So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Pick 26 Bulldogs - Jeremy McGovern

Had considered Rance at the previous pick given Bulldogs massively need help in the backline, had assumed McGovern would also be gone by now and was targetting Harry Taylor but this is perfect. McGovern was quickly one of the better KPDs in the league shortly after being drafted and quickly became the best.
We have high hopes still in Busslinger and pairing him with McGovern may see a significant transformation of our defence.

There is another player I would absolutely love to take here but McGovern is too perfect for the Dogs.

MarcMaverick you are up

Wow.

Some late activity in this thread overnight, and some astute pick-ups.

So much talent remains available - have we landed on how many clubs each team are being allocated?
I'm a TDF watcher haha. I'm usually up late at this point in the year.

If Hawthorn don't take one of J.Riewoldt or Hawkins to sit at full forward, with N.Riewoldt already at CHF - I'll be shocked.

Definitely paused for thought when both were surprisingly still available and had I been building a 22 from scratch, would definitely have taken Tomahawk (who I rate very slightly higher due to his field kicking an assist providing). However, with only 4 selections and a number of list holes to fill, I thought key forward stocks of Nick Riewoldt, Mitch Lewis, Mabior Chol and the emergent Calsher Dear was sufficient, so stuck with the original plan.

Pick 27 Melbourne

Jack Riewoldt

WilloTree you're up.

It surely has to be an elite key forward to partner JVR. Having already picked Martin, they could replicate some of the core of Richmond's success by also taking J.Riewoldt. Martin kicking to Hawkins would've been a delight though.

(Now watch them pick a KPD :p )
Would have loved to have Jeremy Cameron though.

Plus all the KPDs were dried up.

OK so, I'm going a bit left field here.

I really want someone who has leadership skills in spades, so I was looking through guys like Fyfe and Hodge who have been Captains. Unfortunately, they're both gone.

I also want someone who knows how to play in a team that has to travel and learn how to win away from home. There were a few I liked here. Josh Kennedy (syd) and Alex Pearce were on the radar. In the end I've gone with...

Gold Coast - Shannon Hurn (WC)

Can you please keep your opinions to yourself?

You keep nominating players I have on my draft board...

Apologies.

GWS take Brodie Grundy, no wait hes taken, Jaryd Roughead.

You're on.

Ooh, nice selection - I thought he may get overlooked and be available at a later pick for me. Handy when picking to plug holes to have a player capable of playing key forward, CHB, 2nd ruck and midfield (like a Pavlich if he was available for selection).

With Pick 31 in the 21st Century Mock Draft, the Collingwood Football Club select Tom Hawkins.

Collingwood are ecstatic 3 time premiership player, 5 time All Australian and future Hall of Famer Tom Hawkins is available at this stage of the draft.

Collingwood have been screaming out for a player of Tom's size and ability for a long time, and is the missing component in a premiership forward line - meaning McStay can move to CHF (and occasionally rotate through the ruck), Mihocek become the Jack Gunston type third tall forward, with our dangerous medium and small forwards such as Elliott, Hill and Schultz.

We welcome Tom to the club and look forward to him adding a further 3 premierships (minimum) to his already outstanding CV.

I still can't get over Coughlan...

He's my all time favourite Tiger and close to the best I've seen at his best.

Plus, what draft would be interesting without a bolter?

Blackhawk42.

What is surprising is Tom Hawkins' slide to pick 31.

What a bargain! Figured top 12 for sure.

Me too but I love it - not only is it interesting (to see how differently we rate players and to consider whether injuries are still expected when re-drafting) but also selfishly because it's a pick where no one on my 'draft board' is taken.

Now interested to see where his second round selections go (will it be as left field as his first)?

We're a side that's crying out for a gun key forward or gun key defender and he drafts Coughlan, a mediocre midfielder in a shit Richmond side.

Should be a veto function. Me, PhoenixBonez and boncer34 should be allowed to protest!

Pick 32- Geelong- Zach Merrett

I am a huge fan of Merrett and is exactly what the cats need through their midfield. With a young Fyfe and him adding to Dangerfield and Holmes I am confident of having one of the best centerlines in the league. Also from all reports Jeremy Cameron is very happy with some tracer bullets allowing him not to have to exert any extra effort and now being able to run in completely straight lines and gobble up some chest marks. Welcome to the club Zach.
