MILESTONE: Jack Martin 150 AFL Games

Link player 100% and I’m confused he is being played in and under. His back clearly isn’t 100% so having him play the way he is and getting pinned and ragged non stop surely isn’t looking after his welfare. Numerous reports earlier in the year suggested it could end his career early but we just keep him in the congested stuff, it’s really pissing me off.

Cripps also seems to be doing all the heavy lifting and wasn’t having Kennedy and going after Hewett a factor to give Cripps some relief? We are running our 2 best mids absolutely into the ground imo. Let’s play Kennedy deep back, no let’s play him forward now… like what are they even thinking
To Kennedy's credit he is actually performing admirably in whatever role asked of him, but yes, get him around the footy more. He's actually one of our more rounded players (pace aside) and he finds a way to impact.

All i can say is please just lift for this one. We just can't give them the satisfaction of inflicting a defeat, that could seriously damage our top four hopes.
An 8 day break will be a welcome relief and boost to the energy levels of the team. Also the return of Harry, Acres and Boyd who’ve had an even longer break will make a massive difference and improvement to the team structure.

Wouldn't be a surprise to see Martin back as well - annoying that there was no VFL game this week but I think they will eventually have to just put him and see what happens.

Hopefully we get Boyd back but maybe Fantasia off half back?
With four games left in the H+A season I don't think the answer is to try and reinvent someone like Fantasia into something he has never been. If we need a HB we have Boyd there who has had a great season - elite user of the ball and is a very good one-on-one defender.

Personally I think it is Boyd in and Cerra back into the midfield.

If Orazio coming back into the team in ANY position is a hope we may as well end our season now before the Pies do it next week after their training run today.

Kemp?

If so, a conversation a family member had with SOS just before he left showed his frustration with how they were developing Kemp especially after knee. He was clear he recruited him as a mid/wing type player. That's where SOS and his recruiting team saw him

Just another scenrio where SOS & Teague disagreed

Things can still be ameliorated Soapy. We can still reverse the negligent development process

Kemp has had the most ridiculous matchups over the lat month

Add to that the fact that our mids are an embarrassment ATM, (clearances and D50 stoppages) the ball is coming down so often and so quickly that all defenders, not even a true defender are under pressure

Hold on, hold on!

People posting in here that are writing off the season are some of the same people who were talking flags four weeks ago.

It’s hard to conceive how we can move from discussion about how impossible it was to find spots for returning players in our side one month ago, to raising questions about most players outside of our A graders one month later.

All I am trying to say is that if the pendulum swung too far towards optimism four weeks ago, I sincerely believe it has now swung too far towards pessimism. We obviously weren’t as good as we looked a month ago, but I’d wager we are also not as bad as we look now.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the club talked in the offseason about trying to finish top four and gain a double chance in the finals. For us as fans, that evolved into top two. Some of that talk was probably out of necessity (so many interstate sides in the top 8), but top four was what the club discussed, and we may well still meet that mark. Let’s see.

While we would not go into a final at the SCG or the Gabba as a favourite, last time I looked, if you are one of the two sides on the ground then you are a chance of winning.

First step is to beat the Pies on Saturday. We’ll have some players back, some sore bodies will have had the chance to rest, and the coaching staff will have had the chance to come up with answers to what is going wrong. I think we have every chance to turn it all around. Go Blues!!!

Once again we are reduced down to playing deck chairs ….

in player x, y and z

Out player a, b and c

Players playing in new positions, players playing sore or unavailable forcing others to play in new roles,

In summary we are all over the shop…

Need to go back to basics and a system that we are known to be good at…need to at least stay in 8 and play finals this season…

This off season fix some list issues and train really hard over preason and practice and build on our turnover game.

Next year have another go.

Pretty big **** up if our training system costs us a top 4 spot and the opportunity to compete for the flag. I don't see the point of flogging players on the track this time of year unless they have missed playing like the VFL have with their 12th bye of the season.

Players should be fit enough from normal training and match day.
There is no flogging anyone on the track. If anything they are under training cause they are too sore.

Harry, Acres, Boyd, Martin deckchairs?

The masses are being fooled by the messenger of doom seeking credibility

It's hilarious

Kennedy has now become one of our most important players imo. Firstly he is a very decent inside mid (bull).

Now shown the ability to go back or forward, if required and do a really good job.

Do prefer him him forward though, rather than back. Thought he played a rattling game against port, one of our best.

With hopefully the inclusions of Martin and Harry, he most likely goes back to his usual mid/bench role.

Just so important to have versatility in our side, the ability to cover injury and shift the magnets if required.

I can see Harry, Acres and Boyd back in. Martin also an option.

Young and Cuningham, Carroll. Who would be the 4th out?

Cottrell maybe, Ollie probably needs a break, ???

Williams back too will help

Hold onto top 4, get a week off. Flip the switch and our best is good enough to take it out.

Going to be an interesting end to the year. I'm excited, least we have a chance. Way better than talking about draft picks.

Our (team) defence is putrid and inconsistent. We leak more scores this season than we did during the Teague Gift era. Psychologically we've reverted back to pre round 14, 2023 form (it was always there lurking in the shadows admittedly and showing glimpses on occassion, hence why I still could never fully trust the team) and unless the coaching staff and leaders can pull another Curnow bonfire out of the hat I fear gravely for the remainder of our 2024 campaign.

Milestone game most likely for Pendles and Pies play well for these big ones, like they did for Micks (even though he wasn't still there coach, but Mick got the result he preferred).

We win this may be a piece to helping us release the shackles again and gain some confidence, but in typical Carlton fashion of recent times we'll let some bog Pies players dominate and cough up a lead of sorts to lose by a goal or two.

No need for any more discussion

Summed up in 5 words

Who really cares what Kemp was drafted as - the fact is we need a tall defender and he has played that role more than any other at Carlton. He isn't going to suddenly shift into a winger or forward with four games remaining in the H+A season - this is something that would need to happen in pre-season. At the moment he is in the 23 as a defender or not at all.

Kemp is having to play undersized at times as he did last year - in a year where Carlton were one of the best defensive teams in the AFL. The difference this year is that the midfield is allowing the opposition to exit stoppage far too easily and not getting any sort of delay on the ball. It doesn't matter what Kemp does if the ball is coming that cleanly i50 he is going to be exposed.

The long-term solution is probably to find another key defender to pair up with Weitering allowing Gov/Kemp to focus more on that intercepting type role which they excel at. But for the time being Kemp just needs to control the controllables which are his own decision making and execution with ball in hand. If he does just that and the midfield buys into the defensive side of the game we will be fine.

Can bet your last dollar they’ll be in the mix, absolutely guaranteed they’ll have a third tall in the forward line they can switch to defence if needed.

I would Keep Kemp and Young in side and I would play Kemp forward…..

North and Port have both swung CHBs forward to expose us…Frampton will 100% be recalled as he can swing

its interesting how we draft players as a prospect of position x and they end up playing position y

williams was drafted as defender but was told he'll spend more time in the middle. now hes a gun forward.

some please can do it and some simple cannot. too many musical chairs (unless necessary). is risky at this point in time.

The only thing is I don't believe you can "Flip the switch". We need to start turning things around and build into finals

I sometimes wonder if the players "don't believe" when we have so many injuries? Do they not trust some of the others that come in?

Watching the last few weeks we seem to be playing very individual football. Too many players trying to do it all themselves and not sharing and doing simple things

Can we win it all. Bloody oath we can, but I feel the return of several key players and having close to our best 22 on the park is the key and we MUST get back to that clearance game that got us close last year. That's my take

The way we've been going, we will need to rely on our stars to play an absolute blinder to win games... when they don't, we look really poor... it's a very unsettling 2023 slump vibe...

Even when we were 5 goals up against Port, we were still only willing to play safe football and try to save the game from there... the plan in the second half was kick it long up the wing to Charlie. Ball spills and we have to defend again... on the very rare occasion he did mark it, he has no one to kick to... holds it up, goes short, that player has to hold it up while Charlie has to run forward, kick it long to Charlie... wtf kind of plan is that?

That's how a side goes from kicking 7 goals in one quarter to not being able to kick more than 1 in a half... 5 day break is a nonsense excuse... we had a 5 day break last time we played them and had to fly up there and still ran over them convincingly... 2 months later we can't even put up a fight? Nonsense.

The poor messaging from selection has permeated through the playing group... how can they buy in to the message being driven from the coach when the coach himself doesn't live by it?

Regardless, we have an 8 day break now... if they don't refocus and regroup, we are going to have a very disappointing end to one of the most promising seasons in decades...

Went from being very confident that we would belt the filth to now just hoping that something reignites the spark... and no, it won't be to spoil Pendles 400th... or the rivalry... that's what supporter bases care about... for the playing group it has to be deeper than that... maybe the Curnow's can hold another bonfire and they can eat pizza and sing kumbaya...
