Another thing I have noticed with Fraser and a lot of the aussies bats...is the way they hold the bat...graham gooch style before they hit the ball

Traditionaly you would tap your bat then lift before playing the shot...now we are seeing the batters hold it up wrists cocked...this gives them great leverage when you want to hit through the line....but IMO you lose the ability in your wrists to work the ball and time it when it moves or spins.

have a look at m waugh and martyn both tapped the bat before the swing........and both great timers of the balls imo in aussie cricket for the past 20 years
Honestly, that kind of touch is extremely rare. It was rare back then, and it's rarer now. Timing's a funny thing. You can caress a ball or bludgeon it and there's still an aspect of timing to either shot; they're both still 4.

I dunno. For every decision or method there's positives and negatives. Flat bat was the done thing until your Dean Jones', your Viv Richard's, and your Alan Border's of the world - blokes who wanted to hit the boundaries, get the scoreboard moving, put pressure on their opponents - showed just how far you could hit the thing with a elevated backlift.

Old ball swing bowling's fallen out of vogue because they don't play with balls old enough on pitches crap enough to develop the skills. To bowl proper, old ball swing you need to be bloody skillful, have learned through long, tiring days playing shit cricket how to shine and work a dead ball until it starts to go again. Too much one day short form cricket at all levels; fast bowlers are in the state and national squads before that skill even has a chance to develop. Does that make them less effective? Probably not; they're still bloody quick, can probably move the ball both ways when brand new.

It's just a result of time. It's sad there's less true timers and grafters of a turning ball - Dravid and Laxman could probably join your group - but time moves in one direction and the sport only ever changes; not for the worse or the better.
