Smith will play round one. He will play in a peripheral role either wing, half back pushing up or half forward pushing up with stints starting on the ball. He will fit in well because we have a big mature onball group.

He's too high grade to just expect he has to sit in the VFL for some time. He also fills a role we need with his smarts and pace.

Round one against a weak Richmond side is ideal, I expect us to go out with plenty of youth then and there.

I am one who wants the youth to play. Only caveat is they earn their spot as opposed to just coming in

To be successful selections need to be on fitness and form

On positioning: have heard from a couple of reliable sources that the engine room is being trained as follows

Ollie to rotate between wing, onball and half back.

Walsh to rotate between onball, wing and half forward.

Elijah to rotate between wing, onball, and both flanks.

Jagga to get into a similar mix to Walsh.

Cerra to rotate between mid and flanks.

Cripps to rotate between middle and forward 50 with a majority of the time being in the middle (more onball rotations than the above).

Hewett to rotate between middle and half back but like Cripps a greater percentage of time on the inside than the others.

Lord, Binns, etc. not out of contention either and will be played "as needed "

I don't see it this way. Some players can just step up straight away. NDaicos, Walsh, Judd etc

From the limited interviews and training and games I've seen he just looks like he will handle the step up. He is a natural mid. I can see him playing some HB or Wing but it wouldn't surprise me if he just steps straight into the middle in 2025

He just seems to have time, the skill and that mental toughness to do it
Dont disagree with you. Outside of mid rotation there is there is really only one other area that we need him in. HB we have more than enough plus more trying to start there. Wing is the same.

Thanks for the info, Wickzki.

The one who is a bit of a surprise to me is Elijah, because I thought theyā€™d be keener to have Lord in the team and look to rotate Elijah through the flanks instead. But heā€™s a beautiful user of the ball, so he certainly offers us something in the crunches that we arenā€™t currently blessed with.

Given he was the leading possession winner in the VFL & it was wet, I canā€™t see him having any issue slotting straight in. He had 32,27,24, will be ready to go round 1, be lightly framed isnā€™t a concern

No, I think thatā€™s going to be the burning question.

We will have a fully fit line up, does Voss have another crack at making it work ā€œhis wayā€ or does he use the available personnel to ā€œevolveā€ our game style.
Iā€™m really hoping for the later, but expecting the former

In general terms I think Voss relied too heavily on too few and the team suffered by not resting players and rushing back under done players.

The NBA have been limiting games of their stars and the soccer leagues regularly rest star players against weaker teams.

itā€™s something we should be doing or investigating
I don't think Voss had much to choose from. We had an injury crisis most of the season! We had one AFL listed player in the VFL (Carrol) playing as a midfielder and some first and second year players, mostly developing talls and flankers.

Players had to be rushed back because we were battered and bruised. Ideally we have several VFL options but unfortunately in recent years out injury list hasn't allowed for that.

If I were choosing out of the SSPs, I would take Phillips and White.

Phillips would start Round 1 alongside Weitering in defence ahead of all others. Grainger-Barras just looks ordinary to me.

White showed last season that he is just as good if not better than our current small forwards (who I do not trust at all).

McMahon is a great story but I don't see the need. I'd rather back in Kemp and Lemmey to be the back up key forwards.

Priority for the SSP pick up has to be key backs: Iā€™m warming to the idea of Phillips. Good size at 198 and over 90kgs, plenty of VFL experience so he can step in immediately and if we watched this highlight package as a draftee, we would be salivating

Do the rules allow teams to select SSP players other than the one's that are nominated for a pre season trial?

Otherwise why even have a limit? We could just pretend that a dozen players are potentially playing for a VFL position, and then pick the best candidates for our AFL list instead.

Great question

I guess we can offer a VFL spot and draft in the mid season draft (hopefully not needed as we are completely injury free all year) or next year having had a really good look at him

Yes they don't even need to be training at our club. Those rules are mostly around insurance/liability coverage.
Thanks, I do remember we were keen on Markov, who was training with the Pies as a SSP selection.

Ethan Phillips signed to our VFL side, strange choice for mine as I would have rather had him on the main list than DGB or SDurdin, but clubs obviously have more info than I do.
I havent given up hope. Probably needs to be on our vfl list to be able to train with us given our spp spots are taken. If he out performs the others you'd think he's still a shot.

If we sign Durdin or DGB and have Phillips on our vfl list, our vfl backline is going to be way to tall. Not good for anyone's development or the team.

There'd be some chance that the club doesn't pick up Durdin or DGB. Phillips would provide cover at the lower level & have the opportunity to earn a spot during the year.
