays if 2 of Butts/Murray/Keane are injured. Curtin into side for him
Schoenberg - give him another game this week but thin ice. Retain on list either way
Cook - same
Berry - only survives due to Crouch injury, would drop him for an in form player in the SANFL if/when they exist. Retain
Burgess - I dont think he's in our best 23, but actually tried last week, and with Tex out, he definitely stays. Retain

plus McHenry - see Murphy above

Fortunately the draft has many mids, and we really need to pick a good one. Get Welsh in as well, and if we (likely) cannot entice a name such as LDU or Perryman, then load up for a FA next year that isnt named Petty. Do NOT get any types of players such as: half forwards, KPD, KPF. Get a cheap ruck in such as Moyle from GC.

What’s everyone going to do when Dowling comes in and the honeymoon of having a new player is replaced with the realisation he isn’t the player we are in desperate need of?

Not saying that is a definite reality. But, given his deficiencies with disposal, it’s likely.

My point being, the answers aren’t going to come from what we have. But rather what we don’t have yet.

Our future midfield (bar Soligo) isn’t even at the club yet, is my guess. It’s a long, long road. I hope we are all ready for it.

Dawson Rankine Soligo is decent. 1 of those wasnt playing on the weekend, and the other shouldnt have. Didnt help. But need 3-4 extra

Won't know that if we don't try now will we

All but six - Dawson, Rankine, Max, Soligo, Thilthorpe, Fogarty (just) - should be on the trade table.
Depressingly - apart from Rachele, Worrell, Curtin, perhaps Pedlar and N Murray - who would get a nibble of genuine interest from other clubs?

Wonder if he'll get coaches votes?
Borlase received 1x AFLCA vote for the Hawthorn game - the only Crows player to receive a vote.

The AFLCA votes were:
10 - Dylan Moore
5 - Jack Ginnivan
5 - Jai Newcombe
5 - Will Day
4 - Jack Scrimshaw
1 - James Borlase

How did he play back then? Im still hopeful for him to do well- only 24 and contracted till 2026

I can only see Scrimshaw getting a 4 and 0. Mitchell must have liked Scrimshaw's game.

I’m surprised Mitchell didn’t give Brodie Smith some votes…
