Not too creative, future first would be 90% of the required 15.
If we had a future first, we would hold it until the moment comes when teams are coming into a second pick and many of the players they want are gone.

It's a risk for us to hold a later first round pick (say an early trade with Carlton before the night which could be a first round in the early 20s, with Welsh still on the board). We'd want to swop picks on the night, at the right time, to pick up the player we want before or after Welsh.

Holding it for the first pick on the second night could be a play.

Id take Berry and Keane for pick 15 this year.
We need to be improving our depth not reducing it with a young list, or we just stay near the bottom.

Would prefer we use our 1st for midfielder, enough for Welsh, then look to use other picks (including futures) to bring in non-FA players (as well as targeting FA which is looking less hopeful).

We will go nowhere if we just keep net trading out players like last year.

I wouldn't be too worried about that right now. If Dowling and Taylor get meaningful gametime for the rest of this year, it will set them up for more next year to cover for the loss of Berry. We already have plenty of depth in our KPD once Worrell comes back - Butts, Murray, Worrell, Borlase can all play tall so next year we should be ok there.

Then think of the strategy if we could get an extra 1st for both Keane and Berry (maybe by getting a future and trading in?), we could go something like:

Our 1st pick (say 4 or 5) - Draper if he is there, or if not, another top mid
The extra teens 1st for the 2 departing players - grab a second mid OR maybe Dodson
Welsh - points
Load up to try and lure Cumming across from GWS (extra mature age player to help offset losing others)

Don't forget we still have Curtin who should be already playing in the AFL side and he is going to be a very good player imo, Edwards and Ryan who have shown enough this year that with an extra preseason, may be pushing for debuts next year as well.

Only major problem is the guy in charge.

We don't lose players that we want to keep. The only ones that go are ones that we're happy to let go ie the type that are capable of winning premierships. Got no use for that at the AFC.
Well... we delisted Curnow & Stengle, and we pushed Lyons out the door as well - so it's true for them.

Definitely not the case for Dangerfield, Lever, Cameron, or Gunston though.

Eddie said his son and their mates all came over to Adelaide for Berry's debut game too. As I said before, if he plays to the level he did against Brisbane, he will be a loss for us in the years to come. He had a very good game.
He had 109 metres gained - imagine playing a full game in the midfield and you can only advance the ball 109 metres in 2 hours of football, Butts 6 possessions got 140. Taylor almost caught him in a quarter. Not to mention the Brisbane midfield running riot on his watch. That’s a pretty low bar for a very good game.

He’s going backwards and surplus to requirements. We have young mids with higher ceilings that could use the game time.

We need high end talent - especially midfield talent - more than we need depth.

At this point it doesn’t look like Berry is going to be an AA level mid. He is exactly the kind of player who we should be moving on so we can have another shot at getting a great player.

Keane I’d prefer to keep but intercepting 3rd talls are replaceable and we have plenty of marking power in the backline without him.

lol..what about his clearances, score involvements and disposal efficiency for his 20 possessions. If you want to bash him for body of work over his career, fine, but he played a pretty good game on the weekend.

Edit. I am not disagreeing on potentially having higher ceiling young mids

Supposedly clubs don't really think metres gained is a very important stat.

They look at assisted metres gained - what are the metres gained by the players you give the ball to.

That shows, with inside players, that they're succeeding with getting the ball to someone in a better position who can do something positive with it

Champion Data we're talking about it this week on the ESPN podcast.

We need depth too.

We had less this year than last year & it's hurt us with injuries.

We shouldn't be looking to trade out net players.

Should be looking for value players looking for more opportunities like we have in the past with the likes Seedsman, Lynch & Jenkins.

We need to start next season with more players with AFL experience or will continue to go nowhere!

Yes. As I always say, we should only trade in players who make us better. If a best 22 player goes out, we need to get a better one in.

Has played a hell of lot better for Collingwood then he ever did for us.

Amazing that...
Not sure that is true. He had zero possessions mid way through the 3rd qtr last week
Better system at Collingwood makes him look better maybe

Spot on.

This is not a current article but as relevant today as it was 5 years ago .

I often wonder what our club could have achieved had we drafted to compliment Matt Crouch and build a midfield around him rather than to compete with him. # wasted years !

My ears perked up when I heard Campo talk about Thompson just late last week, he said that he told Thommo that his roles was to leave a legacy for those in 2017 to make the GF, that Thommo 'deserved' to be there - but they obviously retired him at the later half of the season before finals started, becoming just a SANFL player.

So maybe it was Pyke who retired him?

My best guess is that Pyke didn’t want Thommo on the list, hence the very late extension. He only played 1 game mid season and was awful. I reckon the board intervened in list management to extend him.
