Autopsy AFL Round 19 - Another Loss

Maybe it's delusional hope, but Moore is a similar body type to an Aussie fast bowler, who seem to have a heap of injuries until they become durable in their mid 20s.
Its not the worst comparison, but Cummins had back issues stemming from his under-age days. They changed his action over the course of 4-5 years and he's now where he is today.

Moore started suffering what appears to be chronic hamstring issues once he came into the system. Its certainly a cause for major concern & we can't afford to continue to subsidize that problem. Its too costly to have these guys missing, especially if he wants a juicy contract.

I just think that over the next 2 years he should be used as a back flanker or a swingman. Don't make him a key part of the structure or plan until he shows durability.

Didn't watch much of the game, but wasn't too surprised with how it turned out.
Nothing much really to add - one side had a better list than the other.
Let the Richmond fans be happy just for this night, they dont have much else happening in their lives
This is essentially it. We would have liked to have done better but we were up against it. Our endeavour was there and the Pies played the game out. We were missing 4 or 5 players who are critical to our structure and lost Roughy early.

Pending injuries

Finals is another competition, whilst we got beat in the first half, we beat them in the second half with what we all agree is a side lacking pressure, execution of the ball, confidence and 8-10 first choice players

We beat WCE over there, smashed Port, Richmond ( when they didn’t have injuries) Sydney over there, Lions over there, should have smashed the Cats, Essendon and Bulldogs twice. Yes we are sadly out of form but if we can get half of the 8-10 back by finals, it becomes quite a different ball game !

Good post, well researched. I'm a believer, though I don't know that the surface is necessarily the culprit for the mass crippling of our nucleus of stars.
But then again, WC and Freo seem pretty certain that the surfaces they play and train on is the culprit for their lower leg injuries. Perhaps it’s something to look at for us.

Damning loss, we were slaughtered early when it mattered most and never recovered, was frustrated by the fact that quite a few of our guys -who saw virtually none of the ball all game- picked up some cheap stats when Richmond had clearly taken their foot off the gas in the last.

Surely giving Tyler Brown his first game would have been a better option than sticking with Barry Shocker, we've all seen enough there to know what we are getting and what we are getting is nowhere near up to it.

Elliot is in horrible form, looks a shadow of the player we know, one wonders what is wrong with him, same for Thomas, thought he was ok at times last night but having a terrible year.

Varcoe, love him at his best but looks cooked, Josh Daicos has attributes but may not make it, certainly doesn't look ready yet.

IQ showed he should go on to be a very good player, like the look of him.

I commend WHE for putting in as a backman when we need someone down there, wasn't great but tried hard, the fact he didn't manage to lay a single tackle all night is a little damning but he was far from our worst.

Chol only had 7 disposals to Grundy's 9 and only 6 hitouts to 36 but, I thought he did a couple of really athletic things last night, including kicking a goal that touched our boy up a bit.

Adams was a massive out. Our midfield has struggled all year, they took it out of the center twice as many times as we did last night even with our ruckman dominating the hitouts. When they rebounded out of defense they moved it far too quickly and freely though the middle of the ground, putting our already badly undermanned backline under enormous pressure.

In the forward line, it all looks a bit DeGoey or bust at the moment and when he is up the ground at the stoppage we constantly tap or get it out to him there as well. Relying on him too much at the moment and he isn't getting enough help.

Sidey and Pendles turned the ball over last night more times and I have seen them do in an entire season in seasons past!!!!

Just missing too many best 22 players through injury and the players called upon are just not up to it.

Those that wallow in misery are all and about today

Sad little ferkers
There are the 'wallow in misery' ferkers and also the 'ignore the bleeding obvious and defend the indefensible' ferkers. Then there are those who just want to analyse the game and see what, if anything, can be salvaged from this absolute thumping of a loss.

Oh and for the love of god can someone down at the club teach Grundy how to kick at goal. His whole goal kicking action is deplorable.
Bent knee, bent foot, high ball drop, not kicking though it and unsteady approach no wonder he cant buy a goal when inside 35m even with a fistfull of 100s.

He's missed some absolute sodas this year after winning frees inside 50...what's worse is the scrub Voldo got a similar one and never looked like missing.

Team is broken. Not enough depth. And players don't give a crap. You can see in the West Coast game when they gave a crap - Champions. The past 2 weeks, where is that hunger? It's gone.

Even with all Richmond's outs earlier in the season... and literally half their team was out, they were still winning games and being competitive. Keeping themselves in a position for when these players return to steam into finals, which is what they are doing.

We should have won that GWS game last week. Kelly, Coniglio, Ward, De Boer out. These are 4 key mids for them. For them to destroy us like they did.. just shows how broken this team is. They had Taranto, plus guys like Williams and Greene who don't even play midfield in there just hammering us, and Whitfield just running around unchecked. We should have been all over them with guys not accustomed to those positions.

Then last night... was just as sad. No heart, no backbone. This season is done.

On a side note... I wonder how Beams actually feels about what is going on there. He said he loves Collingwood, wanted to go back there, give his heart, etc. Then he takes off after a few months with mental illness. Now I'm not going to criticize him, as these matters are serious and I don't know exactly what he is going through. But surely being away from the club and watching it burn like this couldn't make him feel any better? As a person who has suffered chronic depression throughout my life, I know that one of the key factors of it is guilt and feeling like you have let people down. IMO stepping away like this may not actually be good for him at all. He may actually be sitting there, blaming himself, and going further into the hole.

Then the Stevo incident. Did that cause friction? Maybe some players think Howe snitched on a teammate and are pi**ed off at him? Maybe others are pi**ed off at Stevo. Then Sam Murray sitting there on a doping thing as well.. How is that affecting the group seeing a mate go through that kind of stress of potentially never playing again?

We don't know how all these incidents are affecting the rest of the team. Players feeling let down? Angry? Worried? Anxious? Seems like they just don't want to be there.. Throw the injuries on top and All this crap has piled up to a massive dung pile, with the players who are out there now sitting on top of that dung pile wondering why they ever bother trying.
Beams has needed to take some time away for personal issues and it will help him. He loves footy and will relish playing again when he’s back. He’s a competitor.
Regarding the rest of your post, all I ever see is a tight group. They will be aware of Stevo, form, confidence, injuries etc but I don’t believe it would be affecting them. They will stick at it until our luck turns.

Your next question is a little challenging to answer, as I'm not sure if you're asking for equivalent players in age or experience. I mean the Tigers also came in with 4 or 5 players with around 20 games experience (Chol, Soldo, Stack, Bolton)?
Still disagree even with your chosen four.
Games this year.
Chol (6), Soldo (8), Stack (16), Bolton (12) compare to our bottom four Crocker (3), Daicos (3), IQ (4) and Varcoe (12), none of which would get a regular game if we had other options. Form and continuity is the key.

I've had a busy morning. I've had to post on 200 "post loss - the world is coming to an end" threads. Suffice to say, I'm using a lot of cut and pasting. I generally state the obvious.... bucks is past his use-by date..... cox experiment is over.... what have i done to deserve this?.... the usual stuff.

p.s. Mick Malthouse on sportstalk in WA has just said that he's willing to fly over and take over the reins to make sure we win next week.

Wow Cox has been bad! If we actually had someone to replace him he would be out of the side for sure. So out of form in every aspect at the moment it's crazy.

I tell you what though one thing which really put a smile on my face was when the tigers fans were chanting USA USA, it's a clear indicator that they are still hurt from the prelim so overall a poor night but that part was good :p

Of course we are all still hurt from the Prelim last year. Wouldn't be a proper fan if we weren't. Can you tell me you're not still hurt after last year's Grannie or are you over it by now??
However we learnt from our mistakes last year as Benny Gale has already said that we went too hard too early last year and faded at the end (our 2nd half of the season was pretty ordinary). It seems that Collingwood has a similar problem this year as a few of your guys look gassed already.

Actually it isn’t delusional.
Optimistic perhaps.

We lost the qualifying final last year & had to play every week in the finals.
We will need to do the same but from 5-8 positions instead this year. It would just mean we play an elimination final & not a qualifying final. Win that & we are in the same position as last year. Playing a cut throat semi final in week 2.
We may get Moore, Greenwood, Adams, Stephenson & Sier back for the finals.
The other end of the spectrum is that we wont have Beams, Langdon, Wells, Reid or Dunn available. Probably wont have Aish either. We are also a near certainty with our track record to have another 3 or 4 soft tissue injuries at least before then. We are more than likely just going to be an also ran in 2019. I’ve accepted that & anything we do achieve is a bonus in my book.

First thing we must do post season is get to the bottom of the constant soft tissue injuries & find a solution.
If that means trading or delisting some less durable guys then so be it. We must look at the surface we train on.
We must look at how we train & we must look at how we rehab the players from soft tissue injuries. Because we are failing badly here.
How much does it cost to completely resurface a training ground? I imagine very affordable at this level of sport and maybe cheaper than relocating. Get it thoroughly tested, get it done! In fact make it extra soft within reason!
