Former St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt is returning to the media next year and will be the latest name to sign with Channel 7.
In another big media landscape development, Riewoldt is moving back to Melbourne after living in Texas for the past two years.
He joins Kane Cornes and Caroline Wilson, who have jumped ship from Channel 9.
Wilson is set to be challenged by legal action, forecast by Eddie McGuire, with Nine maintaining she’s under contract until December with a restraint clause.
Craig Hutchison whose production company Rainmaker is set to be creating new shows for Seven next year, is also gone from Nine.
Crisis talks were held at Nine on Tuesday morning before Footy Classified went ahead with Cornes, Wilson, Hutchison and Matthew Lloyd – without acknowledging the turmoil.

Riewoldt’s addition further fuels the notion that Seven will boost its programming in 2025.
The footy legend left Fox Footy at the end of 2022 and moved with his wife, Catherine, to her home town in Houston, Texas with their three children.
His departure after he’d been a regular contributor since 2018, came as a shock given his rising stature as an analyst and media personality.
It is understood Channel 9 had been keen to secure to Riewoldt for Footy Classified upon his return to media, but missed out again.

The 336-game forward said in October last year that he had every intention of moving back to Australia.
He had described it as being a phenomenal year abroad.
“Everyone’s integrated really well, the boys have played sport and fit in at school,” he told SEN.
“They’re a bit of a novelty with the Australian accents. It’s been great.
“(It’s been) really great personally as well to be able to live and experience a real-life MBA, being involved in the (PMY Group) business and removed from footy for the first time since I was 17.
“I missed the footy season this year; it was a bizarre experience, not being just totally immersed in it.”
Riewoldt said his sons James, Will and Teddy, had got into baseball but he was intending to win them back over to footy and the Saints.
He has appeared regularly on the Footy Talk podcast with Leigh Montagna.
Ha! Maybe those father/sons are going to be a possibility afterall….

after the AFL changes all the rules about getting them, of course!

When we identified him and (tried to sign him) he had only played about 4 AFL ad-hoc games as a fill in.

He was rated internally at the time by the bombers (that's why they countered our offer and he stayed)

But outside of essendon at the time, no-one else had identified him as a moneyball type target. Our team did well to see an opportunity that other clubs hadn't- like with Xerri.

At that point Toce was head of recruiting, but Wayne Hughes ( Who was responsible for drawing Steele to the clubs attention , and for identifying Garcia , amongst others ) was still at the club.
He had been around for a while, and its not like nobody notices state level players.
It could have been anyone.

If you read enough Saints BF then you will find Toce, Gaggs and Battle form the untouchable trio on here. The true angels of Moorabbin who did no wrong.

Toce was the best recruiter we have had since peak Bevo. He was hard done by. Gags was useless. Battle was bad loss and going to need to be replaced to maintain our only elite line.

yeah not sold at all, did well with Wilkie and Sharman
fell in with Philapou the rest haven't made a mark for 2022 Van Es already gone Hotton no contract
Nas has proven a good pick Owens and Windy were rated NGA picks, Adams and both Rookies already off the list.

regardless he chose to leave

So we managed to **** up every high draft pick since Brendan Goddard and most late ones as well until he arrived but you're not sure? We pushed him out demoting him to get Dalrymple. It's a massive gamble. Dalrymple hasn't been great at Sydney. Blew more picks than he nailed. Warner was his absolute gold nugget though.

As good as Talent IDs and list managers are - the culture and development are maybe what have made some of those players.

We Rowbottom, Warner and co. great talent spotting or the result of the system they were being brought into. Similar could be said for Geelong’s late picks that always seem to work. Development and culture.

Not dismissing the recruiting at all, grabbing someone like Tom Stewart is great work. But there’s a lot more to it than just good talent ID.

Cool thanks.
I personally could care less whether it was Toce or others under him etc.

I just hope that whoever it was that spotted xerri and draper for us is still at the club.
If so- I'll be with backing the club in to make the right decisions on soldo, whatever the outcome.

Gallagher was never a recruiter.
When Trout, departed the roll of Head Recruiter and list manager , the functions were seperated.
Gallagher was list manager, Libratore was recruiting manager.

When is the BigFooty Saints Forum, Gringo vs Stavro boxing fight going to take place? Kim Duthie has agreed to be the ring girl. Ricky Nixon tried to follow behind to promote the fight but he was told to get f***ed.

Pink Flamingo has some inside information but he won't share it with me!

Maybe, in hindsight, when we have a great young midfield given a boost by the opportunity of getting two in one year, the deal with Battle would have done us a favour.

We still have a well- functioning back line. We’ve lost a third defender and we will replace him.

No fight.

Just love

C’mon Joff, haven’t you caught on yet?

Everything good that has happened in the last 5 years = Toce.

Everything bad = Gags.

Simples.

Toce probably didn't have much to do with Xerri or Draper. Both are pretty basic anyway. Two developing rucks that were performing well and surplus to needs.

Toce as head recruiter and would have been responsible for drafting. With average picks he nailed Phillipou and Wilson and also had a pile of good kids with later picks on top of that. Garcia, Keeler, Schoenmaker etc. Was SA talent scout when we got Wilkie and Wanganeen Milera as well.

He did a better job than most of our recruiting staff did in the previous 15 years in his time here. If you are so insecure you can't handle his leaving that's your issue. He was doing a great job.

Percentages say we don't replace him with an upgrade and I'm not convinced that we necessarily take two mids with our FRDPs.

Definitely a balance there. Coming into a strong system surrounded by strong leadership helps guide and build them up. Hope for their future, ambition etc all help too but with top picks especially, you need to be nailing at least 150+ game above average players more often than not. We managed to recruit the least players to make all the markers, AA, Brownlow votes, 22 under 22s etc. It was not just below average it was the worst in the league and we kept the same guys without any KPIs until a few years back.

I think Warner is the type that would have starred anywhere. Rowbottom looks like the type that could easily have missed the boat without the right system.

To me development and system brings the bottom 15 players into line more than your top picks.

The really glaring thing with Gags when you look back through his record is he was poor at the negotiating table. Consistently overpaid for players. SOS already seems way better in that area and puts more value on our picks.

To me nailing a pick is taking a lesser rated player at a higher pick and that player turns out to be a star.

I suggest both Phillipou and Wilson were the best players left at our picks and that most competent list managers would have selected them.

Great picks for sure but not evidence, in my opinion at least, of some unbelievable drafting skills by Toce.

VETERAN SAINT TO DONS AS STRINGER COVER?

Free agent St Kilda forward Tim Membrey is being touted as the ‘perfect replacement’ for Jake Stringer at Essendon if he departs this off-season.

It’s been reported the Bombers aren’t interested in offering Stringer — who is contracted at the Hangar next season — a multi-year deal, leaving the 30-year-old to explore rival opportunities ahead of October’s player movement period.

In anticipation of the premiership forward ultimately leaving Essendon, Membrey’s camp is said to have been in talks with the Bombers.

“His management has spoken with Essendon,” Herald Sun journalist Scott Gullan revealed on Midweek Tackle.

“The Jake Stringer situation, we’re all monitoring that. They see if Stringer’s out — like we think potentially (he might be) — Tim Membrey comes in, perfect.

“Nate Caddy, the kid — he’s going to be a gun — needs help, still, (and) Peter Wright’s form was an issue.

“(Membrey is an) experienced guy, he’s 30, kicked 30 goals this year, we know he can play that role, and he’s a ripping fella.

“So, they (Membrey’s management) are really pushing — ‘if you lose Stringer, we have the perfect replacement’.”

Clark added: “I get the feeling that Essendon is happy to do a trade for Jake Stringer, but the interest (from rival clubs) just isn’t there it seems — Craig McRae ... said Collingwood won’t be taking Stringer, they did have a level of interest but won’t be going there anymore — so it will be interesting to see how the future of Tim Membrey plays out.”

Membrey played 19 games for the Saints this year after managing just seven last season

Different type of player but culture-wise Membrey is a big upgrade on Stringer. I’m concerned that the Shiel talk has gone a bit too quiet.. usually indicates the deal is done.

And had a very ordinary list close to maxing the cap. As a list manager those are things that are really bad signs. Also got minimal return on players we exited out. I'm not a big fan of SOS but he's way ahead in a lot of areas. Seems very active too.
