Probably not. The nephews are coming over before we head into the main game. If I was to drag them to the reserves as well I’d have some pretty tired and grumpy kids on my hands.

I think it just means a training session run by the captain, but has probably morphed into just the final training session before a game.

I think so. I assume it comes from many many years ago when there weren't leadership groups and multiple assistant coaches and the captain running a training session wasn't that unusual.

I wouldn't be surprised. Rugby was always the domain of the upper class, so the captain probably came from the best school and ran the show.
Aussie Rules players were probably all working the day before a match so I doubt there was much of a run on that day.
