Flag favourites just scrape over the line, after a big lead, with some of the most favourable umpiring they are ever likely to get.

Honest Pies fans would probably realise that Bombers are likely to worry them in finals.

A sigh of relief would have escaped from Collingwood fans after leaving the G.

Deep down they know they got out of jail.

Pies were their own worst enemy. If they were more accurate at shots at goal would not have been as close as it was, umpire decisions or not. We're not playing our best football, prob the worst we have played since the dogs game.
Essendon showing good signs for the rest of the season though. We held on and scraped through with the win, against the pressure.

the dogs game was only 2 weeks ago :moustache:

We kicked 2.10 from set shots. Not worried. Umpiring didn’t directly give collingwood a goal, essendon got 2-3 from them. Two absolutely questionable ones as well. Not sure what all the noise about favourable umpiring is.. was poor both ways the whole game

Class prevailed in the end, game should've been over at qtr time but we took our foot off the pedal and it almost cost us dearly, do it against a genuine contender and we won't be so lucky, should be a good wake up call for us.

Horrible umpiring caused the booing... .

umpires missed some serious holding the ball decisions for Essendon and then somehow pulled out free kicks for Collingwood.

Still Essendon can only blame themselves for losing....Pies deserved to win, so well done to them.

Well done Essendon fans for the booing... umpiring this year is a joke.

I think my favorite part of the whole thing is pies fans who were adamant last season that higgins goty was a throw are now saying 'nah stephenson threw it and got the tiniest bit of boot to the ball so that's fine'

LOL

The hint is in the name ‘Prior’ is before being tackled.

Stephenson was almost being held before he took possession of the ball, he had no prior opportunity at all to dispose of the ball before being tackled.

Thus all he has to do is attempt to dispose of it...he did try to get it on his boot when lying on the ground.

And as per 15.2.4(e) if pulled down by one arm without prior opportunity and the ball spills free it is play on

So if the umpire thought he tried to get ball to boot = play on

If umpire thought the tackle itself knocked the ball free = play on

The only way that could be adjudged ‘holding the ball’ is if he didn’t think Stephenson even attempted to correctly dispose of the ball.

Play on 9 times out of 10
someone needs to tell the umpires then because 9 times out of 10 if someone has an arm free and an arm held they will penalise them.

Tell me, if a player received the ball and was tackled around the waste immediately, but had their hands free to handball, would they be penalised if they just held the ball? Of course they would. Having an option to dispose of the ball when tackled is just as important as prior opportunity, which is primarily used if a player is tackled and has no opportunity to dispose of the ball. Their opportunity to dispose of the ball was prior to the tackle, not during it.

Mate you guys were r*ped yesterday , I hate your club but, I hate cheating and that is exactly what happened yesterday , you guys were cheated out of a win.

What happened to Australia’s fair play, AFL has an agenda

Yeah if they don’t attempt to dispose of the ball that is holding the ball.

You are just making things up that are wrong.

Prior opportunity before the tackle is THE important thing. If you have had prior opportunity and are correctly tackled you must correctly dispose of the ball.

If you haven’t had prior opportunity, ie Stephenson who was tackled immediately, all he has to do is attempt to get rid of it, which he did.

Play on the correct call.

Especially with Fantasia back in the mix.

An honest Person would also say bombers were gifted three goals from frees which were highly dubious also.

Yeah if they don’t attempt to dispose of the ball that is holding the ball.

An opportunity to dispose of the ball is the relevant thing. This opportunity can be prior to the tackle or once tackled. If the tackle locks the ball in and the players cannot dispose of the ball once tackled they can be penalised if they had a chance to dispose of the ball prior to the tackle. OR their opportunity to dispose of the ball can be after they are tackled if the player has an option eg: hand or hands free.

You're making out like I'm the only person who thinks it was incorrect disposal.
