Not an unrealistic call but, as far as pure mids go, Atkins, Bowes and Bruhn are all well ahead of Clark. Then you have Blicavs, Dangerfield, Duncan and Holmes who are also ahead of him, but might play in other positions on the ground.

I wouldn't be surprised if Clark is in the starting 22, I just don't think he stacks up as a pure mid just yet, and I don't think he has the versatility to play any other role.
Last year I would have agreed with you but I think we need to have one eye on the future and I think just going with what we have will not cut it for a shot at a flag. Not saying Clark will fill the gap but we need some fresh blood and youth. Everything about Clark says to me barring injury he is a 200 + game player. His form says he is in the mix. My view is just play him in as many games as possible whilst players you have mentioned are there for him to learn from and aid his development plus it let's him develop alongside Bruhn and Holmes.

My takeaways after trying to monitor those players that have played multiple positions in their career, during both pre-season games (from TV).

  • O'Connor : wing
  • Tuohy : mostly wing, a little in defence v Essendon
  • Blicavs : mix of wing, mid and ruck
  • Bowes : mid
  • Duncan : mostly defence, swapping with Holmes in midfield
  • Holmes: mix of mid and defence, probably more mid, swapping with Duncan
  • Henry and SDK : thankfully permanently in defence

With that in mind, my predicted Round 1 team

FB: Kolo SDK ZGuthrie
HB: Stewart JHenry Duncan
C: Blicavs Holmes Tuohy
R: Stanley Danger Atkins
HF: Close Cameron Miers
FF: Stengle Hawkins OHenry
Int: Bruin Bowes Bews Dempsey

Sub : O’Connor (or swap with Tuohy)
Next in line : Clark (unlucky), Mannagh, Mullin, Neal, Knevitt

Alternatively, they play O'Connor on the wing, Blicavs to inside mid, and Bowes to sub
need to think about who matches up on Hill. If we we kill them at centre bounce and stoppages then it doesn't matter. If not both Blicavs and Meirs can run with him but he does them for pace. The only player that has the endurance and the speed to match him is Holmes and I am not sure I want to take away one of our prime weapons.

Not what I would do personally but what I expect they will pick based upon pre season i.e Mannagh not getting a lot of game time, Bowes not playing a full game in the last practice match

B: Zuthrie SDK Kolo
HB: Duncan J.Henry Stewart
C: Tuohy Blicavs Holmes
HF: O.Henry Cameron Miers
F: Close Hawkins Stengle
R: Stanley Dangerfield Atkins
I: Bruhn O'Connor Clark Dempsey
Sub: Bowes

EMG: Bews, Mannagh, Neale

I hope you're wrong but that is a definite possibility.

Bowes HAS to be in for one of MOC and Tuohy though, doesn't he?

Per time on ground he's been our best player pre season and mostly started last season when he was fit (was sub when coming back from injury).

The only real explanation to me for not giving Bowes a full game in that practice match was that they had already decided he was going to be the likely sub for R1. Full dress rehersal and all that.

I just can’t pick what I think the team will be with any confidence.

Sure I know what I’d do… but I’m just trying to nail what the club will do and like everyone, I’m just not sure about the last couple of fringe player spots.

Here are my 20 locks for the 23 that I expect to be in

Zuthrie
Sdk
Kolo
Duncan
J Henry
Stewart
Blitz
Holmes
O Henry
Cameron
Miers
Close
Hawkins
Stengle
Stanley
Danger
Atkins
Bruhn
Bowes
Dempsey

Then after those 20 I still need to 3 more names.

I think both of these below will be in but I can’t have them as a lock.

MOC
Clark

Then there’s 1 spot left out of

Touhy
Mannagh
Bews

So in the end I being very obvious here in saying it’ll be the top 20 I have named + whatever combo of 3 from the last 5 named.

Geez if Dempsey plays well and Rohan is ready to come back… that forward line will be so hard for Mannagh to permanently get in and I kinda hope we push him as a burst midfielder.

Anyway I gotta pick the splinters from my butt now.

Riiiiiiiiiiight. So we're back to the Kolo should be out nonsense.
When will some learn.

Atkins also played only a half in the practice match so I wouldn't get too much into it. I'd be stunned if Bowes isn't a starter based on preseason.

If it were a full dress rehearsal Clark wouldn't have attended the most centre bounces of any player.

Bowes not getting in the 22 would be insane.

In fairness, you've harped on about your disdain regarding Parfitt for years. Nobody on here is immune to seemingly personal vendettas that go on forever.
Nothing personal here. Mine is vindicated by his lack of improvement in the last 2-3 years. His position on the periphery and the lack of interest other clubs have in him.

JK will play 200-250 games for the cats, and will end up unfairly maligned.

Mr Meow:.... absolute 'no way' MOC gets a game in front of Bowes, MOC lacks class and polish which stood out like a towering inferno in practice game against the Bombers the other day. Bowes is tough at the contest and holds his own with a good football brain, plus he has great vision, whereby he often picks out targets by hand or foot that others simply do not see, with MOC certainly being one of them.

Round 1 2023 attached. It looked very promising coming off a flag!

From that team I have

out: Smith (ret) Guthrie (inj) Rat (traded) Rohan (inj) Parfitt (o) bews (O)
In: Clark, Dempsey, Kolo, Henry, Duncan, bowes

If it was me I would swap MOC for Mannagh but I don’t think they will (yet)

So when you look at it there is 25% of the team different. Some losses for sure but defence is certainly better and forward line still elite. So really it comes down to Bowes and Clark as ins for Guthrie and Parf from, round 1 to see the progress year over year

I rarely if ever think I know better than the coaches. I'll back their judgement in, as they see so many things that we don't see.

However, if Bowes is left out of the side, particularly for someone like MOC, I just can't see what we're trying to do.

There's a Guthrie sized hole now in that midfield, and we're to look for a replacement in terms of size, skillset, and age profile, Bowes in the obvious replacement.

Our pitch to recruit him was that we see him as a midfielder. There's never going to be a better time to take advantage of that than now, particularly with the form he's shown.

Clark, Holmes & Bruhn still young, Danger, Duncan & Blitz approaching the end...we need more than just Axe in that prime age profile around the footy.

Why isnt Bowes getting a genuine run in the PS/Trial games. Can only mean hes on the outer or fringes

Everyone was saying how good his PS training had been then he was super impressive when he came on albeit fresh legs in a game this early is so beneficial

Bews - SDK - Kolo
Holmes - J.Henry - T.Stewart (Z.Guthrie)

Duncan - Dangerfield - Blicavs (M.O'Connor)
Stanley - Bruhn - Atkins (Jhye Clark)

Miers - Jezza - Close
Stengle - Hawkins - S.Neale (O.Henry)

Sub: Tuohy

This is the team i expect based on the games so far... dont think i missed anyone

C.Guthrie*
Rohan*

Unlucky: Mannagh, Bowes, Dempsey

I figured everyone saw it the other day but i'll post what i said again.

Just for anyone curious, Clark's stats yesterday were:

17 disposals at 94.1% efficiency (TEAM HIGH)
10 contested possessions (TEAM HIGH)
6 intercept possessions (2nd highest on team)
5 free kicks for (TEAM HIGH)
4 tackles (2nd highest on team)
4 clearances (2nd highest on team)

Any naysayers about Jhye Clark and not picking him for Round 1 are crazy.
There's been a few here criticising his disposal which as per above should quiet that noise down.

He has more than proven he's ready to go!

That's why...

Also on Mullin, if he's not meeting expectations after 1 year of footy ever then maybe the problem is the expectation
I mean, he's a VFL level guy who was pushed into AFL level very very quickly.

He should be spending the year at VFL level learning footy.
The top side is not where we need to be taking up spots on experimentation players, that's where guys should be earning spots.

The expectations should be lower than people here have placed him.
