AFL Round 18 Sydney Swans V Geelong

Yesterdays mauling of the swan's from the demon's would'nt have been good for us, while our playing group & match committee will look through that and concentrate on there strengths; no doubt we will expect a 'bloods' side looking for respect!!!!

Should be a good game. Sydney coming off a demoralizing loss against Melbourne and are playing for a spot in the finals whilst Geelong are clicking into gear in time for September after a magnificant performance against the Lions.

Does anyone know the condition of the surface? Geelong played there in Round 18 2008, won by 39 points however the surface wasn't up to scratch and quite a few of the players were carrying niggles into the finals series as a result from that game. I remember Mark Thompson was openly critical of its surface. Any thoughts?

Hmmm. Geelong always seem to get teams on the rebound :(

Heading up for this one, my first visit to ANZ Stadium since the Olympic Games.

Thought Podsiadly may have had a rest for Hawkins, however apparently Hawkins was barely sighted in the VFL win.

Was at the Sydney game yesterday and they were obliterated. To concede 20 goals before three-quarter time to a bunch of Melbourne kids was very unexpected.

Not sure why Pods is playing this week, he seemed to be "generally sore". I'm not surprised Hawkins isn't playing, he'll have another week off then will be back I'm sure.

Don't think you guys should read too much into that game against Melbourne - just an off day. I think it should be similar to the game earlier in rd... something, tight contested for a few qtrs then Geelong blow Sydney out of with their class. Should be an easy win in the end for you guys.

PS Their was an NRL Game played last friday - ground should be decent - No game till the sunday after Geelong VS Sydney.

Thanks for the info on the grounds. Sydney are a strong team, it was an off day, every team has them. Looking forward to it.

Ditto ;) love the way geelong go about it.

Yeah I don't think many people saw that result coming.

Certainly don't think it'll be a walkover; however I do think if we can play four solid quarters of football we'll be too strong. Of course we thought that against Adelaide too, and their form was put into perspective by Port Adelaide yesterday.

I would be absolutely gobsmacked if Pods isn't rested this week...
Could Ben Johnson be a wild card KPF call up this week?

I'll go early:

Out: Podsiadly, Blake, Enright (General Soreness)
In: B. Johnson, Hogan, Hawkins

I wouldn't bring Hawkins in as a replacement for Blake with his foot injury. If he does it again, he'll be out for the rest of the year at least. If Blake was to get a rest, I'd bring West in.

Agree with your other two changes though.

Ben Johnson is insurance if Hawkins, Pods and Mooney all go down. I very much doubt he will be even thought about at the selection table this year.

I would rest Pods (if required) and give Hawkins a go. You can't die wondering whether he is ready for senior action.

Byrnes to come in possibly for Enright (again if he requires a week off). We have enough players to cover him.

That is all.

Oops...forgot about Byrnes. He'll come in for sure.
Sorry Simon! Back to the magoos...

On reflection too...isn't ANZ a notoriously hard surface?
Bearing that in mind....no Hawkins.

So: MKII

Out: Podsiadly, Enright
In: B. Johnson, Byrnes (I just reckon Johnson may get rewarded for good form)

Pods spot isn't a lock for the finals. He failure to step up in the big games is worrying. I think he may just get rested (Pods) this week.

Agreed. He either has to rest and come back in a blaze of glory, or the decision on tall forwards/rucks just got a whole lot easier.
Pods hasn't been bad, but he looks absolutely stuffed after every contest atm.
I still believe if he plays to potential he should be our FF/CHF. He's the best mark we have and even on Saturday his ground work was good.

I would like Hawkins to play another week in the VFL. Injured, young, whatever - he needs a kick up the ass.

The surface at ANZ will be slippery, just like AAMI Stadium a couple of weeks ago...and we all know what happened there!

BJ (ha) has been kicking bags in the VFL, though. I think you're right that he will only get a game on the back of injuries but surely the match committee has to ask the question at some point - if Pods can, why not Johnson?
