Can someone again explain to me by we’ve decided to telegraph the decision to delist them and potentially (likely) get nothing for them? Appears to be significant interest in both players.
Because, as of next year, my guess is that we believe it's of most importance to get games into our younger players (Butts/Murray/McAsey, and Cook/Gollant/Pedlar) than to keep Talia/Lynch around like a shag on a rock

The picks that we'd get for Lynch/Talia (likely end of 2nd round picks) would have little value to us anyway, considering we're searching for top-end talent

Because they specifically asked if they would get a contract and it gives them a chance to prepare for that.

Let's be honest, Talia is a UFA, and Lynch was OOC, so we were never going to get a 1st round pick for them were we?

That's such short-sighted thinking. Even if only one of them was to gain a Band 5 compensation pick, that would be an almost start of 3rd round pick coming our way, which is almost the same in terms of points as the Melbourne 2nd rounder we've got.

Nothing to sniff at when you're looking at bundling picks to move up the order...

Wow. End of 2nd round picks 'would have little value to us anyway'

I've heard it all, thank god you're not in charge of list management!

Just doesn’t feel right. Both players devastated to be leaving the Crows, Lynch sounds particularly dejected.

Both players appear to have some trade value. I feel like the only reason to play Lynch at the moment is to increase his trade value by showcasing his abilities. Why on Earth would we be wasting a starting spot in the 22 if we knew we were going to get nothing for him?

Is it a case of List Management saving us from ourselves? We know we won't get anything for them in terms of trades, and if we have them on our list, we know our coaches will 100% pick them every week.

We'll get a FA compo for Talia either way, so it's irrelevant. If anything, it offers more time for clubs to do some research on him and negotiate an offer with his manager.

I know there's talk of bundling picks, but it's not always that easy.

There's literally NO reason to have telegraphed that we're not going to offer them a contract. If Rory Atkins can get us Band 4 (End of Round 2) compensation on $400K per season, then surely Lynch would get us Band 5 at a minimum.

Yeh I agree, I don't understand the reasoning for that part. Seems a bit odd.

Meanwhile I'm more interested in why Gollant doesn't have a new contract...

My initial thoughts were this as well but yo channel the worst weekly attempt at journalism-

If: We got a 2nd rounder for a 26 year old club champion.
Then: We wouldn't have gotten anything valuable for 2 injury riddled 30 year old's.

look, I don't begrudge both Daniel and Tom the best chance to move to another club I really don't. But on the flipside to that, you should remember not to hold on to too much hope when it comes to letting free agents go after last year when it comes to compensation - we acted literally like a charity last year rather than an operating footy club when it came to how we played the Brad Crouch hand

Why is that?

Picks around the 40 mark are hardly great trade up chips and you need to have list spots if we were to use them.
Their only real value is trade chips for clubs that need points for their NGA or F/S players which might land us picks in next year's draft....maybe.

Its more the old saying that something is better than nothing and you can always look to trade them out or into next year for what you can get for them if you are not likely to use them

I'm glad people sound devastated to leave us, and not wanting out at the first opportunity.

As to why we're playing Lynch, we have form with this kind of short term thinking. We played Douglas multiple times when we retired him. Couldn't wait to get Jacobs back despite knowing we're delisting him etc. When it comes to our matchday thinking, our selections are always about winning next week, the future be damned.

Talia and Lynch do not have trade value due to their status as free agents. We also don't forfeit our right to compensation for either player (seeing we can delist either after the trade/FA period) and of course, you never know if a player publically being available sparks a bidding war. The likelihood though we're just being upfront to two players who have given it all for the club and we're ready to move on from. Saving them from running through the wringer of media asking if he's staying or not, and gives them as much of a chance as possible to find a new home.

Why haven't we announced Mackay is not getting another contract yet?

Nothing about Gollant yet either.

We usually don't finalise our list until after the season. I suspect we won't find out about Gollant, Parnell and Mackay until then. Gollant and Parnell due to there being no rush to resign either, as they're long term prospects from low draft picks, who have yet to break through to the main side (i.e. their value is effectively 0) and Mackay because the only way he's staying on as an AFL player is holding on for as long as possible.

Calm the farm, Gollant ain't going anywhere unless it's to a better offer back home and that's extremely unlikely.

Season hasn't ended yet. I'd expect Gollant to be extended in September/October

The only one I'd be worried about in that regard is DMac, surely *if* we're getting rid of him we'd be giving him the pleasure of a 'farewell game' after 246 games worth of service

I wouldn't go quite that far, I think both have already shown enough to suggest a club might fancy going after them instead of using a late pick in the draft on a kid with less exposed form.

Remember early in the yeat Parnell was absolutely lighting up the NAB League against all the Victorian kids in this draft.

Is it confirmed that Parnell only is on a half-year contract?

I'm surprised we didn't try to sign him up for a bit longer as soon as possible, in that case (although by the sounds of things he's gonna sign on anyway)

I take it that's the case going on the 1st video.
