I listened to the interview with McDonald after the match. I think it's very obvious from what he was saying that he would like the option of a spinner and that Hazlewood will return. He also said that Marsh was looking very hard to drop but was happy with him down the order. He said that they would go away and consider Marsh moving up the order, but I feel that this was a little bit of lip service. He was very warm to the return of Green.

So going off those post-match remarks alone, I think we can say that the following players are assured of their places:

?
Khawaja
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
?
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Murphy
Hazlewood

The only positions that look up for grabs are 1 and 6. My gut feel is that Green will return and Warner will get another crack. Unlucky, Mitch.
I recall discussions prior to the Ashes pertaining to Warner's selection and the premonition of him facing Broad and repeating the debacle of the 2019 series.

Selectors still selected him.

Three Tests in and all the problems most intimated have manifested as Warner's shortcomings against the Broad away swinger have been further exposed.

He is not suddenly going to get better! Tents down circus over ... Warner needs to be dropped.

I'd be surprised if they dropped Mitch after that performance. Will be pretty brutal.

If the pitch warrants five seamers, Green at 7 and Carey at 8 isn't the worst option. If it warrants five seamers it means it's gonna be tough for batting and strengthening our batting down to number 8 isn't the worst play.

It's very intriguing to see how it plays out.

Our selectors have two bad headaches (underperforming opening batsmen and a bit of a struggle for our third seamer) alongside two good headaches (two good allrounders and a number of options to replace the third seamer) and one question mark (spinner or four front line quicks).

Their selectors have three bad headaches (No #3, poor keeper, Anderson struggling), two good headaches (Foakes can come in, Numerous good quick bowling options) and one meh problem (poor spinner but comfortably their best option of what's available).
Mitch really does pose a question, doesn't he? It's not that he toughed out runs, it's that he looked utterly imperious when he did. It was aggressive but composed. He's a magnificent puller and I'm struggling to think of a player hit the ball so hard along the ground. Even in the second innings he looked good. I think he's undroppable, personally. That's before factoring in what he can do with the ball. My own wish is for Green and Marsh both to play. I just cannot build a strong enough case for Warner. He got 66 at Lord's, but even in the dreadful series he had in 2019, he hot 60 at Headingley. Green has a FC batting average of 46 and it's 34 at test level. We'd all like him to improve the test batting average but, in reality, it's not a million miles away from Stokes'. He also bowls and is a great gully fieldsman. Warner only has fielding going for him at the moment.

I don't think we will go in without a spinner. Old Trafford is a ground that takes spin and it's an option we'd like on the vast majority of grounds. Again, I could be wrong, but I am 90% sure that Murphy plays the last two tests.

Not sure if we've done it since.

Did we not do it against India at Perth in 11/12? I might be wrong. I just remember Warner crashing 100 on a lively wicket (shows you how long ago it was) and Starc getting Tendulkar with a jaffer.

Correct weight

The only thing that will go again Murphy is the amount of rain Manchester is having in the build up so it's not likely to be the typical dry(ish) pitch you get at OT.

This was the UK Track and Field championships in Manc on the weekend just gone and the forecast is for much of the same for the next two weeks.

EDIT: Zharnel Hughes a very impressive 10.05 in those conditions for those interested.

Now that is something I can affirm. I'm less than 30 minutes from Old Trafford and it's lashing down now. The forecast doesn't look good for the next two weeks. It's not inconceivable that we could lose as much as half of the match to rain.

Surely it's simple

Out Murphy and Boland in Hazelwood and Neser
Out Warner in Green

Remove all spuds plus someone captain woke refuses to use

It's probably just going to be Hazelwood for Boland. Hazelwood was good at Manchester last time and although below his best in the first 2 matches has still been way better than Boland.

They won't change anything about the openers. The real question is what they do about the spinner. We got it done with the quicks taking almost all the wickets and Lyon holding down the other end last time there. The only out there move I see the selectors making is Murphy out for probably Green or unlikely Neser

They should have selected Bancroft ahead of Harris. But Bancroft cast some doubt over the bowlers 'not' knowing about the sandpaper --- Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon --- so Bancroft has been Katich-ed.
He also averaged 19 in his county stint before the Ashes compared to Harris's 57. Bancroft has an overall county average of around 30 after several seasons while Harris's overall average is around the 50 mark and Renshaw's in the mid 40's. Bancroft has never looked particularly comfortable playing in England.

In: Hazelwood, Green
Out: Boland, Murphy

Different looking lineup but this strengthens our batting. Head to bowl a bit more.
Shame Labs has never progressed with the ball. Showed some solid signs at the start of his Australian career (some of it in 2019 Ashes) that he could have been a handy part timer. Would have made not playing Murphy an easier decision.

Definitely seems like Foakes is not one of the "lads". Just saw that Somerset Keeper James Rew, who was still young enough to be playing with England's under 19 squad down here earlier this year has made his 6th FC 100 in his 17th match, averaging a touch over 50 as of right now. Bit of competition around if Jonny keeps dropping catches and they decide to start picking from outside the bois club.

Smith debuted as a leg spinner and batted low ala Greg Chappell. Head is better than an average offie and if they're going to have a crack at him not a hell of a lot of difference between he and Murphy at this stage ie. neither of them are Lyon.

If you are dropping Warner you have to play Harris, anything else is entering the Bazball realm. Putting anyone of Carey, Head, Green or Marsh as opener is fooliosh in my opinion. None of them have the technique for it. Marsh enjoys pace no doubt but he's better off where he is, our batting has been motley at best, why you would throw lower order players into opening on a traditional English pitch has me bewildered. If Harris is not up to it then why is he on tour?

Hazelwood comes in for Boland.

Green has struggled with the stick all tour and has looked shaky every time he's gone in. Mitch Marsh holds his spot for mine. Depending on conditions, I could mount an argument to play Neser in front of Murphy who was basically a sub fielder at Headingley. The most crucial part of the test was ultimately the period in our 2nd innings when Moeen was allowed to bowl a 17 over spell while Khawaja and Marnus batted like they were trying to play for a draw. Every time Murphy bowled they tried to attack him. When they eventually perished we were in a hole that allowed England a chance that they really did not deserve. Can Murphy bowl defensively enough? Probably not yet so why play him when your part timers are adequate? Obviously this is a week out and subject to the pitch conditions.
