Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

So looks like Emmett, Knobel and Jones all survive
Don’t we only have 2 primary list spots?

Tabs, Corbett, Hughes out
Bolton in
Leaves only 2 spots.

Jones is a rookie.
Knobel is hanging out with Alex Pearce on holidays.

That leaves Emmett. There have been some indications he will be delisted with a view to being added to Rookie list. I expect this to happen.

My argument against that would be I don't think Collingwood fixed what they were worst at - key positions on both ends. Whereas Shai directly addresses our biggest weaknesses, Houston and Perryman kinda just make Collingwood amazing at things they're already good at.

Getting Perryman and Houston while having no current firsts is great business, don't get me wrong. But now they're gonna have to go bargain basement to fix their real issues.

They’re also REALLY old.

In May Houston will be 28. They have no first rounder next year.
They’ve got a heap of players over 30: Howe, Pendles, Elliot, WHE, mihocek, Cameron, Cox, Sidebottom…de goey is 29 next year.

There’s a heap of bodies to replace in quick time.

It feels like last chance saloon for another premiership and they’re going to rebuilding when Tassie are coming in?

2 words
F/S picks

They’ve probably got a list as long as your arm with who’s coming through from the next generation, so they just have to sit back , trade a few shitty picks and choose from the long line of players that want to come to their club to play at the G every week

Must be tough to be in that position

For some reason Collingwood just don't rebuild anymore.

They might have 1 bad year but it never turns into a 4-5 year rebuild.

Helps being a big Victorian club that plays in a dozen prime time games at the MCG

Everyone lauds Craig McRae but I wonder if they realise what he's doing. Early in the year he said he didn't want to be a long term coach and will move onto something new sooner rather than later. He's talked about wanting players and not rating draft picks and backed that up by trading out their firsts last year and this year for older players. They don't have an early pick for two years to replenish an old list. McRae wants to squeeze everything he can out of Collingwood and when they hit the cliff, he'll be out the door and will leave them in a shambles. Maybe that's all worth it cos he won them a flag, but I wonder if the Collingwood people who seem willing to follow his 'draft picks don't matter' philosophy realise that's his intention.

It’s not new to try to try to extend a window.

It’ll be interesting to see who is more successful over the next decade, Richmond or Pies with their contrasting strategies at the moment.

Richmond is either gonna draft a third of their next premiership side in November or sign themself up to a decade or more of doom and gloom.

The one thing the pies have going for them is that they're a wealthy, big market MCG tenant. Even without great draft capital they can still acquire talent through the free agency and trade space.

Collingwood have decided that like Geelong, they play by different rules. They'll get freebies from NGA and F/S to let them hit the top of the draft here and there and recruit whichever mature players they feel like to stay up and about.

It's a completely different set of list management rules for big Vic

I don't think it's going to save the Pies though. Geelong at least put a lot of effort into developing later picks and have some good talent u25. Pies have Daicos.

Fair play if they squeeze another flag out before it happens.

Has it sunk in yet that we’re actually getting a 25 year old Bolton!

Hand on heart. At the start of the year if you could cherry pick a player from a side Bolton would have to be in top 5 for our area of need?

We’re linked to 2 other guns: Warner and Pickett.

No one left.

Still a nice pick 14 roll of the dice.

A pick 30 to bid on Champion in a win-win bid.

Pumped!

Geelong have been held up by superstars, often F/S or FA but also draftees. So when, inevitably, they nail a pick or two (everyone does at some point) they come into a side that is mature and has a player that has the capacity to win a game off their own boot. Thus far they've intersected with and/or followed on from each other (eg Dangerfield-Selwood, Cameron-Hawkins etc).

You need only listen to Boomer Harvey talk about David Mundy playing 300 games and saying how much harder that is travelling every second week.

But in reality, the reason the Cats stay competitive for so long is because they get way more out of their 30+ than most clubs and especially us. Danger still quality at 34 but Fyfe and Walters need zimmer frames to get around the ground.
Danger is at career lows in every statistical category now (other than i50). He's almost as cooked as Fyfe the only difference being he can still run meaning they can start him at half forward. As opposed to us who have to start Fyfe either on the bench or with an even closer view of Oppo mids busting out of the front of the stoppage unchecked in the middle..

Yep,
I think they will have a bit of a leadership vacuum when Pendles & Sidebottom retire. Their KPP’s aren’t very good and I feel their luck is starting to run out.

Chris Scott is also a big one for rotating through his list and resting players. Even if it means losing a game of two, he's willing (and has runs on the board) to have short term pain for long term gain.

Mind you the timing of their injuries was fairly flukey this year. Losing Hawkins when basically he was a hindrance and relatively early in the season, allowed Neale to develop and not be figured out. Also Dangerfield came back in time to get up to speed in the run to the finals.
