How about the taller version in Curtin?
How about we draft a developing young ruck that shows promise or at least invite a youngster to join our SANFL as a trial to see if we should look at them for a list spot in the future. I'd think if we offered ruck Flynn Penry or ruck/forward Floyd Burmeister an opportunity they'd jump at the prospect while either studying at Uni or Tafe or we find them some part time employ that allows them to train with the squad like Blake Drury is currently.

No argument from me, but we need a backup plan for next season if ROB is unavailable.

Floyd would suit those that want a ruckman that can work around the ground with his overhead marking, elite speed and athleticism. So much upside to come physically. Very capable tall forward too. State level high jumper as is evident in this footage.

He wouldn't help next year

Where did I suggest he would?

Geelong , you know the highly successful and regular finalists see fit to draft Toby Conway in 2021, Mitch Edwards in 2023 and Jacob Molier and Joe Pike this year. Surely we should at all times have a young developing ruck on our books with a long term view to them becoming our lead ruck? It's probably the only way we will ever get an elite ruck and they cost very little usually in draft collateral.

Not Dawson, but I am kinda interested in the "we're not going to play a specialist ruck" and actually play another tall midfielder - or KPP position player who can be a threat. I wonder if they will let them have a bit of a run-up at stoppages.
Didn't Essendon try this in the 2009 Elimination final? Worked out well for them.

100%. Our ruck stocks are laughably thin.

ROB - Bog average

Thilthorpe - suspect knees - should not be used in the ruck at all

Strachan - injured and incapable

T Murray - a LONG way from being AFL ready. Very raw still.

Burgess - utterly hopeless in the ruck. Might as well ruck Murphy if he's the option.

Murray - 12 months on from an ACL, absolutely should not be used in the ruck

Borlase - an undersized battler. Tries hard but gets monstered when it matters.

We genuinely don't have an option if ROB goes down.

It's an unbelievable failure of list management. We've had years to plan and did nothing.

Yep, it would have been so simple to address.

Even now, St Kilda are looking likely to take Harry Boyd as a SSP, purely as a back up for Marshall. Why wouldn’t we do similar?

Geelong, you know the highly successful and regular finalists, have gotten there for the last fifteen years without ever having a decent ruckman.

Maybe they play some of those kids, maybe they don't. History shows that they think they can win without caring too much about the ruck position.

Do you think more fish live in the sea or in a bird bath? That’s the simple point he was making.

Still easier to catch in a bird bath!

Interesting this year about 28 players were traded across the 18 teams (including FA etc). 6 of those moved to SA, or about 22%. Given we are 2 of 18 clubs - SA batted well above average. Similar story last year as Port picked up 4 players and us 1.

Obviously quality comes into it but there is definitely some positive movement

Are there normally any fish at all in bird baths?

They’ve always had at least one ROB-quality ruck, and they’ve also had Blicavs. Plus one or two kids.

Anyway, you are basically agreeing with Bicks, you don’t need to spend much on rucks. He’s just saying it’s a good idea to develop a cheap kid ruck or two.

Conway and De Koning were both first round picks. “Cheap” is a stretch.

De Koning was drafted as a key position player not a ruckman and Toby Conway at pick 24 hardly a premium pick.

Yeah, I'd rather we had a couple of late picks there.

Personally, unless you're counting Blicavs, I think ROB is the equal of any ruck that Geelong has played for the last 15 years, and they've done okay.

It's a pity we don't have a tall we could reshape into a ruck, someone that gives us more through the midfield.
