Have to be happy with this

Pick 38. (Carlton) – Noah Mraz
Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country –DEF, 198cm
The key defender was limited by injury earlier in the year, but showed promising signs with his aerial intercepting ability off half back and is able to read the play well and use his frame to push up the ground and go deeper down back.
Hey Soapy V , really interested to know the difference between Mraz and O'Farrell.
My early read on the two was that O'Farrell had the better read on play and would be a solid one on one defender whereas Mraz was not known for those traits. What has changed as both have had injury interrupted seasons.
Barrat and Dennis both appear to be equally up to standard.

I am discounting the O'Farrell link with Carlton.

This is what happened in the BF Phantom draft.
It seems we only need to move up a few spots at best.

If they believe Ben Campo is worth their pick at 32 then they’ll absolutely bid, ensuring fair price is paid

They’ll probably be the ones to bid on Kako as well for Essendon unless Melbourne get in first, which I doubt, as they got a good deal for pick 9 from the scum

Um.

Yikes.

So you have the right to quote posters suggesting they have overlooked an element in the media when they have just taken it as a given because it is common practice, yet take offence when your little point scoring exercise is called out.

It is not unusual for players to have a handful of various interactions with club recruiters. Ranges from a casual “we like the way you go about and will be keeping an eye on you” through a variety of discussions in various spheres, although there would be some restrictions on formal contact while boys are still at school. More formal interviews at combines, home visits, recruiter contact, more “advanced” contact involving coaches, club facility visits etc, etc.

Multiple visits do not confirm absolute intent, as I assume you are trying to suggest.

You did not do it once, you chose to do it twice, to me and another poster in consecutive posts, like you were establishing some significant point.. You were not told what you could and couldn’t comment on, but be certain if you want to have a dig with no justification, you will be called out.
Get over yourself. Point scoring?

I was emphasising a point. Very common on here seemingly.

A dig? Seriously?

Twice? Well, actually once to two different posts (and posters), where it appeared one of them may have overlooked the repeat visit.... hardly a capital offence!

Heard of the word embellish?

Nothing more from me on this tantrum.

Some handy tall defenders there.

As I understand it we can trade out pick 38 whilst "on the clock" to respond to a bid. Obviously we would have to have the deal pre-arranged in order to get it done in time and it would have to be a 2-parter ie trade out pick 38 for a future, match with what we then have in 2024 then trade back in to get a shot at someone we have our eye on, whether that be moving up or down from pick 38 - would probably be sensible to have one of each option agreed in principle so we could do whichever seemed needed giving how picks had gone up to the time of the bid on Ben. Over to Curly's boy ...
We should bid on Lennox Hoffman to buy us more time :p

Not sure it's worth putting any stock in fan-phantoms when it comes to estimating where a bid might come.

Sure.

1. Trade it before a bid on Ben. Unlikely. Options for trading up are very limited though (as Stam intimated). Our remaining picks are 63, 68, 69, 72. And we'd be very hesitant to use these to add-on in a trade before we know where Ben is going. Alternatively, add on a future pick? We're limited there as well. It would have to be a pick swap, as we have just a F2, F3 and F4. And the F2 is Brisbane's. So you'd be looking to trade say our F3 for whose? Maybe Brisbane or Sydney? It's not going to be worth much of an upgrade. Clubs that might be interested would be Brisbane and Essendon, but it would have to result in a net increase in points for them, and it's hard to see how we can manage that.

2. Trade it when a bid comes in on Ben. Probable. Same as Stam said, a bid comes in. We have a pre-arranged trade with another club to swap it for their F2. We then match the bid on Ben using our remaining picks. Then use either the F2 we just got, or Brisbane's F2 to trade back in to this draft, probably for a pick around 40-45.

3. Don't match an earlier bid on Ben. Won't happen, unless it's a very early bid (earlier than around 20ish at a guess).

4. No bid comes in on Ben before 38. Possible. In this (best) case, we get to use 38 on another player, then match a later bid on Ben with remaining picks. Yay.

In the most likely of the scenarios above, we end up with a pick in the 38-45 range that we can use. Probably on a tall defender, as there are a bunch that might still be available in that range. Barratt, M Whitlock, O'Farrell, Mraz, Dennis.

Edit:
Another option (one that doesn't give us a pick in that 38-45 range).

5. Bid comes in on Ben before 38, we trade 38 for a future pick (without trading back). Unlikely. From all we've heard to this point, we'd like a 4th player in the draft, and preferably before ~60 where our next pick would be after matching Ben. In this scenario, we'd probably get a late F2 or early F3, which does give us a bit more flexibility next year.
One more possibility is the bid comes in quite early and we can ONLY match with 38.

Quite unlikely, but it is a possibility.

In general I think we will probably get to use 38 at the draft.

Otherwise trade it for a Future 2nd and then back in is my guess

No way Richmond pass on Lalor with pick 1 or 2 if they can get from North. If they do pass, Austin picks Lalor without hesitation
Seriously think Lalor would be a big miss for us. Will be a good player, but would have him 3rd or 4th in terms of fit for us and don't consider he's any that good that you'd take him on talent alone. Think his talent is comparable to the others.

Yeah, good point.

Figure it's something like this - bid comes on Ben at:
1-20 - no match
21-26 - pick 38 is used to match
27-38 - pick 38 is live-traded and later picks used to match

I haven't crunched these numbers, just a gut feel.

I doubt he is for us, but Lalor is fascinating. Where do you draft a bloke whose floor is maybe Zurhaar and could have a ceiling in the Dusty range. His highlights are great. I have doubted his body of work, but in fairness his injury issues could have impacted as much as FOS or Draper.

The professional recruiters will have more insight, but being linked to Pick 1, is a big vote of confidence.

I mean he's only really been talked about in the Pick #1 convo because Richmond seem to be setting up to take him there. Wasn't at 1 in a lot of the raw ratings by recruiters and punters and is firming into there now because Richmond seem set on taking him. Shades of McGrath overtaking McLuggage at the back end of the year because Essendon firmed into taking him 1, despite the fact McLuggage had been considered the rolls royce no.1 for the majority of his U17/U18 years.

Yeah, good point.

Another trade out option is the bid comes earlier and we trade 38 for points this year.

Example

Bid at 30 (503 to match)

Pick 38 (465) for Pick 45 (347) + Pick 57 (182)
