Obviously you weren't actually at that game because the atomsphere was electric. When Bode spun out of the pack and kicked that great goal near half time to get us 3 goals up the roof came off the Members Stand. Try to stick to factual observations where possible

I have attended every one of our preliminary finals, have you?

If you want atmosphere ask anyone that was at the MCG for the 1993 Preliminary Final. The atmosphere in the 2006 Preliminary Final would not have been in the top 10 games played by the Crows at Footy Park. No where near the Crows v Collingwood match in the last round af 1993 either. The crowd was pretty flat at the start of the 2006 preliminary final. Naturally it ramped up as the match progressed. Would anyone who has been a long time follower of the Crows say that the atmosphere in the 2006 Preliminary Final was "The Best Ever, Man".

Arrrrrrrgh!!!! Daughters first birthday party!

This will take some skill....

Your daughters Birthday is important not to your daughter but to your wife and she wont ever let you forget so just squeese in as much game time in as you can. You could always start her party at 11 and finnish before the game starts. It doesnt need to be in the afternoon.

Bad planing one year ago if you ask me.So much for looking forward.

One year ago, you sure its only one year ago.

I have only been to the 2006 and 2002 prelims. I would have to agree that the 2006 Prelim seemed pretty flat. Was sitting in the members. Perhaps the outer had a better atmosphere.

I've been to all our finals home or away except the 98 Final in Sydney. I'd have the atmosphere at the 2006 Prelim better than 97 or 98 for example although both games in 97 and 98 were just so much fun, 97 for the surprise of the win from nowhere is my favorite game ever

I agree 93 and 2002 were both amazing. The roar in the Southern stand when Collingwood won had the grandstand shaking

The atmosphere in 2006 was excellent although that 93 Collingwood round 22 game was unique and certainly louder as was the dream final and Round 1 1991 v Hawks. 2006 was exciting, just that we lost and Cousins ran us ragged as if he had a higher power. Not best ever but was still good

The previous comment regarding where you are sitting is on the money. I was sitting in level three of the great Southern Stand for the 1998 Grand Final. The whole section was Crows supporters with a section of Kangaroos Supporters on either side. The first half was pretty flat for the Crows supporters but it became louder and louder in the third quarter. At three quarter time the noise from the Crows section was deafening and although we were just in front the Kangaroos supporters were stunned into silence. I suspect that Kangaroos supporters remember the crap atmosphere of the 1998 Grand Final.

My problem with the 2006 Prelim was when the first ball was bounced being in the members stand was like watching the start of a movie. Compare this to the 1997 Grand Final when both the St Kilda and Crows fans were roaring from the first bounce. We need the crowd to be intimidating from the first bounce on Saturday.

I'm going to answer my own comment here, because I know exactly why it is done this way but it shits me anyway (AFL run finals, don't want single seats left for sale etc). BUT I wish I had the option of buying my own seat for finals, that is EXACTLY where I want to sit for every game, why can't I sit there for finals!

Need to select the orange area if you do it online and have the barcodes for the max of 8 tickets you want. You get till 11am Tuesday before you have to compete with Port Power and people wanting extra guest passes.

Anyone managed to work out what the price will be for an AAMI member?

Have hunted high and low and it doesn't seem to be published anywhere.

We'll start with the tallest and go from there.

The Ruck
Big Sam Jacobs has been awesome this year but is coming up against a genuinely good opponent in Shane Mumford (he's not fat - he's big boned). The Big Mummy has had an illness/injury interrupted season which has meant that he's basically been off the radar this year. But he is quality. A genuinely big frame, gets involved all over the ground and is coming into form at the right time. Mumford can push forward and clunk a grab too (6 goals in last 3 games). In fact, Mumford is the second biggest ruck recuiting coup in recent memory.

BT's favourite Mike Pyke is his deputy and has actually cobbled together some reasonable footy this season in Mumford's absence. The good news for us in a way is that Mumford and Pyke do spend time up forward, which gives Rutten a genuine opponent. I don't fancy Truck chasing around after Goodes or Reid (if he plays).

Jacobs and Mumford are very similar in that they rely on smarts, positioning and timing moreso that genuine spring or athleticism. Mumford probably carries a slight edge in terms of getting his knees dirty and throwing his weight around at the stoppages whereas Jacobs probably gets involved with the link up play a little more. Mumford will look to dominate the around the ground stoppages where he can use his body, but Jacobs will be looking to control the centre square.

Nothing against Pyke, but I expect him to be used sparingly in the ruck, a little up forward and - if things go to plan for Sydney - to be subbed out during the 3rd quarter allowing Mumford to ruck solo. Likewise for us, Tippett will only do brief stints in the ruck, partly to get his hands on the ball and to get him involved, but mostly to give Jacobs the odd breather. Tippett's ruck work around the ground has been ok, his centre square stuff disappointing for a bloke with a decent spring. His timing is terrible but hopefully Doc Clarke can do some fine tuning because it should be a stength of his.

Our Defence
Last time we had Henderson trailing around after Goodes until he mercifully twanged a hip flexor. You'd get long odds at Hendo playing the same role this week. Much more likely that it will be Daniel Talia who gets the all-important role. He's played predominantly as a stay-at-home defender and on the surface you'd question whether he will be able to handle the 'up and back' running ability of Goodes, but he fared well on Pavlich and deserves the chance to have a crack at their most dangerous forward. Sam Shaw's body work and strength is not yet at a level where he could handle a Goodes match up.

The worry for us is if Sam Reid plays. Talia is our best match up for Reid, but if he is standing Goodes... Reid didn't play last week but according to the Swans website is off the injury list this week. So does Rutten or Sam Shaw go to Reid? Probably depends on what happens with Heath Grundy during the week. His elbow on Podsiadly was stupid but looked pretty gentle and not really worthy of missing a final. But the tribunal have been a tad sensitive this season. There's definitely a chance he could miss, though the Swans do tend to fare reasonably well at September tribunal appearances. If Grundy is suspended then Lewis Roberts-Thompson is highly likely to return to defence.

If Grundy plays it is simple. Talia on Goodes, Rutten on LRT and Shaw takes Reid with a shuffle whenever Mumford/Pyke shift forward (Rutten taking the resting ruckman).

If Grundy doesn't play though, then LRT will probably head down back. That leaves Rutten on Reid which I don't really like. Reid is a bit more agile/elusive than big Truck who has looked particularly slow the last month or so, panicking, getting caught out of position and giving away frees. But there'd be no one else for him to play on. If things play out as I think they will, Pyke will get subbed out in the third quarter with Rutten getting subbed out microseconds after.

At ground level things are equally interesting. Ben McGlynn is their one genuine small forward and one who has given us problems in the past. Michael Doughty is 2-4 weeks from the end of his career and this will be his big task for this week. Keeping McGlynn quiet will go some distance towards getting us a win

That's about it as far as permanent small forwards go, but the Swans get goals from their midfield like no other team. Guys like O'Keefe, Jetta, Bolton, Jack, Kennedy, McVeigh... all hit the scoreboard with regularity. This is the one area on the ground that worries me more than any other going into this game.

Brodie Smith, Brent Reilly and David Mackay will have a succession of midfielders rotated through them during the game, pushing forward as part of their rotations. I can see Nathan van Berlo lending a hand and basically sitting on Ryan O'Keefe throughout the game, but our three guys are going to have to earn their stripes with some defensive action. I can't say that I'm super confident, particularly with Reilly and Mackay. Those Sydney mids are smart, rarely waste chances, are decent marks for their size, push forward to danegrous areas and keep their defenders honest.

Our Forward Line
This is where the game can be won. Our efficiency in terms of scores per F50 entry has been a welcome improvement this season after years of wastefulness.

With Walker and Tippett we have two genuine tall targets, both capable of kicking a bag. Walker has been in sublime touch lately and Kurt showed some glimpses in the last fortnight that he is getting back to form. Ted Richards is probably going to be All Australian this year but was taken to the cleaners by Walker earlier this season. Grundy will take Tippett, or LRT if Grundy is suspended. The Crows will be backing their men with any of these match ups.

Adelaide fans bemoaned our forward line entry tactics in previous years, which basically equated to "Bombs away to Tippett with no crumbers" but thankfully that glaring deficiency has been overcome. Porplyzia, Johncock, Callinan and Petrenko make up a pretty handy quartet of small forwards that will test the Sydney defence. Whether this group can hit the scoreboard and pressure the Sydney defence will be crucial. I'd expect Petrenko to sit pretty tight on Rhyce Shaw to stifle their run.

The Swans backline is more than handy though. Alex Johnson is under-rated and can play on a variety of opponents, Mattner we know is a decent defender (will probably look to get on his left foot though... and there will be at least one guaranteed brain fade) while Malceski and Shaw are experienced campaigners. Will be interesting to see if Tony Armstrong gets a run. You'd think that a little 'physical pressure' on him could make him a weak link back there. Have to expose him one on one if we can.

The Midfield
Two very similar groups in the middle of the ground and a fascinating battle. The Crows have made massive strides this year in terms of clearances and contested ball but we are coming up against the masters. Josh Kennedy leads the way and Jude Bolton and Kieran Jack are as hard as they come. Big, strong bodies and they love a scrap.

Like us, they don't have that much outside run or pace. Their one 'outlet player' in Lewis Jetta has been tagged pretty heavily in the back half of the season and hasn't handled it particularly well (as most young players wouldn't). I'd expect Matthew Wright to go straight to him from the first bounce. Their other mids are much harder to tag as they are contested ball machines.

For us we need Dangerfield and Thompson to stand up at the clearances and at least match the Swans. Where we can perhaps sneak an advantage is if Sloane, Vince and Douglas can get some footy in space and provide some quality use. I feel that Sydney's midfield are as good or slightly better in terms of the tough, hard, inside stuff but that ours is perhaps a bit better balanced.

No doubt there will be a lot of stoppages, a lot of congesttion, a lot of hurried kicks under pressure and a lot of hacking it forward any which way you can. We will need to be prepared to get into the trenches and stand up in these contested situations but I feel our chance to score a win will come down to whether we can generate enough small doses of quality/uncontested possessions around the edges. These opportunities will be few and far between (as is the case in all finals) but it is vital that we generate some chances and make it count when we do.

Craig Bird will run with either Thompson or Dangerfield. If Sloane had been in a bit better form they may have been tempted to put a lock on him but his last month has been poor. For us we'll have Wright to Jetta and van Berlo to O'Keefe. The latter is the crucial match up for mine. O'Keefe is an absolute star who would be regarded as a champion if he played for a Victorian club. His back half of the year has been outstanding and he is a proven finals performer. VB put the clamp on Ablett last week and will relish the task.

Tip
Adelaide fans have learned the hard way not to enter September with any optimism. We know now that what we see in the minor round has no bearing on what we will see this month. The Swans have been there and done it. They've had finals success. Their players know what to expect. This is the ace up their sleeve.

The biggest obstacle we have to overcome is the Craig era battle scars. Players like Doughty, Reilly, Rutten, Thompson, van Berlo and Johncock who have lived through all of our finals failures... this group MUST stand up. They must not go into their shells, get nervous, chip it backwards, be careful, fumble, go missing, panick and give away frees... all the things they have done in the past. These guys must be the ones to lead the way with calm football, good decision making, sure ball handling and MUST stand up at the most important times.

If they can do this then I think we can sneak over the line.

This is the key for me. In the past we have had a habit of letting players run around like unregistered dogs in finals. See Cousins, Harvey, Gwilt(!) etc. Blokes like O'Keefe will tear us a new one if he gets loose so VBs role in nullifying him will be ultra important.

With the definite two inclusions being walker and vince, who goes out?

clearly its out of jaensh, riley and lynch.
Most would say Jaensch and Lynch will make way, but i am concerned that we wont be tall enough, so i would prefer if lynch stayed as the sub.

Sydney Talls: Goodes, Walsh, LRT, richards, mumford, grundy, johnson, mattner
Adelaide Talls: Tippet, sauce, walker, rutten, talia, shaw

if one of our talls goes down, we are screwed!! anyway, just something that i thought about!

pumped for saturday!!

Great write-up Carl - I think Jetta is a key match-up...he's been out of sorts the last month but he's the type of player who can break open a final with a few key plays.

I actually think Brodie Smith might get Jetta (no-one can go with him for pace but Brodie's pretty sharp) whilst I reckon Matty Wright is a better match for Kieren Jack.

Hope Goodes continues his average form and it wouldn't surprise me to see the Crows put Shaw on him - he's got the blend of height, athleticism and courage to go with him which would leave Talia to take care of Reid who I expect has to play for the Swans even if he's not 100%.

Finally I hope that Callinan, Petrenko and Johncock can get their hands on the ball enough to be damaging...players of their type find it hard in big finals and we can't afford to have a couple of passengers which let's their defenders slide off them to play 3rd up against Walker and Tippett.

Huge match.

Will be in Thailand on sat. Ok i thought ill just find a bar with it on, but if turns out the wife's booked an all day tour. ******* SPEWING!
