Vanilla probably the wrong adjective, but he certainly doesn't have the same impact with ball in hand that some of the others do
And what’s wrong with Vanilla anyways? :p

When deciding on who we pick I think a large part of it will be how our midfield looks in 4-5 years... Obviously next years impact is also critical but the future is still a priority.

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, Lalor

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, FOS

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, Draper

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, Smith

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, Smillie

Walsh, Cerra, Lord, Walker, Langford

To me looking at those, once Cripps is gone we really lack that POD type outside of Cody Walker. Adding Smith is one that sticks out as a bit too vanilla to me.
High class talent but we may run into the same issue we face today with too much likeness across the midfield mix in that projected group.

Langford and Smillie look better in that group but once again, I'm not going near them as long as we have Cripps and Hewett. They'd have to play other roles until those two finish up imo.

Think to me the first 3 are still the best options, Jagga may be just as good next year or even better than the others, but looking ahead I think FOS, Lalor and Draper provide what we need most.
We need to win a premiership with Patrick Cripps - that is the absolute priority. A post Cripps world is not even worth thinking of. Imagine the free agents we'd be able to target in a post-Cripps world after we've won a premiership.

I firmly believe we need to pick the player that will make the most impact in the next 1-3 seasons. Now thankfully any player that can make an impact immediately can also make an impact long term so I don't think it's short sighted to target immediate impact. In fact the opposite I think it could be short sighted to target a development player knowing that they may not contribute to a premiership in our window.

If Cripps retires or phases out of the midfield in 3-4 years time we could go out and target any midfield free agent we wanted. Think a Zak Butters who comes out of contract as a free agent at 2026, Matt Rowell OOC 2025 not as a free agent but as a trade opportunity, Noah Anderson or Caleb Serong, OOC 2027 as a free agent - the list goes on from there, Tom Green, Sam Flanders, Chad Warner start to become gettable.

History shows us with Bailey Smith, Adam Treloar, Tom Mitchell, Josh Dunkley, Tim Taranto, Adam Cerra etc there are always chances to land quality first-team midfielders each and every year. That's not including the less successful ones but who would have seemed like quality midfielders at the time like Taylor Adams, Dylan Shiel, Jacob Hopper etc.

If we become premiership winning Carlton, the doors open up so much. We can top up, use our brand to attract players. We need to do everything to win a premiership within the next three years.

As a club with upcoming academy, and F/S prospects over the next two years … we’d want to play nice when it comes to bidding.

That's why i'm really only worried about Freo bidding on Ben Campo with their 30's pick. There will be plenty there still seething about SOS's bid on Liam Henry before expectations and wanting a little payback. I'm just hoping young Wallsy still has a soft spot for us.

Yes which makes me happy with any of the top 4 mids. Lalor, Finn, Jagga and Draper will all impact in the next two seasons. Can’t lose.

Reckon North should accept Saints trade offer :

1.Richmond - Lalor
2.Brisbane - Ashcroft
3.St.Kilda - Smith
4.Carlton - O’Sullivan
5.Adelaide - Draper
6.Melbourne - Langford
7.Richmond - Smillie
8.North - Tauru
9.St.Kilda - Reid
10.Melbourne - Armstrong

*North now hold Saints 2025 1st pick

Ison being added, Walker is still the only real xfactor mid/forward, so I understand the interest in Lalor and or FOS

I still wouldn't be disappointed in Langford (Dawson like) as he adds a unique POD, or Smith or Draper despite being more pure mids do have burst/pace

Perhaps we look at a POD type at pick 38, or target that type next trade period

Then Freo should direct their venom towards Saints.

Melbourne will just take Tauru at 6 in the knowledge they’ll still get one of Langford, Smillie, Reid or Armstrong at 10

North would want more picks in this draft also.

I think Norf will keep the pick and reach for Tauru which is who they want

I get what you're saying. Think his kicking is a little underrated and it'll improve as he strengthens his legs. In any case, I like the impact he has with his agility, quick hands, and constant movement.

I also think he could be the perfect fit for what you're looking for in that scenario. While Cripps is still playing, Jagga can provide that bit of speed and agility we need. When Cripps is gone, Jagga will have put on enough size to carry more of the ball winning load to feed the likes of Walker. If we can get Walsh back to his absolute best, he will also provide a bit of that POD that seems to be all the rage.

Personally I have concerns about what Lalor and Finn can deliver in the first couple of years, Lalor with injury potential and FOS just due to lack of volume.

Perhaps he can turn up his volume to “11”.

Anything is possible.
Oliver, Geelong and Melbourne now have 12 months to put together the pieces of a trade that I think all parties are looking for.
Langford replaces Oliver perfectly.
Armstrong at 10 is then the KPF they may be looking for.

North would get their man Tauru at 8 and then have the Saints FF to dangle in front of the Giants if they wanted more picks in this year’s draft.
Just can’t see North reaching for Tauru with pick 2 but looking forward to seeing it all unfold …

Draper vs. Smith - why do most regard Smith as the better option?
Draper although quicker is a worse kick although Smith isn’t amazing either

Smith id say based off what I’ve seen is able to hit the scoreboard more although neither are top shelf at that. I’d say Jagga kicks 0.5 a game Draper closer to sub 10 goals a season

Smith way better accumulator and is top shelf in clearance

He moves very similar to butters. If Draper could kick he’d be pick 1 but it’s quite a big flaw in his game. Also seems to handball it weird.

Draper vs. Smith - why do most regard Smith as the better option?
Neater disposal and more of an accumulator.

Of the four characteristics I think we're really looking for, i'd rate the two as follows (based on my limited viewing of Youtube highlights).

DraperJagga
Disposal:star::star::star::star::star::star::star:
Speed / Agility:star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star:
Clearance:star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star:

From my limited viewing (arm chair expert) - Smith has better skills.
If Smith was as fast as Draper, would you even compare Draper vs Smith? Smith should win easily - right?
