You cant emphasise enough how huge the loss of Ryder is tonight

Last week he played a tremendous game - and it was really good to watch - a classic tap ruckman ( who actually knew what he was doing ) because there have been so few of those

Years ago Clarke of Adelaide was very good - big spring - and palm the ball to his midfielder

In the last 20 years - at Geel - the best qtr of ruckwork ( and that includes Ottens Blake and all the rest of them ) was believe or not Orren Stephenson - against Haw ( the Hawkins after the siren game ) . In the 1st qtr - at the centre bounce - with a big jump/leap he kept palming the ball down a Geel midfielders throat - and the proof - at qtr time the Cats led 9 goals to 2

Ryder tonight was the Saints big trump card - at the centre bounce he could have given silver service - to the Saints midfielders - so the ball/clearances was going StKildas way

But he is not playing - he is a huge out

That makes sense as we lost to your side by four points, beat Richmond by five goals as well as Port in Adelaide by five goals. We are underdogs sure with our outs but far out if you think Richmond walk this in, you are dreaming.
No insult intended VR, I was surprised when we beat the Tigers in the QF, love to see the Saints knock them out of it, would be a fantastic win if the Saints manage it against an excellent Richmond side still in with a chance of winning 3 of 4 premierships and join the GOAT sides like Lions 01-03, Hawks 13-15 and Cats 07-11.

I agree - it does even the playing field on the ruck front - with him in it would be one way traffic from the centre. I hate seeing good players get injured but him out is a massive bonus for the Tiges. If there is one player who you would take out of their side it would be him.

Carlisle also played a good game for the saints last week - I thought his best days were well behind him but him being out changes the structure of their side and they now look very vulnerable in defence. He will be missed even more now that Lynch is back in. Massive respect to him for his decision. I respected the Tigers players doing the same thing earlier in the year but not sure I'd be as happy if they did that during finals!

How many Lions fans are going to cheer on the Saints?

Isn’t Paton more of a small defender whereas Webster is a half back flanker?

Our backline is pretty much all new on the last two seasons.

With Webster 188cm traditional he would play on both smalls and mediums, and the occasional tallish player. Geary would normally take the best small forward, and if there was a second Webster might take him. Webster is a hard as nails type player.

Paton has in essence squeeze out Geary who mainly plays as a defensive forward now. Paton 187 cm is 4cm taller, a lot quicker anda much better kick than Geary. Geary is hard as nails, very good defensively, elite distance wise, but slow and an average to poor kick.

Best backline has changed from

Geary Brown Webster
Roberton Carlisle Savage

to

Paton Howard Wilkie
Coffield Carlisle Long/Clark
(and for tonight game Battle to replace Carlisle. Battle was CHB for most of last season replacing the injured Carlisle).

Backline is now much quicker (Carlisle is the only slow player) , and everyone is good offensively. Previously Brown and Geary were poor offensively and while Webster and Savage are both huge kicks, they did tend to roost somewhat.

Good summary, and good point about the speed of our new look back line. It's become a weapon for rebound attack.

15 point margin probably flattered Richmond to be fair, Lions missed some easy shots in the end of the 3rd quarter which could have easily blown out in the last quarter.
we hit the post twice, gave away 2 x 50mtr penalties and they were gifted 2 x 50 mtr penalties, we had so many players down that day and only just lost.
If we meet brissy again and play our normal game we will win by a lot.

Ratten is 10-1 v Richmond, having won the last 10

Richmond is 11-1-1 from their last 13 semi-finals

Hardwick is 8-1 when 1.86+ older than the opposition; only defeat v St.Kilda

Ratten 7-20 @ -1.86 or worse

Yep Ryder is a massive out. With Soldo out and our ruck stocks vulnerable that was an area the Saints could have won.

I expect us to win, but if we are not switched on and Saints get a lead early it's absolutely game on. It's proven extremely difficult to come from behind this year so I want to see us put a few goals on early.

Wonder if Richmond will change up their strategy for this game. Got smashed out of the middle after 1/4 time and couldn't cope with the pressure.

Saints will come out breathing fire and have nothing to lose. Richmond's game to lose honestly, if there ever was a time that they would beat Saints, it's this weekend with a few injuries affecting them.

Got smashed out of the middle? Pretty sure we won centre clearances there pal !! Cannot wait to shut Brissy up Lunchhhie

came in to read about the anticipation of the game tonight, instead, find posters slagging off teams of the past and Brisbane still taunting Richmond fans

closing thread............

Go Saints

With the how the H&A was going, and the ins/outs, you'd think Richmond would be clear favorites, but the Saints seem to match up pretty well with us, so the nerves are definitely in place.

Tip: Richmond, but without much confidence.
