Case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. If he declared and we lost by 2wickets they'll ask why he declared. That type of declaration is for a 5th Test where there no more Tests..
Just like he was criticised for Declaring 9 down in that Windies loss at the Gabba. Theres no win, win situation.

I’d be very disappointed if the Aussies didn’t declare at their current total. 333 is a good lead, and we’ll need every over tomorrow to get them out. Yes, it opens up the possibility that India gets the runs, but so be it.

Australia are in the position of needing to win at least 1 more test. And we certainly can’t rely on getting 5 uninterrupted days play up in Sydney.

100 %. I'd go for the win now since Sydney may rain.
But the problem with that is we needed to replace starc with richardson/Abbott and replace Marsh with anyone to be able to go for it tomorrow. Stupid selectors

Cummins will get absolutely murdered in the papers if they hold on for a draw

We need to win the series to get the trophy and giving India a chance to win is actually not in our interest. If it was the last test 1-1 you give them a smaller target but not when it’s the 2nd last test. We need a draw or a win. Losing isn’t an option with one more test to play.

Yes I know that

I just would’ve preferred as bowling tonight and have them 2 down chasing 300 plus

Yes it’s nice Lyon and boland made 50 odd runs and it’s great to watch but in reality our top order was pathetic again and should be putting the score on the board .. that’s the issue for me
Yep. First class batting in Oz hasn’t been f••••• by the fried chicken bash festival. Much.

Has he had a period where he was that? He had his purple patch with the bat last summer and in the preceding Ashes, which given the lack of First Class form to pick from made him the default choice to start this series. Prior to that a few sporadic innings with the bat, and mostly serviceable but not often much more with the ball (don't get me wrong, serviceable is more than enough with the ball, batting is much more important for someone in the top six - I'm no fan of picking a no-rounder because you8 want an all-rounder).
Needs big runs, and to not rely on luck doing it, in the second innings imo. But he will be picked for Sydney regardless.
My apologies. I do think that I made a clear mistake when I described him as previously being a damaging all-rounder. I was overlyvgenerous with that description. Yes; he has occasionally been damaging with his batting contributions - although those are increasingly rare as shown in the current series against India - but his bowling is no longer - if it ever was - at a level that would produce a few wickets here & there as well as providing the front-line bowlers with a real rest during the game. On Saturday his pace hovered between 122 & 126 kilometres per hour & never looked like he would trouble any of the Indian batsmen. I would suggest that Webster - in the absence of Cameron Green - would be a much more effective member of the team at present & in turn going into the Sydney Test.

Come back out and bat tomorrow and really try to drive the screws in.
And Gaz deserves the chance to get to 50. Would have to be right up there, for most runs made without one.

Who the f**k cares about lyons batting average? We need to win the series and we need maximum overs to do it.

I can't be bothered scrolling back through the forum, but what did Cummins do wrong?

For a large part of today, it looked like India would be chasing 230 and the series was likely over.

There was no need to panic today and declare like this is a must win game.

The reality is it is if Sydney rains like it has in previous years

Sydney test will be a non result as it will rain for 3 of the 5 days as usual if not more.

Win it here boys. NSW is ****ed this time of year and when was the last time a test was not rain affected in this shit hole state?

No, we need to declare overnight to give us maximum overs for a win.

India are unlikely to chase down the runs @ 3.5 per over.

We are not behind, the series is 1-1.

And drawing will help us more than losing will.

Not if Sydney rains because it means India are odds on to draw and retain the trophy then. Tomorrow may be our only chance.

Boland has Gillespie written all over him with his batting. Just a wall.
Rightly so.

Hopefully the papers get the reason right though if it does happen.
Remember, Starc is suspect with his fitness and has struggled this game because of it. We needed to make sure we had plenty, even if it's a draw. Can always win next Test.

yeah, would rather Gaz get a 5fa than a fifty.
plus I’m of the belief that giving them a sniff increases your chance of victory rather than having them completely shut up shop.

Patterson or McSweeney in for Marsh.

The handful of overs he bowls can be made up be Head.
I would prefer Beau Webster & especially for Sydney where his off-spin - in combination with his fast/medium pace - could prove to be more than useful. However in terms of playing on his home deck while currently being in a rich vein of batting form then Patterson would be my next choice. Goodnight & good luck.

100 %. If India's coaches are smart they will know about the Sydney rain thing which means they will tell their guys to play for a draw tomorrow unless we offer them a lower total to chase and throw the Carrot out.

If India bat out the day, it roughly 50/50 whether its a draw or an India win from here.
If they do so after losing early wickets, or have a top/middle order collapse a bit later, a draw comes into it. If they get a good start and avoid a cluster of wickets until late in the day, but still bat through, India very probably wins because they will have the run rate easily.

But batting into tomorrow wastes three overs change of innings, potentially with no runs gained.
