Fixture 2025 AFL Fixture

Yep, sorry if this got anyone's hopes up as we don't actually have next year's fixture at this stage but what's happened over this past week is that the 18 clubs have submitted their fixture requests for next season

Clubs fill out a form in which they can put in three official requests, as well as any additional notes.

Generally the clubs set to host games make the requests, for example the Hawks are due to host the Dons in their round 1 meeting, so the Hawks would make that request.

The Herald Sun is running with a few updates regarding the different requests that have been submitted, and the following has been said in regards to us, and the way it's worded gives the impression we may just get one of our wishes

Geelong is a rare club that wants less MCG matches.

The Cats have played two home games at the ‘G in recent seasons – this year Geelong hosted Carlton and Essendon there – but want to shed one and play an extra game at GMHBA Stadium.

Geelong put in that request recently, which would likely leave its sole Melbourne home game on Easter Monday against Hawthorn.

The last time Geelong played 10 games at Kardinia Park in a season was back in 1996.

The other fixture news to this point is the likelihood that the Cats will have to endure watching on as the Lions unfurl their 2024 flag up here next year. Our prelim loss to them is certainly going to sting in that moment.

The Lions' premiership win – the first by a northern state club since 2012 and first for the Lions since 2003 – will see them in the mix as the first game of the year.

And it could be against their preliminary final opponents Geelong, with the Cats in the mix to join the Opening Round festivities after being overlooked for Victorian powerhouses Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond last season as well as the 2021 premier Melbourne.

Early in the season is the best time to get the reigning premiers. We'll both be off a very short preseason and they might've let their celebrations extend a bit.
I agree it's a great time to play them up here. Bit of a free hit, where we won't necessarily be up and going but they are hopefully also a little limited. And if we drop the opening game interstate against a supposed contender, it won't really cost us that much over the course of the whole season.

Just won't be a highlight of the evening to look on as they celebrate being the best of a very mediocre lot in 2024.

Looks good. And for all the 'but, but, but...we won't know how to play on the MCG anymore' devotees, we'd still have five H&A games there if this was our 2025 fixture.

Make it happen, Cats...

Knew we'd be first up against the Lions.

Can we bookmark this formal request for 10 games at KP for use when the uninitiated try talking shit with the line, "But Geelong requests MCG home games..."
You can try. But I'm still a firm believer in the wisdom of Jonathan Swift when seeking to bring illumination to such matters with certain people.

'There's none so blind as they that won't see.'

If its 10 home games at GMHBA then its 1 at the MCG + Gather round

If its 9 Home games at GMHBA then its two at the MCG we probably end up with Carlton as a double up

Their pre season at most is one week shorter than ours. Really not going to make any difference.

Plus i tend to think home ground advantage matters more in the early season

Dear _______ ,

The Club is pleased to share with our members first, that in 2025 the Club is set to play an additional home game at GMHBA Stadium.

While our banners fly high all over Australia and the world, we know how important playing in Geelong at GMHBA Stadium – our spiritual home, the Cattery – is to our members and our fans.

With that collective desire at the forefront of our minds, the Club has been working closely with the AFL to seek to secure a 10th home game at GMHBA Stadium for next season.

With the completion of the Joel Selwood Stand increasing our stadium capacity to 40,000, we have welcomed the opportunity to host blockbuster fixtures here in Geelong.

For our Melbourne based members and fans, the Club expects to play one blockbuster home game at the MCG in 2025, as well as a number of other marquee away matches in Melbourne.

The AFL Fixture is due to be released in November where the AFL will confirm which clubs the Cats will host at GMHBA Stadium and the MCG in 2025.

We’d like to thank and acknowledge our members again in helping the Club achieve 90,000 members this year, your support and passion are unmistakably Geelong.

It’s the fourth consecutive record breaking year and the 11th time in the past 12 years that we’ve set a record for our Club membership number.

Now the road starts towards 100,000 members in 2025, we hope you’ll join us for the journey!

Go Cats!

As per club email. We are now set for 10 home matches at GMHBA next season.
Easter Monday is my guess for the 1 MCG home game.

Likely Pies, Blues as away matches.

Thankfully we never play home games at docklands anymore. They used to be awful.

Home games at waverly were even worse.
Went to St.K away game. Was pleasantly surprised with Docklands.
Looks like a few improvements since the AFL took over ownership.

Damn I don’t want more games in Geelong. Membership cost goes up with seat and afl membership is less valuable.
Playing a good mix of mcg/GMHBA is far far better as we don’t get home finals.
Really shooting ourselves in the foot here.

We should be allowed more games but why would we want them? Keep it at 9, even 8.

"why would we want them?"

Geelong makes a lot from hosting games at KP.

More home games strengthens the argument that we should, under certain conditions, be staging home final* at KP rather than a non-home venue.

* against interstate teams in the first week of finals action.

Because KP is our home ground
