Um, ... no. Love your posts but this is a big no. Kids might be put in a back pocket to "just defend" but I cannot remember a kid being popped on the hbf for development (probably dozens ... just cannot remember any).

If most ball sports are a combination of the contest for position and possession, the most valuable players on your team are those who can turn defence into attack by winning the ball from the opposition and sending it the other way. As a crucial skill, it matters most when it's in the back half.

If the player can do that with sufficient speed and skill to effectively force each successive opposition player to have to decide whether to leave their player free or let the player withthe ball run, you almost inevitably have a score.

It's one of the reasons I really like Bews as a player, and think he is under-rated. He almost never does the easy handball but picks it up and runs forward, creating momentum. I sometimes wonder if he played rugby - not rugby league, rugby - because he just insists on developing that forward drive, whereas for nearly two decades we have come out of defence with two or three scalloped handballs (each one a bit wider until there is room to kick).

For me, momentum off half back is the single most difficult to achieve, and the single most difference-making element of a team. nothing causes the shoulders of the opposition mids to slump more than working their guts out for a forward fifty entry then watching it sail back over their heads: work wasted, and facing a hundred-metre run in a lost cause ...

I think the implication is that Collingwood are plonking Daicos there for exactly that reason. Sheezel at the Roos too.

Flagged that this year west coast are probably sticking Harley Reid there, Roos will probably put McKercher there,

Everyone looked at Collingwood having Daicos there and they want to put their developing star juniors there. I just want to stick a tagger on them.

I don’t know if Bews played Rugby while a kid in QLD but I agree he could have been an excellent player. Speed, size, tough, side-step, and power. He could have bulked up significantly more and his questionable kicking would not be an issue. My guess is that he could have had an equally successful career.

I don't understand the criticism of Clark. I just watched the replay and he was probably our second best mid behind Bowes.

His ball use was absolutely fine. He was clean and classy on the inside. His kicking was decent. He had 1 really bad handball after a mark and a weird moment where he went to kick the ball on the wing, decided not to, dropped it and the ball went out for a throw in. But apart from that his disposals were good.

I saw nothing in him last year to suggest he was a good pick. But he showed 100x more against Carlton than what he showed in the VFL last year. And this was against good opposition (he was directly matched to Doherty for big portions and Cripps, Cerra and Hewett played big midfield time).

I reckon he'll play round 1 and part of the reason for trying Holmes in the back line is to allow Clark some midfield time.

I wouldn’t say any of the midfielders really stood out but on the flip side I don’t think anybody looked “not ready” for AFL. We look to have a pretty solid B-group in the middle but we need one of them to become A-grade. Based on that game, I think it’s unlikely to be Clark in 2024 which is fine and expected for a 19 y.o. We were spoilt with Selwood and Bartel who were taken at similar picks.

The kid looked fine, doubly so considering prior to that match he had a grand total of one quarter of AFL experience under his belt. With Guthrie now out injured not only should he get another full match next week in the final practice match, but I bet he'll be starting round 1 of the season proper too.

I am actually pretty ok either way in terms of what the club sees as best for him and the team. Given his lack of play last year if they think best to let him start and build confidence in VFL then I won’t complain (unless we lose!). Equally if they deem him ready to roll then we will need to just enjoy the good parts he brings without expecting too much too early.

I agree that he should play next week in the squad of 24 (‘I posted my thoughts on that team under the round 1 team thread)

Just thinking about Parfitt.

Finding it hard not to read too much into the fact that he played in the vfl team last week when we had 28 players in first game. That needs to come down to 24 this week and 23 week after.

That feels like all of a sudden Parfitt isn’t fringe but fringe fringe! To me he looked slimmed down and I assumed hungry in his last year of contract. Has Clark already gone past him with 100 games left? Bowes has for sure to join Bruhn and Ax. They will use MOC and Holmes and maybe Miers through the midfield too.

Feels like Parf is 2-3 injuries away from the MF?

You've got to feel for Parfitt. But they must really rate Bruhn, Clark, Bowes, Knevitt, etc to not even give him a crack.

Feels similar for Bews too considering he only got on in the last couple of minutes. He was actually the 31st player to get on the ground for us with no Rohan either. So Bews is seemingly about number 32 on the list and Parfitt 33+. Both are a long long way away from getting a game based on that.

He knew where to run to get the ball I'll say that. I'm not going to hang him off that performance
It's funny how Jhyes biggest critics are those on burner accounts.

I'll brb, just gonna go on the Richmond board and tell them that Gibcus is a spud and that the greatest ruckman of the 21st century in Toby Conway was available for selction.

Account name: @Dustythegoat4ever - please don't tell anybody.

I wasn't too impressed with his ball skills to be honest, but did some nice things later in the game. The bad disposals early may be because he was pressing too hard.

IMO he looks too light to be expected to play a leading on ball role this year.

Now that player's weights aren't being shown on the Geelong site I wasn't able to check on this to see if I was right or wrong. 77kg is the only weight I could find, and that was from last year.

BUT - he is only 19 and it was a practice match.

Let us see how he goes next week.

Yeah I am deeply concerned that the investment we've made in Parfitt is a failure venture

He's 19 and playing his first match (and a practice match at that) after a season-ending injury. Give the kid a break.
IMO there is a bit of Americanism creeping in where like the NBA we seem to expect players to be coming in and contributing or stars from the get go.

The reasons you mentioned are simply why we just need to get games into him and see what we've got and minimal expectations, he's part of the puzzle hopefully but not expected to be carrying the load or starring

I was always pro Parfitt.

But after watching him last year I had to put a line through him.

Other recruits have gone past him and if Parf was to get back into the team I think it wouldn’t be a good sign for a few guys that really should being holding him out.

An insane fitness level and hunger could be Parfs only chance if he can tick those boxes… because he doesn’t have great ball handling skills and never will.

Curnow looked average too and he is the best forward in the competition lol

Rust, hot, strange rules starting with boundary throw ins

Bring on the real stuff

The best forward in the comp kicked a cracker from the boundary line, he was wearing #5 for Geelong 😉

I just don't see the point of trying to copy the premiers but do it worse than them. Coming up with a way to counterattack it on our own terms >>>>> copying them.

Add Holmes being OOC and probably not wanting to play as a defender and it has few positives IMO.

If there's a certainty in footy it's that teams tries to copy the reigning premier in some way. Without fail.
