Hard to turn down Berry's cash gen but I just think he could be a trap. Nothing about the way he plays says he averages much more then 50-60 and could easily drop 30s.

If it was another year and we didn't have so many rookie options I'd grab him. But that plus the fact he is 160k has turned me off him.

Rather pay an extra 80k for Billings who might not make as much but still great value and can play onfield.

I think it was buttox that raised the point that T. Berry is getting most of his possessions pushing up the field across half back. If he keeps doing that, he keeps scoring.

After much thought, I decided to go:

Fisher > Hogan

Cerra > Crouch

That gives me cash in the bank to upgrade some rookies in a few weeks time.

No overreactions to week 1 scores has always worked out pretty good for me, so following the same philosophy this week. Only consideration is Clark - Berry via Lazzaro. I think Clark can bounce back, but this trade allows me to move Lazzaro into the middle and give me some DPP flexibility next week for corrective trades. I wish North were playing before Geelong so I could wait and see if Lazzaro will be the sub.

Didn’t see the Hawks game, is Massimo stealing all of my boy Amon’s chips?

As a fellow Amon owner (who watched the game closely), happy to share my analysis (to be taken with a grain of salt)...

Mass definately did take a few of his chips as I suspect both players will be looked for exiting from defence (4 rebound 50's each). However, it was a weird game in that despite Essendon winning, the Hawthorn backline didn't see a lot of the ball. A lot of the game was played between the arcs or in the Hawthorn forward half, with McGrath (and Martin) getting plenty of the ball but turning it over a lot, only for Hawthorn to give it back or kick a behind (28 scoring shots for the Hawks and +6 inside 50's). When Essendon did go forward, it was being walked out of the front half of stoppages and centre clearances, meaning they were having shots from 50 out rather than it being kicked into (or staying in) their forwardline. This can be seen for all of the Hawthorn defenders. Sicily averaged over 26 touches last season and had just 11 this game. Scrimshaw has averaged between 17-20 touches the last 3 years and only had 9. Hardwick averaged 20 last year and had 13, etc, etc. I suspect in most games in '24, the ball will spend a lot more time in Hawthorn's backline than it did last weekend (unfortunately I think in plenty of games the ball will 'live' down there).

Even if the above analysis is off the mark, Essendon kicked 17 goals 5. That is highly unusual accuracy. Amon took 60% of the kick outs on the weekend but with so few behinds, it only translated to 2 extra kicks from a SC perspective and he still scored 89. With a more normal scoreline of say 12 goals 10, he would have had another 3-5 extra effective kicks and scored 100+. We have Melbourne this week who are both a better team (more time in our backline) and a more inaccurate one (more kick ins).

I still think that Amon will likely average 95-110, play every game (with 1 bye) and be an underpriced keeper in our backlines with DPP.

I would dump Lazz before Clark given his price

After watching do you think Martin is worth hanging on to? .. I want to punt him.

Burn them all, Isaac, burn them.

This is spot on, I as a Amon owner was at the game and had a very close eye on him

I am not worried in the slightest on his role, the ball was pinging from one end to the other all game so had very little cheap possies in the back end

There was also a few missed handballs/kicks to him which didn't help, could of easily gone 100+ with a little luck

As an essendon fan surely you are not selling martin after 1 week. He absolutely butchered it, he won't do that every week.
I don't want to, but idk if passing on Heeney is an option.

I tend to be conservative but I think he is worth another look at least (given his price won't change).

He got plenty of the ball (25 possessions) and his fellow defenders gave it to him plenty of the time. He often had space and time but was trying to execute pinpoint short kicks to teammates under pressure. He had 4 clangers and an efficiency of just 56% (his kicking efficiency would be even lower). He is normally a beautiful user (under more pressure) and has consistently had his efficiency around 75%. I have no doubt it was an instruction (as all the Essendon defenders were doing it) and that had Hawthorn been more accurate, they would have been beaten by a pretty average team. As such, I have no doubt that the Essendon staff will address this as whilst you don't want to be predictable and kick long down the line all the time, you can't always take high difficulty short options that aren't on. I expect he will clean up his use to a more normal level and score just fine - he had the role you wanted to see. It's pure speculation (and I didn't pick him) but I'd have at least another look for the above reasons.

I was in the trade Martin camp at the start of the week, now I’m leaning towards giving him one more chance. My cash league started last week and despite not being able to see my opponents team I could tell he also had Martin based on how his score was going up. All I can say is, in that first half I would have been incredibly stressed if I didn’t have Martin. Don’t get me wrong, his disposal was crap, but the man can find the ball. I think any player capable of getting 20 odd touches in a half deserves another chance to prove his worth.

The role was fine, he just butchered it like Tim Taranto on a bad day.

It's perfectly fine to give him another game to see if he improves. The worry would be that they stopped giving him the ball in the second half.

I've now solidified after melting hard on Sunday night. My worst start ever in SC by a country mile.

It's time to get this 66k ranked team back on track.
The restructuring begins now.

I'd like to keep Martin and Wines for longer, but I need more firepower up FWD and in DEF. They are both unlikely to be keepers in their positions, and have been replaced by Heeney and Sheezel, both a great chance to be top 6 DEF & FWD.

Also opens up two DPP slots MID/FWD where before I had none. (I know, I know. Shut up!)

Gibcus the obvious out.
Though the extra $80k would be handy, Billings comes in instead of T.Berry for three reasons.
1. I liked Billings game, and he should score more than Terry from here on out, and more consistently. Can't see Jack getting the vest again. Hunter is at least 2 weeks away with that calf injury.
2. I have good cows up FWD already, in Cadman, Sexton, and Wilson.
3. There are rookies I'm looking at next week in Carroll (MID) and Dempsey (FWD) who are cheaper than Terry.

Lazarro and ZWilliams are both on notice.
Dawson and Young will surely be better.

Next week, we go again. Another 3 trades if necessary.
Possibly
Lazarro/Clark > Carroll/Dempsey
ZWilliams/Reid > MD'A/Hore/Pink (Unlikely to trade Zac, but I will do what's necessary)

This is my team ranked 66k.

Any thoughts, encouragement, criticisms, or Double Dutch Rudders behind the shelter sheds are more than welcome.

I don't mind it.

18 touches in the first .
25 at full time .

Does he go back to the wing .

Is their to many mouths to feed in the bombers backline ..red dog..pidge...Fartin..then rids to return.

Pretty sure McGrath had 30 touches twice last season so let’s hope he only has one more in him for the year

They stopped giving him the ball in the second half, looked like a clear coaching instruction. Think he bounces back this week with no Redman.

People wanting to jump off Clark are forgetting his 80 from preseason - can play! And if Mannagh isn't the sub, I think a few may try to bring him in..

I am not sure about “forgetting” anything. That score was the reason why many jumped on him.

“Contextualising” may be the better term. Preseason ultimately means nothing if you can’t replicate it when it matters.

So it comes down to, do you hold and hope or do you recognise the role isn’t there?

From my perspective it’s better to move on earlier rather than holding and hoping it may eventuate. Especially when it’s early in the season, cash generation is paramount, and there appears to be so many options around.

A week is a long time in footy. If you have no DPP to swing Gibcus or Reid then you may just have to hold tight and get creative for next week.

Maybe. But seeing the mistakes that are there and the various options available to rectify, the most creative and sensible thing to do might be to jump on someone a week earlier than you otherwise may have.

Answerth has the bye so won't be a trade in next week...

No, he’s not for this week.

Next week though I don’t see an issue with it. You don’t always have to wait for someone to be ‘on the bubble’.

That’s not always possible and you can shoot yourself in the foot and miss out on a good cash generator if you sit and wait.

Will there be enough chips to feed everyone.

Rids,Pidge,red woof, ....de fartin...

I’ve locked in Z. Reid + Z. Fisher > T. Berry + J. Billings to bank $148,200 this week.

Given that I’ve got Daicos, Stewart, Sheezel and Young as my D1-4, would it be worth going N. Martin > J. Steele this week as well seeing as we’re all banking on Martin to be D5/6 which would ultimately only leave 1 more spot for the likes of Sicily, Sinclair, Ryan & Houston?

I was keen to keep Martin, however playing at the postage stamp SCG this weekend against arguably the best team in the comp right now, no room to move and harder to find targets under a lot of pressure. I can easily see another 60-70 score an that's not a problem I want to deal with next week!!

If the game was at the MCG, it might be a different decision.
