Cornes hypothesising NWM querying Powers prospects going forward and would he want to join them. Saying Powers list is in trouble and not attractive to coaches (compared to Bulldogs he used)
Not so sure. Its possible NWM looks at ladder position but if he is setting his future up it wont matter

He may also see our squad as harder to break into ie he will be a half back flanker where at Port he would be a midfielder

Dollars and prestige work better than Premierships to some

And who knows his ego might demand he be the one to lift Port

Ok interesting perspective and don’t agree actually. I would think a teams likely medium-long term outlook (1-5 years) is pretty important to many players when moving clubs. It’s why the best FA’s seem to overwhelmingly go to successful clubs. Re $ Power and Crows could both offer similar if he comes home. And prestige wise not sure many outside that “little club from the suburbs” is more prestigious than more popular and richer big brother

Also is he a mid? I wasn’t aware of that. Thought in the juniors he was always a half back flanker type?

To be fair, still think Port's midfield is harder to break into than ours at the moment. Whether that's still the case end of year...especially if Butters leaves as I expect.

Does he want to play midfield though? Pretty slight lad, might be better for him and his team is he's out in space delivering the ball. Also reads it exceptionally well and intercepts.

He was in our academy, hopefully he enjoyed his time and wants to come back. Will cost a pretty penny in draft picks though (and salary cap).

Now that we're playing better and have more talent on our list, the true retention test will come.

It was easy to keep everyone when we had an extremely young list combined with zero upward pressure on salaries due to performance.

Last time we had a talented list we completely screwed it up, overpaid guys whose best footy was soon to finish up and ended up losing crucial young stars.

2025 contracts
Brodie Smith
Chris Burgess
Harry Schoenberg
Hugh Bond
Karl Gallagher
Kieran Strachan
Lachlan McAndrew
Lachlan Murphy
Matt Crouch
Reilly O'Brien
Taylor Walker
Toby Murray
Wayne Milera
Zac Taylor

Over the next couple of years we need to generate dollars for Curtin, Dawson, Michalanney and Hinge who are OOC in 2026, plus hopefully an early extension for Draper. And that's before you add in recruiting our next Dawson/Rankine.

To do this we'll need to sacrifice some depth and move on some players who are capable of being first 22.

Retire Smith and Walker

Have a look at McAndrew this season with a view to him being a cheaper version of ROB

Delist Murphy this year and Jones in 2026

Trade one or both of Sholl and Butts.

If we try to keep all of our depth we'll run out of money for the top tier players.

Milera coming off contract is an interesting one too

Of that list youd think Crouch and Toby Murray are the only safe ones, ROB if he wants to be and takes a paycut.

I'd like to keep Bond and Taylor too.

A lot would be on minimum chips

Harry Schoenberg
Hugh Bond
Karl Gallagher
Kieran Strachan
Lachlan McAndrew
Toby Murray
Zac Taylor

Stay, go, get replaced by a draftee. It makes little difference to our bottom line.

You're right - Milera, Crouch, ROB are the three that move the needle. All three are rated highly internally but we've seen in the past a big difference between our coaches and list management in terms of player valuation.

I would have thought that Crouch’s current low-ball 2-year deal expiring this year is for significantly less than his current value to the team. He’d be anticipating a moderate rise for another 2 years.

Conversely I don't think he would leave if we offered 80 percent of what he wants.
Opportunity to be a one club, premiership player would be a part of his thinking.

Bond, Murray, Taylor the only ones I really care from that list.

McAndrew is a wait and see but we must identify a ruck to take over from ROB next year or at least be waiting in the wings. Draper will likely want a fair chunk of money to move and like some others I'm not all that enthusiastic about that if he's on big overs salary wise.

If the money is there from both sides and we are looking like carrying on the form we are showing now, he may well look at us and think a flag at the least is in reach with the players we have. He is going to be well paid wherever he ends up that's for sure and a club prospects may be a big factor in his thinking especially if the thinks Port are in rebuild territory.

I'll be shouted down, but Toby needs to show something this year. Likely to return, but I wouldn't say safe yet

Absolutely no way we chase Draper.

Taylor Walker
If he gets close to 300 he will have a May contract ie 1 year extension on the understanding he retires at 301 games

1. To piss Kornes off
2. Make a selection in the MSD

Honestly, I wouldn't flinch if he had a better offer, he can go. Think he is doing a good job so far this year but we can cover his role.

Yeah you will, a 21 year old tall forward/ruck that's just completed his 1st AFL pre-season and shown quite a bit of promise. What other tall forward depth do we have that can be called on if Burgess is delisted which looks more than likely.?

Will Tex go on next year?
