Luke Ryan.
He's a total stat-padder who only got AA on supercoach points. He chips the ball around in the d50 more than any other player around. I'd consider him for a late second rounder at best.

Houston is a match-winner who takes hard options and often succeeds.

Meh when we played Carlton last time we probably should have beaten them. To say picking us over the blues is crazy seems an exaggeration. Could we quite possibly beat them when we play next Good Friday? Absolutely. Those last 2 rounds have left such a bad vibe in our minds but the blues are not that far ahead

suffered an impaction fracture of the tibia and bone bruising to the knee late in pre-season, so he may have been a bit behind in fitness.

Somewhere a certain nasally gifted list manager just cracked a fat so hard a cat couldn't scratch it

Gee you lot either have short memories or delusional.

Houston ain't coming to North.

Just geing used as leverage by both Port and Houston to Jack up there return.

Carlton will match whatever salary we offer outside the cap as they usually do.

Houston will want to go to Carlton - will be sold the immediate premiership dream.

Port will realise that Houstons value will plummet next year and won't want him around.

Don't get your hopes up at all if you want him.

How did he go in the Brownlow? Under 30 votes and he ain't worth a F1.

You know that’s a disingenuous argument when the voting is more dominated by star midfielders than ever before. That’s like saying you wouldn’t pay F1 for Curnow who flopped at the Brownlow votes-wise.

I know it’s a no brainier to want to play for Carlton over us in our current state etc. But for how much less $$ wise would you take?

I imagine we would be offering 1 mill a year and the blues prob closely to $800-850.

Over 5 years that’s up to an extra $1 mill over 5 that’s a lot to sacrifice.

Put that in a term deposit that’s $50k a year for the rest of your life.

Crazy if you are knocking that back.
You are leaving out the 350k per year as a 'Visy Consultant', though.

It all evens out...

Curnow flopped at the Brownlow votes-wise in a similar manner to the way he flopped for frees on Good Friday.

In any case, my point is that Poorta can't set a price too high - if they try that the negotiations don't happen.

Exactly. We are the smallest club in Victoria and we've been shit for five years. We struggle to attract quality players at the best of times. Beggars can't be choosers.
The fact we are a small club and been sh*t for five years shouldn’t be justification to overpay. In fact, part of the reason we have been sh*t for five years is because we have consistently overpaid for players.

How about trying the following first to get our own backyard in order…
  • Don’t overpay for players
  • Don’t expect one player to come in and instantly lift us off the bottom four (especially a half back flanker, regardless of him being AA quality)
  • Balance the list positionally (key position players, small forwards, wingman, defenders that can defend etc.)
  • Nail draft picks outside the obvious ones (nailing a pick outside the top 5 more then once every few drafts would be nice)
  • Target some decent role players that are unconditional and don’t pay massively overs (every other club in the land seems to be able to do)
  • Reward players that have unconditional effort in both recruiting and selection

Oh, and then there’s the game plan…

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want to see all (or most) of these addressed before we decide to trade out one of the few good things about being as sh*t as we are, our early draft pick.

Blah blah blah shut up

Houston is a decent player but in no way a match winner. People are swallowing port’s sales pitch hook, line and sinker.

Ryan averaged more MG than Houston this year.
Let’s wait a year and pick up Houston for a late second.

Edit: Oops- was meant to be in reply to Makeshift’s post.

Metres gained is a shit stat, to be fair. You could have 800m gained and butcher it all day. Houston's a gun kick who plays a position into which we've substituted natural teenage midfielders for the last couple of years. Agree he isn't worth what they're demanding though

Ryan also has a higher D.E. Honestly, I don’t mind Houston as a player (and I don’t particularly like Ryan) but I just reckon the perception is outrunning reality. And a big reason for that is the price tag port has put on him.

Anyone thinking we are any chance to get Housto is deluded. He came to Victoria and spoke to 5 finals contending clubs which we were not one of. He has no interest in coming to north hence the I will stay at port if a deal can’t be worked out.
Yep, reckon this is spot on. I also wouldn't want to hand over pick 2 for him and would be more than happy to wait for Balta next year if that's any chance of being a goer.

Lol the Sydney was from five metres out. Even the Geelong one was 15 metres closer than Houston’s.
There can be different definitions of a “match winner”. Jake Stringer could be considered a “match winner”.

The type of “match winner” I’d be parting with a top 2-5 pick for would need to be a top line midfielder or top line key position player.

We have been shit for so long, we have to try something.

The keep going to the draft, and we will be contending in 2027 is a total pipe dream.

Split #2, flip out F1, get as much draft capital as possible.

Get Parker and Houston and as many kids as we can.

Get our chips and push them in. What are we waiting for. Clarko has 3 more years. It’s now or never.
