The counter to this is SOS also knows - just as our club insiders do - that Ben Camporeale isn’t really the 45th best of his draft class and is only ranked that way because he didn’t play at the highest levels and that was likely strategic

And SOS would also know we would match. I also recall someone mentioning Port could bid too right before SOS given Ben is a local boy and they would have seen more of him too.

As we get closer to the draft the club will have a better sense of who (if anyone) may bid on Ben. But for now I think it would be prudent to assume we have to do something with pick 38 to protect it (eg upgrade it by moving from 3 to 4, or switch to F2 and then back again into this years draft when we are able to.

If he is happy to take him at pick 32 then I wouldn't be surprised to see a bid. That's my point - I think we all know he's not the 45th best, but my point was more around he's not going to do something stupid for the sake of annoying someone, they'll only bid if they actually think he's worth it.

If he really is worth it and is rated more in the 20s (perhaps where I, and I think most, would place him) then we still shouldn't be worried because giving up 38 for him is great value.

Looking at the latest phantom/mock draft, I’m still thinking two or even 3 top 20 picks would have been better than pick 3.

Hannaford, Trainer, Lindsay and Berry all rated from 17-28, a few other key defenders in their too
Agree, especially Xavier Lindsay Vic Country boy , 183cm a balanced midfielder offers a deft touch & ball use, speed, running power and kicking skills we desperately need. Not a popular selection it seems but should amongst top 15 lads.

Both are better options for us anyway.

I would love to make Adelaide pay up for 3 and we get 4 and a nice little windfall. That way we take whoever is left over.
Pick swaps do not happen like this. Clubs trade to get ahead of the club they fear will take a target. Not with that club itself. Of course we want it and that's why I keep reading it but seriously. Adelaide are not going to do that... They will not trade for 3 with us.

If we are being revisionary don’t forget Calsher Dear.

Not being revisionary. Thats how i think recruiters would have them ranked going into the respective drafts. If you're talking about Watson being slightly higher than McKercher, i think more recruiters may have had him slightly higher, just not North.

Its only guess work but thats how i reckon they'd rate them. But hey, they'd all be slightly different individually.

While it's exciting to see who we select at 3, I would have preferred 12 and 14
Really depends on how you view our team.

If you're of the view that our midfield is one-paced and not good enough to challenge - pick 3 is the best option.

If you think our midfield is good enough - 12 and 14 are ideal spots to fill other list holes.

I can understand both perspectives, but I think what we can get at pick 3 will make the biggest difference to our team.

It means different things to different clubs. It's a point of difference compared to what you already have. For Carlton, in a midfield sense, it would be burst, pace, hitting the scoreboard from the midfield (although we can argue that Cripps showed this in 2024).
Composure, clean hands, hitting targets under pressure, hitting the scoreboard, speed and acceleration would all be points of difference compared to anyone in our midfield.

While accepting that Draper playing SANFL is a positive, the others not playing against men, does not mean they can't. This sort of advantage only matters until drafted. They are all in the same system after being drafted.

Yep but it’s such a good head start knowing ‘IF’ we draft him he’s playing round 1 and wouldn’t look out of place.

Our midfield is too one paced like ports was a few years ago then they got Rozee/Butters and changed immensely.

12/14 would’ve been good but our main issue right now is speed and through the midfield.

Wilson might be the one who may take the next step as well to help.

Agreed. I think we can fix our other issues with development from within and cheaper pick ups. Whereas it’s almost impossible to find a fast and classy midfielder without drafting them yourself most likely in the top 5.

All will become apparent on night two of the draft. If we can pick up one of the seemingly quality KPD with ~38 as well as the Camporeale boys it will be a master stroke.

Think there are good players who would suit us at 12 and 14, but if we get a top end mid with power, run and a defensive want with a premium pick that few of us expected to have for perhaps a decade or more it becomes a generational move. We absolutely need to invest in key backs though.

Seemingly the club rate other needs as being lesser. Many of us wanted a small forward option, but a top tier mid to team with our existing “fleet” and Cody Walker in a couple of years sets us up for a very long time.

And its looking increasingly likely that we will now get a shot at 1 or 2 of the KPD types at 38 that will fill the other list hole.

At the expense of Kennedy who was deemed part of that midfield that made us too slow and not yet quite good enough.

The result of Pick 3 and 38, then the Campo's for not much at all is looking like a masterpiece by Austin.

Fingers crossed.

Edit: Ditto Coona's post at same time.

Think it would have to be something like this. Or 6 and 18 or 20. I just don't see the Tigers that desperate for pick 2, that they would give away another top pick. Every Tiger supporter I speak to says 'keep the 8 picks'.

And the big issue for North is, what if the Dees grab Tauru at 5?
Armstrong in the mix for either up there. Though Langford could be still there for MFC (they have a good eye for their targets).

The same has been said of FOS, and also of Jagga Smith, who seems so slight. I guess we will see, but it's a bit like high school and seeing the newbies coming in and thinking they look like 8 year olds.

So you want someone who knows how to football?

Damn you and your unrealistic aspirations.

I’m still confused how Hawthorn were denied access to Christian Moraes (Brazilian father) and Alix Tauru (Swedish)

…. Yet South African Cam McKenzie who grew up speaking English and playing rugby and cricket is seen as more “foreign” than them and was therefore allowed to part of an NGA?

Rules are all over the shop as this year St Kilda has an NGA player with Swiss heritage.
Not against denying Hawthorn everything. Smug upstarts.

You never can tell definitively, as Red proved with Andy Dufresne. Cost him a few smokes.

Like to be as sure of winning tattslotto as Draper playing next year though.

Anyone else think the draft should be sooner rather than mid November I get the afl want to make it an event and after the spring carnival but it just seems to long after the trade period.

They have to allow for Year 12 graduations. In Queensland this is November 15.
