That wasn't it, it was to start managing plays, but was implemented way too early, which also impacted poorly on cohesion. Cerra and Hewett are also different types

I like Lord, will play a lot of footy, just don't think it's at the expense of Hewett

Question of interpretation, only time (and the bookmark thread) will answer

Yep. Voss tried to play Cerra and Cottrell into form in the seniors and started playing around with Hewett/Kennedy as subs etc. which stuffed cohesion as Cerra and Cottrell struggled to get anywhere near their best.

Need to select players on their merits and make them earn their place in the team.
Exactly, whether they are senior players with runs on the board, or youth that still need to find consistency

Because they may not see a player at that level that they like and gained the player they wanted at pick 40?

AFL couldn't overrule that trade, considering others that have gone through
In that case they could trade it for future picks ie something of value.

The AFL absolutely could block the trade. That’s not to say they definitely would, but they could. And I think it would be more likely than unlikely.

I am a bit concerned about George. Heck of a player but his leg speed and poor kicking could become an issue. With a fit Cerra & Walsh to support Cripps, Smith coming in, Lord stepping up plus Elijah & Docherty improving (Ben Campo) there will be pressure on to hold his spot

IMO he needs a big pre season to make his spot a certainty as we now have genuine options

Hewett is our defensive/anchor mid. He is widely regarded as one of the better defensive mids in the comp. All of Walsh, Cripps, Smith, Lord, Elijah, Doc, Ben etc. play engine or offensive roles. Cerra plays defensively in more recent times (I assume it is by direction [grooming him to take over Hewetts role?])... he always falls back to the defensive side of stoppages Ive noticed. So as I see it, it is either Cerra or Hewett for the defensive mid role. I still have Hewett a fair way in front of Cerra in that role... he is much more dependable.

For team balance, you need a defensive mid role each week. Look at the two grand finalists... Rowbottom and Dunkley, two gun defensive mids. If we are going deep in 25, I believe it is with Hewett in that role

Does anyone think Richmond's draft haul is actually pretty shit?

Lalor x factor type who likely got over drafted because of potential rather than output.

Smilie big midfielder but maybe too big? Hasn't shown a difference extrapolating to AFL level and was exposed when he played senior mens footy this year.

Hotton who has come off an ACL - a type of player that has rarely succeeded at AFL level.

A couple of talls in a midfield heavy draft that weren't good enough to crack into the top 10 despite Key Position players generally being over valued and the dearth of them in this draft making them even more valuable this year.

I'm very hopeful that they've just selected a bunch of Tamblings and Tyrone Vickerys

We’ll find out in 3 years I suppose.

Bit surprised with some of the selections

Lalor - No brainer, rated him at 1

Smillie - Didn’t have him top 12, but I think he was a decent pick for them. Can also start his career as a 3rd tall defender

Hotton - Too early for me, high risk high reward type, but I see him as Bobby Hill lite

Faull - Rated other KPFs higher, Shanahan, M Whitlock

Armstrong - Great selection at that pick, somewhat of a steal

Agree a bit, at least in principle

Certainly shy of the blockbuster Buddy, Roughy, Lewis type franchise altering haul of years past

Easy to get caught up in the Shifter style hype of so many talented kids but, talent and $10 will get me a coffee!

Proof will be in the pudding in the years to come

Do they look different if it’s Finn, Lindsay, Allen, any of the other talls available though?

Not sure. They will suck early next year anyway, as they rightfully should

Unfortunately senior coaches seem to have this default view that if your stars are deemed ready to play they go straight into the ones (Cotters was definitely a head scratcher).

Recalling what Cripps said about leadership group catch ups independently of the exit interviews and talks with coaches and game plan discussion I really do hope this sort of stuff is addressed and improved upon.

After reviewing some of the names available, love Barrat for us. Prefers to play forward by his own admission but looks great down back despite little experience. Great in the air, plays above his size, tough and physical. Even moved into the middle a few times in a tagging role, including marking Langford. Competitive beast too, love the way he goes about it.

Not all players would be in unison, every single week regarding selection and tactics

A loss or a poor phase doesn't mean either is substandard, nor does a winning streak suggest we have the perfect mix

We only need to reference 2024, you don't need to make radical change in selection or gameplan to change outcomes

I know that the consensus around here is that we are dead so keen on a key position player at 40 all but is Austin?

Nek minute we pick a flanker or inside slow mid at 40 😅

I think Austin is on record somewhere saying that we were targeting a quicker mid and KPD depth/draftee.

Don't forget about Trainor, lol.
