Player Watch #21: Callum Coleman-Jones - out for season after suffering Achilles rupture vs CFC on GoodFriday - go well CCJ

I dunno, Jack was good this year and he's to his credit a Tigers legend. That decision was on him. It all comes down to where they saw CCJ in 2023, perhaps a nice pay packet and assurances he was next in line would have done the job. Clearly they didn't think they'd lose both CCJ and Chol.

Who knows how long we were in his ear and what we pitched to him.

Not overly concerned about the second pick next year, there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before then, we could get it back by then.
Everyone seems to be assuming we finish bottom again.
If that happens our second pick will be 2.

Richmond offered him 2-years and didn’t budge. You can’t offer him 4-years and $2m like North and look other players in the eye who’ve sacrificed a lot for many years to keep the team together - it’s their turn to get a lick of the ice-cream, not CJ who cost the club $100k and someone their job with kebab-gate.

He has promise but at Richmond he was clear third choice ruck behind Nank and Soldo, and he wants to ruck so will get opportunity quicker at North. And he was never going to be a Jack replacement…. we would not want 2 x 200cm players in Lynch and CJ in the same forward line.

So it would have been great to keep him as he is promising and looks like being a good player. But he is a bit lumbering and at this stage is not strong enough for ruck…. he gets pushed off the ball easily ATM.

I see him as similar to Tim English or Rory Lobb…. but if you think you’re getting a bustling and intimidating ruck you’re not. He’s a capable forward who can pinch hit ruck - but at his current physical state he’ll get monstered by NicNat, Darcy and Gawn …. this all may change after another couple of pre-seasons of course.

Your club must think very highly of Soldo.

This is pretty much it.

Was never going to get a game in front of Nank and Saldo, and not agile enough to play up forward with Lynch.

He was smart to leave, and will be given every chance to make it at Nth

What I do like about CCJ is that he is pretty tough on the field, showed some real aggression at the contest at times, which is always a a good sign in my view. Very good mark, sticky fingers that’s for sure

He looks light years ahead of ccj as a ruck imho. And has won a flag.

Ccj offers more as a forward / flexible.

Riewoldt was top5 in the Coleman so bit harsh to remove him for ccj.

Yep Soldo could be anything.
Amazing he has only played 30 odd games.

Soldo doesn't have an afl background so the lack of games / development player

He was tracking alright until Hawkins took him out and was solid in the 2019 grand final.

Facts are dimma rated Soldo well ahead of ccj / chol as ruck options. Rightly or wrongly

Yep.
We got lucky. Tigers big man depth worked in our favour.
CJ is a better forward and he was never getting games with your KPF's fully fit + Nank + Soldo.
We lack contested markers up front IMO.
We have more lead up types. He fits us well. I'm excited.
Good luck with Taz. Don't break him we love him.

The insane thing about this deal is that if this exact trade was closed on the first day of the trade period without the PSD s***show and constant back and forth, the Tigers would be pissed and we would be stoked.

We essentially gave up a future second and got back 2x fourth rounders for a 22 year old that we envision will take over from Goldy with Edwards as our ruck/fwd tandem for the next 10 years.

If we improve out of the bottom 4 that could end up amounting to something like a 15 odd pick downgrade plus a 4th for a key player right in our age range.

No doubt I would've preferred it was just pick 38 or a future 3rd, but now I've had a bit of time to think about it, not a terrible deal tbh.

If/ when Comben gets himself on the park, we’re going to be back to land of the giants:
Larkey
Comben
CCJ/ Goldy/ Edwards

That’s three 200cm types, plus Zurhaar. That lineup would be impossible to match up against in the air but lacking mobility on the ground.
