When they get it at half back our players just don't seem to be able to close the outlets - running power, lack of smarts/positioning or both. Hadn't seen much of Gresham previously but smart player with tricks.

overall thought Essendon played pretty well. Lots to like.

Managed actual finals intensity vs a team that’s looking like contenders for 3 quarters.

good. In the contest.

Room for improvement. Field kicking, chemistry, fitness and ability to sustain physicality.

Play off HB is just awful. Awful. Martin really needs to go back to the wing.

Swans ball movement is elite which is super effective against a weak defensive transition. Felt like we were playing with one hand tied behind our back all night factoring in the inevitable coast to coast goals. They always side step to the middle but we don't defend corridor often enough. Watch how Ross Lyon flooded the middle when St Kilda played the Pies on Thursday night. Maybe the fitness in the group isn't there yet to counter it. The physicality around the ground had them rattled for a half, almost unexpected for an Essendon side to play like that. A lot of fumbling under fatigue late in the game leaking goals

The fact that Heeney and Papley think it even warrants sh*tting on the “Essendon edge” is good news. They wouldn’t be talking about it at all if it just didn’t exist. We looked ok tonight in areas we’ve previously lacked (toughness being one). Unfortunately we must be the worst side defending transition in the league. That, and Nic Martin has had a horror start to the season. I reckon we give the saints a run next week.

So true.
100% prefer this from Heenus & Papploma having a whinge than Parker doing his “soft” jig at Shiel.

We need to double down next time!! Get really unsociable! **** Papley and **** Heeney...

Some of those comments from Sydney players suggest we got under their skin a bit.

I liked that we kept trying right to the end, that’s something we have not been good at in the past. Our midfield work was good (except on transition lmao) and it forced Sydney to respond in the second half - we didn’t have an answer to that and that’s when they got off the chain a bit in the third.

We have some genuinely damaging players at our disposal now, the next challenge is to play in a way that links them up. It’s good to see that guys like Hind who were formerly regulars in the side are now only getting games through injury and suspension.

I think Sydney showed us everything we need to be working on as a club, on and off the field.

Fought hard for 3.5 quarters. Got annihilation last 15 minutes.

Swans slicker, better skills, fitter, faster and wanted it more.

Defence and two way running terrible. But we had a few missing.

Wright will get weeks for that bump so I reckon Caddy plays next weekend in a hybrid forward role. Zach was immense.
