Langford Smith FOS Draper all mentioned as links to us

(And Lalor but said firming as pick 1)

Even Cal ranks FOS as the best available talent (outside of Father Suns) this close to the draft. I know its not a popular choice for many, but if he slides to our pick, I think he is our man

If he is available I can't see us passing on him. Way to much talk around that he is the one we want

Fun little exercise - I doubt this will play a huge part in determining who the club chooses, but of the likely candidates how many senior games would people expect to see them playing in their first season with us, and in what role(s)?

FOS -
Draper -
Smith -
Langford -

Far from it haha

I dunno man, this all sounds a lot like sooking...

"Every St Kilda fan knows in reality that this is not an equal competition and it's harder for us than it should be."

"We're getting whacked and we're getting whacked in a ridiculous fashion which is, to be frank, to silence us," he said.

"[It's to say,] 'You're St Kilda, shut up. You've got no right to speak'.

"No one is addressing the merits of the argument.

"They can't because we're speaking the truth and all we're doing is pointing out stuff that's factual and making an argument.

"So, we'll keep making noise."

The idiot undermined himself by building his speech on "We need to take ownership and be better" but then going on a rant about how the AFL has it in for them and the system is unfair and some clubs get lucky with father/sons which must be a conspiracy against poor shit St Kilda.

St Kilda are a pathetic club and those comments are a symptom of that. Utter insanity. St Kilda have just as much access to Father Sons as anyone else and have had more NGA success than we have had.

The only person that was happy at the presentation night was Josh Battle who was told that he wasn't allowed to go despite serving the club well (and didn't have to listen to sooky lah lah) despite the saints getting a gift from the AFL in terms of a draft pick for Battle worth far more than he actually was worth.

It's not too hard to see how teams become riddled with an attitude based on mediocrity.

Yeah I don't think we're doing the dirty on Ben on a pick in the 30's
Especially given his ceiling is way higher than that. I have a theory that we've been having words and asking them to go easy at times this year, giving them assurances either way. Though I understand that sounds ridiculous given Ben won his B&F off 6 games!

I'm sure to retain his integrity, Bassatt will be directing SOS not to match any bids on Cole, Hofmann or Peckett. And I bet he's furiously working with SOS and the list management team to work out how they can pay out and delist Mitch Owens and Windhager.

Anyway, there certainly will be much less of a chance of any rare gems being available at pick 38 if we are hell bent on taking a KPD.
There's currently a glut of defenders predicted to be in the 25-40 range, it wouldn't be a reach.

FOS - 20+ games rotating between deep foward and high half forward (limited midfield time)
Draper - 15+ games as high half forward pushing up to the midfield (the odd cba)
Smith - 20+ games as high half forward pushing up to the midfield (some time deep forward)
Langford - 15+ games as a permanent forward with stints onball
I see them playing similar roles but in different ways based on their strengths and team needs.

  • I think FOS is a greater goal threat but an inferior mid (at the moment) to Smith and Draper, so will spend more time closer to goal.
  • Smith and Draper will start forward but push up the ground as extra midfielders. I could see Smith spending some time deep foward as he is clever and could snag goals.
  • I can't see Draper being effective in that role so doubt he spends much time there however I think he gets more CBAs than Smith given his body is better developed, though I don't expect either to start the year in our main onball rotation.
  • Langford, I think will start forward as a genuine third tall marking target, rotating onball (70/30). Probably gets the most CBAs of the 4 due to his physical development but spends the rest of his time forward.

That is barring injury of course. I think Smith, FOS and Langford could all play halfback too, but we don't have a big need there as a team.

Let me add to that

"My message was less about the AFL and [more] 90 per cent for us to be as good as we can be as a football club and win despite the inequality. That's the bit that everyone ignored and went straight to the 10 per cent," he said.

"The 10 per cent is that the system is not fair, and I have a voice so I'll fight to make that fairer, but the 90 per cent is for us to win anyway.

"For us to recognise that because it's hard, anything less than our best gives us no chance. Our best gives us a chance and I genuinely believe that.

"That was my key message, not the fact that the system is broken."

I think some people are confusing us not wanting Ben bid on before 38 with Ben not being worth pick 38.

Ben is an absolute bargain at pick 38 and a significantly better prospect then we would get using that pick. We will have a plan to trade out 38 so it's not used but hypothetically if it's one or the other Ben is worth it every day of the week.

If SOS bids at 32, he isn't being ridiculous (obviously isn't going to win him fans on this board). That's a very reasonable pick to place a bid.

Explain academies and FS to non football fans and I think you’ll find most will think it’s a joke.
Well yes the Academies are stupid but hey, the AFL does a lot of stupid things.

I have no time for anyone who criticises Father Son. If a non-football fan doesn't understand that, they don't understand the magic of football and its their loss.

Do you think that they will change their tune when nick Riewoldt's kids get near draft age?
Absolutely they will. They're supporters are pathetic though. I had an argument with opne on the Main Board who was basically willing to throw away the Riewoldt kids for all the "injustices" they've suffered in the past. It's a very, if I can't have it, no one can have it philosophy. They're very damaged fans.

Yes - and following up "we need to take ownership" with "the whole thing is rigged" made a mockery of the 90%.
