Am I missing something? I have no idea how Phillips is similar to Frost. Frost is an athletic beast. I don't see that in Phillips at all. I'd rather Serong

Frost’s role is taking the deepest tall forward. If we keep that assignment structure, meaning Weddle and Scrimmers take the shallowest tall-ish forwards and Sicily is free to roam, then Easy comes in. Or we might move Sicily/Scrimmers to the Frost position, Serong take Scrimmers’s role and Scrimmers/Sicily roams free.

My guess is that is the decision they are going to make over the week.

Gutted for Frosty . Big out no doubt about it .

It's boring but a large part of our team success has been the all ground defensive structure.
We don't need to get fancy with selection here or panic , we just need the best replacement for Frosty that also disrupts the rest of the side least .

If we keep doing what we have been doing , limiting inside 50s and the like we are in every game. Our defence is already very versatile so we don't need to move magnets around.

Even without replacing Frosty I think we have this covered. Scrim, Sic and Weddle shut down the best trio of tall forwards in the league. If things got difficult the Meek could always drop back to plug holes the forwards would lead into and Chol could spent more time in the ruck. Alternatively Chol could spend time rucking and dropping back with Meek going forward.

Not replacing like for like allows us to bring in our next best fit player McKenzie/CJ/Hustwaite. But Phillips I guess is the natural replacement.

Just a leftfield thought. DGB had it over Logan McDonald as a junior. McDonald neither has really kicked on but McDonald has got a semi regular spot. Just wondering if we played DGB on Friday and it worked is there was a chance that he might just get into McDonald's head (i did preface it by saying its leftfield)

Also get the feeling that Butters wont play. Maginness should go to Horne Francis if he gets off the chain. There's no Houston.

Finally I am shattered for Frosty. He'a copped alot of crap but hes always ALWAYS tried his guts out and has improved out of sight this year. He is going to be amazing next year when he isnt the main man in defence

Surly we play Weddle on Dixon regardless and get him to do what Blicavs did on Thursdays.

Feel for Frosty and it's a credit to his season that it's now a really tough decision on his replacement.

I'd go with Serong and give him the Georgiades match up. If he can do that job it would be huge, he is ports best forward.

If Hinkley selects Dixon again after that game against Geelong, they should sack him before the game. He's worse than cooked, offered absolutely nothing all game, couldn't even bring the ball to ground.

I saw TylerDurden on the Port preview thread begging them to select him. Made me laugh 😂

Serong is the best option imo although Frosty out is huge.

I like Phillips but Serong is a more well rounded player. Can defend 1v1 albeit will be undersized, can rebound, kick well. Can run and is a solid competitor.
Phillips is a great interceptor but his 1v1 skills are probably not on the level of his intercepting skills, and if he is in, he's taking the deepest forward so those are the skills that will matter.

Serong in probably means Scrimma is usually the #1 KPD and Weddle is #2, Sic/Serong taking the 'smallest' tall.

I would consider bringing in CJ if he's fit as well, or Seamus. With Weddle more defence oriented we could do with some extra run out of half back.

If we win the flag with 194cm Jack Scrimshaw as our #1 KPD then Sam Mitchell and Kade Simpson take a bow (and the players)

(not shade to Scrimma love him, just he's giving up height every week)

I watched the last Box Hill game and Phillips wasn't particularly impressive.
I don't feel like his performance in one senior game several months ago makes him a walk up this week.
The appeal is his height over Serong but Serong is the better performed defender.
jai is only 1cm shorter than Frosty.

Just to summarise, we have the below options it seems

Phillips- 197cm big bodied. Played well in in his one game this year although hasn't set the world alight otherwise in VFL

Serong- Killed it in the VFL this year as a 3rd defender however is an inch or 2 shorter and more of a 3rd defender type

CJ- Bit more of an unknown. Highest ceiling but apart from 1 average VFL game, hasn't played since the GWS loss.

Maybe he's just one of those players who doesn't play VFL well. Also not a straight swap and is 10cm shorter than Frosty despite similar athletic capabilities.

Imo, unless Phillips has been awful at VFL level, he should get the call up. He played well when he did play and remember being surprised when he was dropped ( think someone came back?).
Serong may be the better player but it's done on need.

Whatever Mitchell wants to do, I'd back him based on how he is currently coaching.

Seamus role is covered by weddle impy, dimma.

Well done on Frosts' season - he was solid. My tin foil hat feels like he had been carrying the injury for some time, seeing we went hard to sure up the future in battle and barass

Agree that serong is the best choice, luckily ports best forwards are georgiadi and rioli

I don't want to give up the 1cm moving from Frost to Serong. I hope he has had a growth spurt.

Phillips will come in for Frosty on Friday evening.
Easy plays the last line of defence at Box Hill, which is what Frosty does in the seniors.

The backline play a tiered defensive system where the last line of defence is left with the task of being vocal and directing and guiding the other defenders around. Sam will not move a Scrimshaw or Sicily to that last line, as it then takes them away from the role that they have been playing to date.

While Serong has been playing tremendous football at Box Hill, he hasn’t been playing that specific role which is the one that needs to be covered on Friday evening.

Port should be permitted to wear their prison bars jumper this week. Would give the game the feel of an “SANFL v VFL” style clash, like the AFC Night Competition back in the early-mid 1980s.

Here is the AFC Foster's Cup match between Port Magpies and Hawks in 1985:

As for Frost being out, the footy gods were never going to let us win the flag after being 0-5, so 🤷‍♂️ .

'John' Dunstall playing in the long sleeves. Never seen a first quarter scorecard like this! Watching Derm and Knights was awesome. And Dipper with the short hair and full beard

Terrific win. On to next week. It’s Easy or CJ for me.

Easy because they may opt for a like-for-like so the others can continue in their roles as normal.

The player selected is one that the defenders can trust to come in and reliably follow the instructions and the system. Despite not being like-for-like and not having a very prolific VFL game; the back 6 as a unit may operate better with someone they’ve played many games with, someone they already know the strengths and weaknesses of, and when they need to help and cover and how they can exploit their strengths. This is how I see - if we were going to shuffle things around a bit anyway - CJ getting a nod ahead of Serong.

I dare say Sicily will have a larger than usual input into this selection decision.

Yea, whoever comes in, unless we're ready for war in the midfield, then it won't matter. Mids and half frwds have to be blood thirsty for mine, or they will take the game awaly from us. Don't allow any easy ball from stopagges and half back. No Houston, no Farrell hurts them more than any one gives credit for.

One of the best thing about Frost’s game is how fast he is in covering ground and getting to contests.

Something Phillips can’t do and is so slow. He should go well if the ball is coming in slow against a team like Port who like to bomb it in long. Will likely be well up against it if the forwards run and spread.

It’s one of those choices where every option has positive and negatives. Can’t envy Mitchell having to make a decision.

Whoever does get selected it will depend on the team to lift and cover the loss of Frost.
