Nick Riewoldt made a good point after the game re: frees. The team who wins the contested ball generally wins more frees, being first to the ball and all that. Essendon won contested ball 143-127. Lost the free kick count 33-17.

Contested possessions: Melbourne 1st
Free kicks: Melbourne 10th

Nick Riewoldt is just another dumb blonde.

I dont subscribe to the theory about the umpires.
Where in the rule book does it say that frees need to be equal?
If the frees are there the umpires job is to pay them.

The fact that needs to be discussed is that if the frees where there to give and what ones they missed?

The free kick total dosnt need to be equal.
Anyone that thinks that is just a sook that cant cope with losing.

You're 100% correct, in a given game the free count doesn't have to be equal, nor should it necessarily be.

The thing is, and it seems to finally clicking with people including last nights commentators, that the long term trend, year on year, is that WC receive an advantage in Perth that goes well beyond the expected and average home ground advantage for all other teams. Individual free counts in individual games mean very little, granted, long term measurable trends measured by stats are far more telling, and they tell the tale that WC have been getting an inexplicable (if you rule out blatant cheating by the likes of Margetts) dream run for years.

If you watch the game, a lot of free-kicks were being called in the eagles forward half of the ground, the play kept stopping because of free kicks. Nothing to do with leg speed or fitness, if you paid attention.

Umps activated second quarter. Started paying more free kicks to ensure a world record number. The first quarter was umpired the right way, evenly and allowing the game to flow. Second quarter-on the umpiring had the biggest influence on the game.

Bombers won the contested possession count 143-127, lost the free kick count 33-17. Ludicrous.

Not the full picture as it doesn’t count non-calls but gives you a good feel as to the trends.

Yep that was frustrating to watch. Shambolic forward line :(

Ryan was shocking. He has to realize that bringing the ball to ground is more important than trying to take mark of the year every single time. A part of me is starting to think a forward line with Ryan and Roili in may not work.

Yep.. a lot is said about NN marking but he is in decent marking form in reality. Give him some space and a 1v1 and crumb off him. Not jump on him over and over

I paid attention alright, and I know what I saw.

I acknowledge the poor umpiring, but you need to acknowledge that the bombres run and gun basically stopped also. They weren't related.

Of course they were related. West Coast did well to clog up the middle after quarter time to help restrict Bombers run & attack through there. That combined with the umps basically locking the ball in West Coast forward half for extended periods resulted in the slow down. The Bombers also took it upon themselves at times to slow down the play when options weren't there, was smart play.

WC won the inside 50's 59-45 and got beat after scoring 6-16 with their two best forwards out. I am shocked.

Let’s just ignore the fact that their last three goals were in garbage time. Or that our best forward was out as well. I’m shocked

Or the clear mark to McKernan being paid. Or the clear touch by Hooker called as a goal not once, but twice. Or the Shuey in the back against Walla, but gets paid to Shuey seconds later. Or the repeat entries the umps provided for West Coast. Nice forward press.

It was probably the worst one-sided umpiring for the year.

No, you’re wrong. There is No ‘probably’ about it, it was the worst one-sided umpiring for the year. It would be great if someone could go through and do a count of obvious mistakes, not 50 50 decisions.

Jeez, when you have a Hawks fan agreeing with us you know it’s bad.

I haven't seen more one sided umpiring in an Essendon match for a very long time. AFL are kidding themselves if they think it isn't a problem.

Expect Dees fans feel the same way after Q4 last night...

I think as fans we ask for 3 things to ensure umpiring doesn't impact the game:

1. pay the obvious frees
2. be consistent with the 50/50 decisions
3. have the 50/50 decisions balance out over the game

The west coast umpires failed to do all 3 in the game For example some of the absolute howlers: McKernan missed mark, Hooker stuffed up goal review, Green face slap, Hurley oof, McKenna oof

Some obvious inconsistency: Nic nats holding the ball free, McKernan dangerous tackle, McGov/Shuey/Walla push in the backs

FYI: I think the hooker missed block and 50 is reasonable, that gets missed all the time. Shouldn't have ran through the mark.

The Devon 50 is ****ed though, how can he throw it to the right player if the umpire doesn't tell him who it is?
