Player Watch #46: Ben Miller - Re-Signed Until 2026

So, what you're saying really is Hardwick has stuffed his career by playing him out of position all these years?
Well sort of. Not really Hardwick's fault that others have gone past him such as Young. I was against recruiting Tarrant for the very reason that he would be taking the place of someone like Miller, or as it turns out Young. Very much doubt Young would have got a gig if not for Tarrant being injured as well. Conservative or short sighted recruiting because it wasn't backing the young players, which was a bit of a Hardwick trait by the end.

Also not Hardwick's fault that when we needed a key forward/ruckman, Miller wasn't up to it. He has a good many traits for a CHF, which we so desperately needed last year, speed and size and good skills, but in the end he couldn't mark the ball or really compete in the air particularly well.

But he ie is still on the list and still has a chance. It only takes an injury or a suspension or a loss of form from one of our backs and if he is playing well in the VFL he will be next in, so there is a good chance he will get some games this year in his best position. We have no other key backs on our list other than Gibcus who is who knows where. The rest is up to him.

As strange as this might sound but we need miller to be our billy frampton ….. just needs to do a defensive job on a dangerous defender and keep them accountable like frampton did to Harris Andrew’s on grand final day ….. that should be his role when he plays imo

rather someone that can outmark defenders and kicks goals tbh

I agree but I’m being realistic to millers skill set …. I don’t think he will ever be anything special so I thought about giving him a role that’s simple and that he can excel at
He had that opportunity this year against Andrews and a few other gun backs, but it didn't really come off, whether that was his doing or coaches instructions who knows. Thing about Frampton is he is aggressive and had a very specific role. Given how average Collingwood's forward line is, taking the intercepting Andrews out was very important. Not sure Miller has the game sense and aggressive ability to do that. Plus, would be nice if a forward could be a bit influential. Miller is a backup back now and back up forward of last resort.

You’re probably right …. Perhaps I’m reaching too far to try and make something work :(

If you have to continued to be moved around to find a position that works for you, most likely it's because your not good enough at any of them long term

He's great depth, can play a minor role in the seniors if needed. He will play a game that teases everyone at some stage, but over thime, he's proven thats all he will be.

If he was good enough, the coaches wouldn't want to move him, let alone have too.

While mostly I agree, the coaches were forced to move Miller in the last two seasons because of our lack of forwards due to injury and or lack of second ruck for the same reason. And it was worth a try.

Just not a spot for him imo and we have to be aiming for better.

As people have mentioned Balta, Gibcus Young are all in front of him as key defenders. Young may or may not allow us to develop Balta as a fwd who knows.Atm for me Balta, Gibcus and Bauer would be my three tall options in defense.
We have a young promising developing ruckman in Ryan who we should be hoping in the not too distant future becomes our #1 ruckman.
Imo it is imperative we get games into him as #2 ruck resting fwd. Obviously Nankervis is our #1 ruck and we have key forwards in Lynch and Koscchitzke. In that context there is not a ruck or forward role Miller either which he is ordinary at anyway.

I think it remains imperative that we bring into the club at least another two genuine key forwards on top of bringing in Koschitzke.

I also think as much as we need tall fwds, and i call him tall rather than a kpp Jacob Bauer seems to me to be the ideal Dylan Grimes replacement and we definately need to be looking for his replacement. Grimes has showed clear decline and is 32.

Last don't know if people have mentioned it but when you look at numbers, this year we have had a big drain on what was a shallow pool of tall's and kpp's to start with.

The drain of talls this year Tarrant, Riewoldt, Nyuon, Soldo, Colina, and Bradtke.

Leaving including Koschitzke the totally inadequate number consisting of

Genuine key forward - Lynch, Koschitzke.
Potential kpf Balta.
Potential tall fwd - Bauer. Hard to play Bauer here if we are to prioritise games into Ryan or we play Balta fwd..
key defenders - Balta, Gibcus, Young, Possibly Miller.
Tall defenders Grimes 32yo, Broad 31 april. Potentially Bauer.
Rucks Nankervis, Ryan and the cat B basketballer whats his name.

That just 11 talls including a cat B rookie and Broad who is more of a medium running defender.

Imo i think its important we prioritise games into both Ryan and Bauer.

Athletic
Adaptable
I like him

Rather gin that naiamith
You forgot soft
People talk of Balta on a wing. Has Miller got the tank to play there? Would be a beast and take boundary throw ins on his wing.
Serious? The bloke is allergic to leather.

Pies literally had no one else, plus Harris Andrews beat him comfortably. With Lynch, Kosi, Ryan + Bauer we don't need a specialist negating tall forward, especially one that offers nothing else.

Miller was our go to guy to fill holes. Poor bugger played in a range of positions as required. Unfortunately he didn't consistently display good performances. But I see so much in him. He can do what is required. That is a massive step up on most players. He has amazing tools in his athleticism and skills. But the most important thing, the mental side, seems a problem.

Being asked to fill multiple roles is a[problem for most players, and that hasn't helped him. i hope he fulfills his potential, but sort of expect him to be let go soon.

Has to be either upgraded to the senior list or delisted and re-rookied -

Fremantle will upgrade Bailey Banfield and Josh Treacy, who must both be lifted to the senior list after three years as rookies, while Melbourne will reward defender Daniel Turner with a senior spot.

Richmond's Ben Miller and Brisbane's Carter Michael will be the same at their clubs, while Ace Hewago-Oea will be upgraded from the category B rookie list at Gold Coast.

Don't believe we can do that. He has spent 3 years as a rookie

Do what? Re rookie? Pretty sure you can if you delist them first.
The rookie list guidelines say a player can only be a rookie for a maximum of 3 seasons so I don't think we would be allowed to do that with Miller. We either elevate him or delist him

Pretty sure we did exactly that with Chol after his first 3 years.
The difference was Chol was out of contract when we delisted him. Miller is contracted for 2024

Don't see why that would make a difference.
I don't think we can delist a contracted player who has spent 3 years on the rookie list just to re-rookie them.

Yeah you can. I don't think we will though. Looking like we'll elevate Miller, sign Naismith as a DFA, take two players in the ND and one in the RD.

I dont see a spot for him like most, but he should be settled into the VFL at FB or FF all season, not moved around all over the place.
Then if needed, he plays that exact position at AFL.

Again, I dont rate him, but the chopping and changing for these blokes must make it hard.

I've mentioned this interview a few times, but Leppa recently said in reference to Collingwood trading for McStay that the competition is lacking in key position forwards. So, when someone pops up, you tend to have to throw more than decent money at them. He said there is only really a dozen in the competition with 18 teams.
Sounds like most teams are in the same boat, all looking for a key forward to draft but the talent is just not out there.
