So even with the afl implementing the bye to avoid resting players isn't really working all that well because Adelaide may as well have left out half their squad

No matter what the AFL does would not avoid this. Adelaide has nothing to play for as they are already first and remaining first regardless of the result. It would make sense to play bruise free footy.. why would they risk injuries on a dead rubber game to them.
