Autopsy AFL Round 19 - Another Loss

Of course we are all still hurt from the Prelim last year. Wouldn't be a proper fan if we weren't. Can you tell me you're not still hurt after last year's Grannie or are you over it by now??
However we learnt from our mistakes last year as Benny Gale has already said that we went too hard too early last year and faded at the end (our 2nd half of the season was pretty ordinary). It seems that Collingwood has a similar problem this year as a few of your guys look gassed already.
we do look tired, not sure if it's going to hard to early or players playing sore/injuries or who knows..

honestly i have moved on, the first game against west coast in round 3 it was obviously fresh in my mind but when we played them a few weeks ago it was to me just a game where we had to win, didnt think of the granny just thought of how much we needed the win.

Beams has needed to take some time away for personal issues and it will help him. He loves footy and will relish playing again when he’s back. He’s a competitor.
Regarding the rest of your post, all I ever see is a tight group. They will be aware of Stevo, form, confidence, injuries etc but I don’t believe it would be affecting them. They will stick at it until our luck turns.
They're not playing like a tight group.

I've had a busy morning. I've had to post on 200 "post loss - the world is coming to an end" threads. Suffice to say, I'm using a lot of cut and pasting. I generally state the obvious.... bucks is past his use-by date..... cox experiment is over.... what have i done to deserve this?.... the usual stuff.

p.s. Mick Malthouse on sportstalk in WA has just said that he's willing to fly over and take over the reins to make sure we win next week.
You haven't had too.

o_Owoah that sounds bitchy

Taht's possible but don't really ahve to go past injuries explanation. then again injuries could be caused by pushing players too hard.

Actually it isn’t delusional.
Optimistic perhaps.

We lost the qualifying final last year & had to play every week in the finals.
We will need to do the same but from 5-8 positions instead this year. It would just mean we play an elimination final & not a qualifying final. Win that & we are in the same position as last year. Playing a cut throat semi final in week 2.
We may get Moore, Greenwood, Adams, Stephenson & Sier back for the finals.
The other end of the spectrum is that we wont have Beams, Langdon, Wells, Reid or Dunn available. Probably wont have Aish either. We are also a near certainty with our track record to have another 3 or 4 soft tissue injuries at least before then. We are more than likely just going to be an also ran in 2019. I’ve accepted that & anything we do achieve is a bonus in my book.

First thing we must do post season is get to the bottom of the constant soft tissue injuries & find a solution.
If that means trading or delisting some less durable guys then so be it. We must look at the surface we train on.
We must look at how we train & we must look at how we rehab the players from soft tissue injuries. Because we are failing badly here.
How much does it cost to completely resurface a training ground? I imagine very affordable at this level of sport and maybe cheaper than relocating. Get it thoroughly tested, get it done! In fact make it extra soft within reason! AFAIK you can jsut top dress an entire field witn carefully selected soil in teh off season and let it gow through, or put new turf on top of said top dressing. Top dressing should be cheap, not sure about the turf.
Could also look at special training boots that have excellent shock absorption, that could be a much cheaper effective option. There's special ultra shock absorbing inner soles, they are quite expensive maybe even $50/pair or more but that's nothing at that level. And make it a serious offense to not wear them to training.

You'll overtake our percentage next week and we have TWO fifty fifty games left whereas you have ONE.

You guys might have me barracking for Essendon in last game of the year. Ill need to shower afterwards of course.

You guys are safe mate.......last night showed that.

Hopefully we finish fifth and then finals is another season.

Well played.

Expectation is the big difference. You guys were flag favourites entering 2018 and for much of the year. Entering 2018 we were optimistic about playing finals, but it wasn't expected, let alone finishing top 4, making a grand final or narrowly missing out.

Getting so close was tough, but it wasn't bitter. That lack of bitterness is helped by the majority of West Coast and Collingwood fans being gracious and appreciating it was a great game with either side a deserving victor.

Ok.. moore v rance.. not even a competition. One guy has played about 10 good games the other is a superstar.

Their youth is also pretty scary as they are not really an old team.
yeah youth comign through at collingwood has been disappointing this year. Hipefully some of them do reach teh level eventually, pretty sure Quaynor will.

Exactly. We are missing at least 4 maybe 5 players critical to our structure.
Its more than injuries.

I think that confidence and belief wills you across the line in the last quarter of close games. If you go with that thinking, our style of footy has only outplayed the opposition 3 times this year - Brisbane, Richmond and Port. The other wins were us simply out believing and out willing the opposition in the last quarter., because we thought we were good, but we haven't been all year.

Saw the interview with JDG on 7.
Highly impressive. A superstar.
Collingwood should win the next four, Crows inconsistent.
Round 23 should be a cracker.
We’d need to improve a hell of a lot to pull the next 4 games off, too many passengers, & injuries too key personnel. JDG will be captain one day.

Still disagree even with your chosen four.
Games this year.
Chol (6), Soldo (8), Stack (16), Bolton (12) compare to our bottom four Crocker (3), Daicos (3), IQ (4) and Varcoe (12), none of which would get a regular game if we had other options. Form and continuity is the key.

You do realise that I'm not disagreeing with you on this point.. in fact in my original post, I highlighted that half the guys we sent out last night aren't really AFL quality and that I was not surprised that we were beaten pretty comfortably.

The only thing we seem to disagree on is whether or not Richmond are a good side.

As you mentioned, you never get over the hurt of a loss in a final, prelims and of course a GF linger for seasons until you can hopefully get the opportunity to redeem yourself and go one better.

A lack confidence and belief is intrinsically linked to injuries. AFL360 highlighted Collingwood has rotated something like 22 players through 8 positions the last few weeks. There is no continuity and cohesion with that many changes week to week. I can’t believe how many light weight Pies supporters on this forum are abusing our players and club without taking this into account. Look no further than Richmond for evidence of this. As they regained players and had a settled side week to week, their cohesion, belief, confidence and results have improved.

I think the jury is still out in regards to the tigers. Problem is, you don’t need to be a ‘great’ team this year. Just a good team with a healthy list and form at the pointy end of the season is probably enough. No team is starring in 2019. It’s another open year.

Intent/effort & overall workrate.

No matter who you put out on the park, things like that are absolute staples - the fact we continue to come out not 'breathing fire' after being flogged regularly is stark.
If we didn’t show the intent/effort and overall work rate last night, the margin would have been 20 goals. It’s lack of confidence and cohesion the leads to poor decisions and errors and that’s a direct consequence of missing critical players and wholesale changes the last few weeks.
You can’t tell me, if you were to pick our best22 or near to it that we wouldn’t be a completely different team.

Difference between Richmond last year and us this year is we have injuries and you had none last year. But nice try trying to compare the 2 years. Players are gassed because they’ve had to carry the team while constantly having half the team out injured.

Oh and for the love of god can someone down at the club teach Grundy how to kick at goal. His whole goal kicking action is deplorable.
Bent knee, bent foot, high ball drop, not kicking though it and unsteady approach no wonder he cant buy a goal when inside 35m even with a fistfull of 100s.

He's missed some absolute sodas this year after winning frees inside 50...what's worse is the scrub Voldo got a similar one and never looked like missing.
He shouldn't even be kicking our goals if we had a functional forward line structure
