I agree with that. But i think Elijah is that pinch hitting mid for us. Sid would allow Walsh to be utilised a bit better/smarter imo. Give him some chopout on the ball.

I've actually cooled on Elijah a little bit. He tailed off later in the year IMO. His lack of pace and urgency at times took me from excited to cautious. Has the skill and poise, but I'm not counting on him to be an A grader just yet.

Langford has become my first choice with FOS, I think he is the best available and in fact will be the best player in the draft we need a goal scoring mid who is an elite use by foot, I feel if we select Langford he can be ready made and play round 1 have an immediate impact and interchange with the skip going mid and forward … I hope Cal Twomey is right and we choose Harvey with pick 3!

Same reason Langford isn't. He's not considered the best talent by Richmond (as far as we know) in the draft.
I don’t think the Tigers are selecting the best available with Lalor at pick 1 they are choosing a Dusty comparison to fill a need coz they have so many picks in the first round and to appease their supporters with Dusty leaving

Looking forward to Wednesday. Seems we get a great young player no matter what, and that feels great for our future. One of Smith, Draper, or FOS and I'm happy.

FOS moves in with Walsh day one and develops a hunger to see him become elite
Wonder how much rent Walsh will charge.

Why isn’t Draper in the discussion for pick 1?
You’ve answered your own question - Tigers are selecting Lalor. So that leave North for Tauru or Rich for FOS

We’ll bat straight and go for Draper

Tigers rate Lalor is the simple answer. I rate Draper at 1, others have Langford at 1, others Smith, others FOS.

The evenness of the top group means there's no clear number 1 and such, it becomes more of a needs based selection.

I agree. Not banking on him being a star. But i am hoping he will be a classy contributer with a maybe high upside still to come. I sung his praises on here after a series of top games but he pretty much got a bit lax straight after imo. Showed his flaws.

He'll be an interesting watch. I think he'll be a classy utility type playing mostly HF, with some time on ball and wing and HB. He's got weapons and a touch of class.

I reckon his best spot would be half back. But he'll be a bloody good player imo.

His biggest weapons are his ball use and marking. His game against West Coast (yes its West Coast...) was fantastic and some of his best passages of play through the year was opening up the ground at the top of the defensive 50 after getting an outlet pass.

Would slot in nicely in Newmans spot if we can find another option to fill his position at half forward. Which could very well happen if we select FOS with our pick on Wednesday.

Again, i agree. He looked at home and dangerous that day across HB. But the "it was against WC" caveat stops me getting carried away. WC effort was horrendous that day. Elijah was great but.......

I do want to see him there again though. I bet he puts some time in across HB in preseason match sim.

Personally feel Elijah's best footy last year down the wing in transition where he had 5 metres space to make very good decisions and kick well. I loved that version of Elijah.

The version of Elijah that was rewarded after that early good form out wide with a slot in the midfield rotations was dreadful. Slow, caught, upended terribly. Turning circle of Dow.

Carlton need to know how to use him to his strengths and on 2024, that is in space using his decisions making and natural confidence.

Rather others in the midfield rotation based on 2024.

My order - based on ceiling and perceived risk to translating to AFL

1: Langford
- quality ball movement, love how moves it on quick to forwards advantage, he is evasive, capable of playing forward, marks well, not quick, but reasonable endurance, down side might be incompatible with Cripps in middle, swap at half forward and may extend Cripps
(high ceiling - low risk)

2: Smith
- ball magnet, smooth mover, I would love to see him early years 50:50 in middle and forward (footy IQ could help us up forward) appears to have focused on not just padding stats but being more effective, how does game translate to AFL - is he big enough (VFL looked okay)

(high ceiling - low risk)

3: Lalor
- a bull, forward who can get his own ball in the middle, strong mark, is he Petracca like? (if so then happy if he falls to us)
(very high ceiling but low/med risk)

4: Draper
- consistent performer, strong thru contest and appears to be a two way player, SANFL form was good - game should translate to AFL, injury concern?
(high ceiling - low/med risk (injury?))

5: FOS
- elite underage midfielder who was inconsistent due to injury, strong mark, connector to forwards (high ceiling but medium risk)

I personally think Josh Smillle is by far the best in this draft watch his highlights he is 196cm midfielder like Cripps. The guy gets the ball kick goals does the Harley Reid one Arm block and tackles that what wins you games. This speed thing is nonsense if you mid do the hard stuf. The club had players with speed they all were afraid to lay a tackle except Cunningham and if did could not hold it. I reckon Smillie or Draper. O'Sullivan will be another Cerra take my word he isn't high possession.

Right after the trade period ended I had Draper a little ahead of Smith and then a gap to Lalor and then FOS. Now my convictions have only deepened. I will trust the club on whoever they pick up but Draper is clearly the best prospect to my eyes and Jagga is clearly second.

Go back and watch JHF pre-draft videos. He is stronger and tougher than Draper, and a much better mark (not a knock on Draper's toughness, JHF is just next level in that area) but Draper has him covered in contest work, disposal, and defensive intent. He also manages to get more use out of his speed, due to his ability to win the ground ball combined with his agility.

I don't really see the issue with Draper's kicking, he lacks insane penetration and seems hesitant to kick on the run but I certainly wouldn't say its a weakness, in fact I would say its above average for a pure inside mid.

I want to put my thoughts on the record as a bit of a draft capsule so I can laugh at myself in a couple years but this is how I see it now. Tiers are ranking in order.

Tier 1
Draper

Tier 2
Smith

Tier 3
Lalor
Fos
Lombard
Ashcroft

Tier 4
Reid
Armstrong
Kako
Hotton
Lindsay
Hannaford

Players who surely wont be picked in the first round that I like
Marshall
Ough
Gerryn
Barrat

You'll notice that there are a lot of highly talented players that I haven't mentioned. That isn't because I don't think that they can become good players, but if I were a list manager, they'd be in the "I'll let someone else take them" bucket. For example: Smillie, Langford, Bo Allan etc. would never be players I would pick because I like some lower ranked players (eg Reid & Armstrong) better than them.

I think it is important to provide greater focus to clubs 'needs' over best available 'within a 3 pick range'. You can't drift far too from best available but you need to identify needs which allows the players to shine.

No surprise Beau Dowler and Mitch Thorpe failed at the Hawks after they blooded Franklin and Roughead 12-24 months ahead of these two. Zero opportunity. Roughy/Buddy had a headstart physically and learning their craft.

Dow despite his speed is an inside mid along with Stocker. Same for Setterfield. Yes, they aren't great players but they were dead before they started with Cripps in play as a dominant inside mid and our captain.

Steele a middling fringe player at GWS who didn't need him goes to the Saints and kills it as an inside mid. There are so many examples of where 'needs' plays out and makes the player.

Cripps and the rest of our midfield will be happy with all names associated with us. But jeez there is an opportunity for Draper in our midfield to help us on 'defensive transition'. This midfield in their loss reviews would all value highly a draper making him fit right from the off.

FoS is a need (inside 50s/goal assists) too so i don't mind him as well. I have him secondary based on needs because this club is intent on only using Cripps as the mid/fwd role when there are others with better disposal and decision making. They are wedded to Cripps meaning FoS 'could' end up an ok half fwd rather than a 'gun' mid/fwd. Simply a risk of this happening. Doesn't mean it will happen, i agree.

Jagga and Harvey are great and fill needs in general, but more in time as they replace others. Yes, highlight vid reviews only. At least i admit it.
