Let’s hope. Swans will have their own late first rounder (17-20) and then also end of first round pick from Kangas trade last year, after being pissed with Dawson compo they are somewhat of a threat in my eyes esp considering they could do with such a player
No team is going to bid on a player earlier than the point where they rank him in the draft, because they run the risk of being stuck with them.

There are currently no indications that Welsh is rated in the top 30 by any club.

I understand the sentiment. We dont want his money on our books but we dont want to risk him being ports final piece
More to the point, we don’t want to spend valuable draft resources on a player who is softer than butter, and almost certain to go AWOL under finals pressure.

what do people think of this?

Our F1 for brisbane pick 14 and Brisbane F1. 14 Slides to 17/18 and is useless to brisbane as it gets swallowed by the Ashcroft bid.

Brisbane F1 for Luko
pick 14 (becomes 17) for dodson

Why do we want to add players to the rookie list? It's easy enough to get six main list vacancies - that's a good number.
Not without delisting contracted players it isn't. Doing that has salary cap implications.

It appears likely that we will be biting the bullet and offloading Chris Burgess a year early. It's highly unlikely that we will be doing it for a 2nd player as well.

Well, according to FootyWire Fremantle have both Liam Reidy and Max Knobel out of contract this year. Either one would be an improvement on Strauchan. If we want to go big next year, Tom De Koning will be a Restricted Free Agent next year, and his brother Sam is coming out of contract as well. But, this is Adelaide, so most likely this will never occur.
carlton will match whatever with de koning so yeh that's not happening

reidy and knobel i havent seen enough of them to say better than strachan. clearly sweet was a miss for us... and didn't show any interest from memory

Aren’t recent reports (rumours) saying he doesn’t have a contract for 2025? Either way, he seems very likely gone and if we need to pay out a smallish contract for 2025 I imagine (300-350k max perhaps) then so be it. We need the list spot and he has shown he ain’t up to it

we are unsure
footywires data was updated between last week and this week changing his end date from 2024 to 2025 which is odd. still unclear.

but there's enough whispers to suggest either way hes gone (just delisted) we desperately need the list spot clearly

More likely to take Dodson I reckon

I don’t think we did - because once again, even with Doedee and McAdam leaving we were still very tight for list spots from memory

We really have no idea. Footywire have updated their contracts list, and now have him at 2025. It's highly unlikely that he uprooted himself and moved interstate without the certainty of a 2-year contract.

Nothing has been confirmed - but I'd be 80% certain that it's a 2-year contract.

Swans you mean? Possibly right but the reality is they have 2 picks (around 17–22) which COULD be a threat for Welsh as they have a need for this 3rd tall IMO but upon reflecting with Mego’s and Vaders comments I agree with let things just play out and let him go if necessary and early bid received. What would be most disappointing IFit happened would be a bid with (current) pick 24 meaning we need to use 25 to match assuming we do,want him and value him say 25-30 in the draft.

We have brilliantly avoided that possibility by spending 25 on ANB. ;)

Supposedly…I would be disappointed if that’s the case as I am sure most would be. Even then it’s probably 25 out and a later pick coming back but to be clear I don’t want that. Top 30 sounds very good in this draft and it’s too much to give up. I rate Reidy and he historically hasn’t overpaid for players besides he Fagan-inspired Gibbs debacle so I won’t get too upset until things ACTUALLY happen.

Much prefer a future second but I was also giving that up for Luko haha

If we get Cummin and ANB (for fair price) that’s the minimum acceptable off season for us. Get Luko, Rosas and someone not even on the radar and it’s a big win.

Luko to wing / hff -> into third tall forward at times and from 2026 onwards perhaps
ANB makes Murphy redundant (Murph contract up with Reid’s biggest mistakes)
Cummin wing / hbf

All 3 are first 18 players and ANB probabky top 10 for the next 3-4 years and Luko has a CHANCE to become an elite player IF he overcomes weaknesses. His kicking is leagues best, or very close to, with good footy nous and a huge tank. Will always be a first team player IMO but needs to improve to be a top 5-7 player at the club to really leverage his natural assets.

Cummin for 4 years - assuming lack of recurring injuries - an excellent pick covering multiple positions with wing or hbf most likely (Milera unfortunately could be cooked despite me really rating him, Smith is cooked and Jones major regression this year. Backline

Worrell Butts/Keane Max
Cummin Murray Hinge

# one spare KPD listed above which has been needed in recent years with injuries. If NO “gorilla” forward I prefer Keane over Butts

Looks pretty exciting to me. Our forward line

Keays/Luko The Fog Rachele
ANB/Rankine (resting) TT Tex/Welsh over time

Lots of A grade talent there inc picks 2 (TT, Luko), pick 3 (Rankine), pick 5 (Rachele) and pick 12 (The Fog)

We have the makings of both an excellent defence AND forward line. And mids…

Ruck - needs replacing ASAP
Mids - Dawson and Rankine (both elite AA calibre), Soli (B+ probably never fully elite), pick 4 likely elite, Curtin ideally. Rachele and Taylor. If you have 3 elite mids you have an elite midfield. We ain’t far off that going forward.

I know I am a happy clapper but please understand we have the nucleus of a very good team here that is also one of the youngest. Despite buggering up a few first rounders that do hurt (Jones, number 6 from 2019) we have also brought in excellent talent cheaply (mostly for nothing trade wise) mainly in the backline with Hinge, Keane, Murray, Butts and now hopefully Cummin

This team - yes assuming it’s well coached - should have a good 6-8 year premiership window opening over the next couple of years

Will take a Valium and lie down now

I'm convinced Luko is going to Port. It's the reason he has stayed quiet and not declared anything yet.
Port need him more than we do as well. Dixon is cooked and Marshall's career hangs in the balance. They will go all out for him.

If they don't trade Houston, then we will get Cummins.

You may well be right mate. Any inside word or gut feel?

The reality is Power do NEED him more as a forward (esp as we have Welsh incoming) but this comes down to Reid to do the deal. Issue is not wanting to overpay too much on Luko both $$ and draft capital

we are getting cummings dont worry about that one

luko my interpretation is
1. he doesnt want to leave and hence does not nominate anything
2. GC want him off the books but want a first round pick
3. neither SA club wants/has it to give but are ok to swallow the money
4. some vic clubs have better trade capital which suits GC but jack wont go - doesnt stop GC shopping him to melbourne clubs to pressure the SA clubs

there is no reason for him to wait for port to be out to nominate. if he was leaving port then yes but not this way around.

Pure conjecture on my part. I've heard nothing.
