lets extend things a little more than that... they are notorious for beating up teams down the bottom and sides here and there around middle of the pack, then get beaten by the top sides.

This doesn’t apply to either side? Saints barely beat North & Eagles last year and lost to Hawthorn. Dogs lost to Hawthorn & Eagles.

Both sides have good & bad aspects and haven’t quite put it together. Both have key areas of youth. Neither coach/club is under any delusions I’d say.

Feel for Saints supporters in that regard. Most clubs get sucked into chasing their golden eras at some point.

St Kilda might be the first trying to recreate their glory years where they didn't actually win anything.
Jeez that's sad. Poor buggers - perennial losers :'(

The only real talking point to come out of this game is Naughton’s form.

Everything else is clearly just another “a week is a long time”. Last week Bevo on chopping block and Saints nearly stole a win against the league leaders, this week Dogs are back and Saints are back to no man’s land.
I’m sure if Essendon don’t lose tomorrow their next loss will have people convinced they are rubbish.

Give it 2-6 weeks and the Dogs will have a bad loss & the Saints will have a good win and it’ll be flipped again.

He was the last decent coach they'd had, so it was of some comfort to look back to what you know. I occassionally seek comfort in nostalgia, it's a powerful illusion. A courageous decision would have been taking the Pies route, hire a younger well tutored bloke, tactically uptodate and with a fresh vision and plenty of gusto.

That’s all they have though
All the more reason to keep trying something new. It's gotta work eventually.

Collingwood's the perfect example. Imagine if they took Ross over McRae?

They need to look for the next Craig McRae, or Chris Scott, or Adam Kingsley.

It's not going to be easy, but it seems that everybody but St Kilda can do it.

We know what doesn't work, and that's retreads. Blight is probably the only won who's had any success following that model.
