If Australia bowl India out early and than make 200 they would still need over 300 to win. They would definitely try and chase it down. The more runs we set the less likely they will try and win the game. They don't have to win their the ones holding the trophy. I would think 350-360 is about where it needs to be at for us to get a genuine contest with both sides trying to win.
Assuming we bowl them out quickly, that would mean making around 240. That’s about two sessions of batting, maybe a little more. Four sessions to make 350 is way too gettable on this deck IMO, we don’t want to take the risk it stays as a road. I reckon we set 400+ minimum. Batting them out of it wouldn’t be the worst tactic, they have quite a few aggressive bats (Jaiswal, Rohit, Pant, Jadeja, Reddy) that would struggle with just batting to save it. As long as we give ourselves the opportunity to take a couple of wickets tonight.

I agree, there is no way we set less than 400. I think the goal will be an hour tonght and a full day tomorrow if we can get the runs in time.

Yesterday cost us our best chance of winning.

Sounds silly, but our best chance of winning is if we get bowled out

If we bat well in the 2nd innings I can see us being cautious with our declaration, worried that India do the same

Collapse for 160 we win!
Cruise to 5/250 we draw

Reddy has soaked up 30 overs on his own irrespective of how many runs he has scored.
Jadeja’s career strike rate is only 55 and he literally batted them to a draw in the last test.
Pant and Jaiswal yes they’re not noted for their patience as such but Jaiswal has played long innings already. Pant it wouldn’t matter what he’s trying to do at the moment he would try something stupid so agreed there.

Sharma’s biggest concern is lasting 20 balls no matter what way he’s trying to play at the moment.

I’ve been fairly easy on the selectors up til this point, but once again we are a bowler down at a key point in the match. Starcs niggle, and the fact that he averages over 40 in 4th tests is something we should have seen coming. The Indian bats played well, but there are few teams in the world that are going to fair well with only 2 quicks available. Marsh has also shown that fit to bowl or not, he isn’t good enough to do more than act as a quick change up to swap bowlers ends.

Having said all that, the match is in a fascinating spot. Australia still ahead, but they really need all their bowlers firing you feel to get a win here.

Sharma has been horrendous for way too long
Total of 154 runs in his last 14 innings
Surely something has to give if he fails in the second innings.

Its a fair bit more than 2 sessions on a Day 4 deck.

And I doubt India will rush when they bowl. Unless we start shitting the bed.

It’s a longer day today as well. An hour plus a session should be enough to roll them. If the pitch stays a road it was always going to be a draw anyway. I reckon it will start to deteriorate, Matt Page has prepared consistently good wickets since taking over.

Going to need to bat real well today to be a chance of winning this. I don't think the pitch is deteriotating enough for us to be confident in giving them a day to chase down 400. Starc being injured only hurts that potential. Marsh not bowling anything of value and Lyon looking largely inefective .

No one here in Melbourne had any idea it was starting early today.

We hung around till about 6pm last night, and not a single mention or announcement.

The true fans, the ones that actually turn up to Tests, are treated like absolute shit.

That's exemplified by the absolute lack of replays shown on the big screen.
Go to NZ, SA, England and even India, and you are effectively shown the actual tv coverage, including close calls, non-DRS hawkeyes etc.

But here you are given nothing. Any close call that's not sent for review is simply not shown, presumably to not 'incite' the crowd.

Over the 3 days in Adelaide, they accidently once started showing the DRS of a non-review, and immediately blanked it out.

I'm sure the time was filled with earbursting ads and bland music though, so there's the entertainment to make it up.
